M1 MacBook Pro in Adobe Lightroom Classic vs. Intel 10th Gen i5 MacBook Pro: Great performance!

The 10th Gen i5 MacBook Pro was purchased back in August and I couldn't wait to find out how the new M1 chip performed. Let me know about your experiences using Lightroom Classic translated through Rosetta 2 - and your predictions for its performance in 2021, which is when Adobe plans to release a native ARM version.

One last thing not mentioned in the review: During operations, heat generated by the Intel-based MBP was far higher than on the M1-bsaed MBP. Temps on the MBP were above 100 degrees C and fans were running full blast on the export. Fans ran on low on the M1 MBP, however it was almost cool to the touch.

Can you do a follow up video comparing all the tests with the newly release Lightroom developed to run natively on ARM?
@EmergentTechnology

I'd be happy to, but I'll need to borrow/obtain an Intel-based MBP to try it on. I am so sold on the M1 that I sold my i5-based MBP. The other comparison I want to make is between the M1 MBP and a fast desktop-class i7. I run the i7 9700F in my desktop and I'm pretty sure the M1 is just as fast in Lightroom.
@aftasarden2

@@EmergentTechnology Maybe you can test the M1 with the updated Lightroom in the exact same way you tested on this video, and just throw the results from the Intel-based on the screen for the comparison. It would work for me, at least 🙃

@@EmergentTechnology I’d be up for watching this. I have an i7 6700 desktop, as well as an iPad Pro with the a12x. The most ‘intensive; thing I would be doing is HDR bracketing, so I’m still trying to toss up between waiting for the new macs, or just continue doing it on my iPad.

Nice. You’ll enjoy it! For my latest video, I took 15GB of 4K video, imported it to the MacBook Pro, edited a minute-long video, exported it twice at 150mbps bitrate, uploaded it to RU-vid, and did a bunch of social media posts. My battery went from 100% to 82% in this process over almost 2 hours. And the thing barely got warm. Absolutely mindblowingly good.

I ordered a 16gb m1 mbp recently as well. Long delivery date though. I had to replace my NEW mbp 16gb/512gb with the 10th gen i5 processor. That one ran like shit right out of the box. Hopefully the new one is better

@@EmergentTechnology thanks for the reply. And yeah, I was really confused with that i5 mbp. Literally 15 minutes after setting it up with my iCloud and stuff, I encountered HORRIBLE stuttering and lag. I had to force reset it probably 4-5 times in just 2 days of use. Thankfully I was able to get a full refund and spent it back on that M1! However I gotta wait a month or so. Good vid btw

Could you try stitching a panorama of say 8-10 images from your Canon? Is there much difference there? Also could you do a video showing the speed of general use such as swapping between photos in the develop module and zooming in, out, applying adjustment brushes etc? My 2017 i5 PC with 32GB RAM struggles with the 100mb uncompressed raw files from my Sony A7R4. I’m considering whether one of these M1 MacBooks would be powerful enough or if I should wait and spend more on a more powerful one when they presumably come out next year. What file sizes are the raw photos in this video? Thanks!
@KiwiandPixel
@KiwiandPixel 3 года назад
As per the video the R6 RAW files are in the low 20-ish megabyte range. I sold the i5-based MacBook Pro so I can't do any more side-by-side comparisons of the two machines. I will be doing more compared to an i7-9700 setup sometime soon.
@jackmarris7576
@jackmarris7576 3 года назад
@@KiwiandPixel thanks I missed the file size note in the video. Looking forward to future videos (subbed). Clearly the difference between 20 and 100mb per picture is a lot but I just wonder how usable it will be. Time to look up Apple’s return policy I guess..

How long your Macbook Pro 13 (Intel based) battery last when editing with Lightroom Classic? I found mine last only about 2 hours. It such a weird thing, since it battery works normal with other application (safari, chrome) but when using Lightroom Classic I found that it heat so much and thus make the battery suffer.
@EmergentTechnology
@EmergentTechnology 3 года назад
Correct, mine lasted only about 90-120 minutes on Intel while editing in LR. It's probably 5+ hours on the new M1 MBP.

Using a laptop while it charges is never an issue. You just need to make sure you “exercise” the battery every few weeks with a good charge/discharge cycle.

Thank you for this informative video! I am an architect student and I would like to know if you recommend to buy a M1 MBP 13” now, knowing that most of the app that we use as architects aren’t probably optimized or adapted yet for the M1 processors. Do you think that most of the app like Photoshop, sketchup... will be optimized for the M1 processors within the foreseeable future? Will it be a formality in your opinion? Or do you think that it’s risky to buy an M1 MBP now, because apple might force us to use apple apps on theses MBP. Thanks for your feedback.
@EmergentTechnology
@EmergentTechnology 3 года назад
Thanks for commenting. First, I didn't know Macs were an option at all for architects, as I assumed most CAD programs were largely limited to PCs. Photoshop, for example, is mostly converted to ARM architecture now. Adobe just released an update about this yesterday: thenextweb.com/plugged/2021/03/11/adobe-officially-releases-photoshop-for-apple-m1-says-its-50-faster/ Whether or not it is a risky buy has to do with what you're doing with the computer. So far, my experience has been close to flawless. This is largely thanks to Apple's use of Rosetta 2, which translates non-native apps into workable versions for the ARM architecture. The performance hit is negated by the fact that the M1 processor is so fast, so I haven't had any issues.

I dont think the comparison is fair, The Macbook Pro with the Intel chip has 4 cores the Macbook Pro with the M1 chip has 8 cores. Still, the Intel chip was a few seconds behind the M1. To me the Intel chip is the winner, although it has half the power of the M1, it was only a few seconds behind.

@KiwiandPixel
@KiwiandPixel 3 года назад
It's a complicated answer, since the new M1 architecture doesn't have a lot of MacOS games coded for it as of yet. The Intel MacBook Pros with dedicated graphics, running Windows, still provide the optimal gaming experience *for a Mac.* If gaming is your first priority, a PC laptop with dedicated graphics will be better geared for it.

to me as a photo editor this kind of test makes no sense at all. Export / Import times do not really matter on performance. Instead, applying loaded presets, with noise reduction, range masks etc., culling, switching trough images makes big differences. Lightroom on my M1 testbsystem took about 5 s to switch an image. 2s for appying an preset etc. The M1 was unusabe with lightroom. It would be very nice if you could extend your test for more practical way of app usage
