I upgraded from the Pro 2020 and honestly I feel no difference 😅😅😅 Yeah the screen is great WHEN you watch something with HDR in RU-vid… which is never in my case… that’s it. A12Z was already fast and snappy at everything I did, Netflix, RU-vid, Procreate, and normal stuff… I wish it was a bigger upgrade tbh
I am a student and been using the m1 Air ever since it came out and i absolutely love it. Its perfect for my needsof srudy, watching online content and social media.
I upgraded from an M1 iPad Pro with 256 gigs of storage. I currently have M4 iPad Pro with one terabyte of storage and 16 GB of ram. I am a composer and I use notation programs like Staff pad and Dorico. With a full orchestral score, I had lags, timing issues, a general muddiness in the audio. It was obviously stressing the ram and the processing power. With the M4 iPad Pro, those issues are completely gone. Timing is precise, there is extreme clarity in the audio, and even the connection with my Bluetooth keyboard has much less latency. And we’re talking about software that is currently available now that does stress the current hardware of the iPad. Not everybody is a video editor gamer or 3-D modeler. It has made a big difference in my use case. And by the way, sample libraries, such as the ones in Staff pad take up a great deal of storage space and require a lot of ram as well . Thank you.
Do you think if your M1 had 16 GB of Ram you would have had those problems? I'm debating on whether to pick up a refurbished M1 1TB with 16 GB Ram for a lot cheaper than the M4 with 16 Gb Ram. Any advice?
@@Pesto-64I would say it’s the RAM. On my M1 Mac I have issues because I have 8GB of ram, and just compare how powerful the m1 already is compared with x86 processors. I have the m1 iPad too, but the 8GB and 256
@@Pesto-64If it’s significantly cheaper, go for the m1. If you’re saving more than $300 by going for the m1, it’s worth it. If you plan on getting the iPad for gaming, the money you save for going for m1 can probably get you an Xbox or something. The difference between mini led and oled isn’t as crazy as people say it is
I went from an iPad Pro 12.9" 4th gen to an iPad Pro M4. I love the weight difference. My biggest issue with my 4th gen was the battery life. I use it everyday for taking notes at work and that battery was just not able to keep up.
Well yeah for the average user an M4 over M1 is wasting money but for videographers that edit on iPad and other people that need the better performance the price difference can be worth it
Right now I have the M4 iPad Pro 11. I hoping I will stay with it. I tend to try the iPad and then move back to the Mac. I am trying to look at it as not a replacement of my Mac, but as an in-between device from iPhone to Mac. Let see how long that lasts.
The weight alone is worth the upgrade from the M1 Pro. Mine is the 13inch and its heavy and bulky, not ideal for my RU-vid and web search consumption as i carry it and toss it around the house very often. OLED is a plus since i notice the halo effect with the Mini LED 13inch. Not to mention the how thin it is for a 13 INCH IPAD. Justifiable to upgrade!
Considering this keyboard ridiculous price, Apple storage and memory prices, I’m not looking forward to replace my M1. Also, iPad OS is what I want to see getting better. Stage manager is still very bad, unless using a second monitor, but still you can’t even have two audio sources at the same time. This OS needs a lot of attention.
What’s the point of buying new iPad Pro for « future proof » if you’ll want the next best iPad ever in 2 or 3 years? The M1 iPad Pro is already future proof and I’m still perfectly happy with my 11 inch one even if the screen is still a LCD. I think the upgrade don’t worth the money especially for performance gap.
I have the m1 now, and been facing the same dilemma. You raised some great points, trading in my current iPad, and it’s about a $800 difference, it very well may be worth the money to upgrade to M4. Especially since I plan on keeping this device for a long time. Still deciding. Great video, as always. Very helpful.
Thank you for these helpful comparisons between M1 and M4 iPad Pro. I have had the M1 12.9 iPad Pro for over two years, and I am seriously ready to upgrade to the M4 11 inch iPad Pro.
As an M1 User, I get amazing speeds still with what I use it for. I use it for video editing on the go like LumaFusion. The M4 still doesn’t seem like a decent reason to upgrade. The device is missing one less microphone and even though it’s thinner, I fear that it’s easier to bend, after reviewing some videos on RU-vid showing it’s already bent slightly out of the box. That why would somebody pay another thousand dollars plus a new Apple Pencil that’s also a pro model which cost probably way more than the OG Apple Pencil second GEN, it’s not worth it, there’s nothing innovative with this new device, there’s a better wide lens on the 12 9 inch generation five then the new M4 it makes no sense..
I completely agree. I don't understand why people can just keep quickly upgrading when there is not much reason to. I feel like apple needs to slow down a bit. Then making the m2 was a ridiculous move as the m1 has no real difference. They have enough money to chill and really think about what they're going to release next. I wish people would think more before they just purchase because it's new and out. It'd just an endless loop of buying the next big thing and people eat it up.
I have the 12.9 M1 1tb, that’s the 16gb of RAM version. For my usage it’s more than enough. If Apple doesn’t gonna mess up the performance with updates then this tablet will be good for 4-5 years more. No point to upgrade, save your money.
@@RobertGaron exactly, i said for my usage. Browsing, youtube, editing documents, mails, etc. Basically light stuff but i tried multitasking with stage manager on 4k monitor and it’s still doing great. Keep in mind that M1 it’s a laptop processor, 16 GB of RAM it’s more than 8 GB base Macbook Air and iPadOS it’s light compared to full fledge MacOS. Unless you want to play the last high end graphics games in 2028, i don’t see why M1 iPad Pro will not be able to cover all basic tablet needs for 95% of the users. :)
@@liviurosca oh yes, I agree with that. In fact, I have an M1 iPad Pro. I love it and I have plenty of storage so this thing should run another couple of years before I upgrade, but the upgrade may come before that depending on what Apple does next year to the iPad Pro line. I like what they did this year except how thin they made it. I wish they kept it the same thickness with a larger battery and have the battery just be a beast. That alone would get many people to upgrade because they wouldn’t have to be attached to a cord.
@@RobertGaron the reduced thickness make sense only if you use the tablet with the magic keyboard, better balance and overall smaller thickness. However i’m still prefer a classic laptop. Not a fan of “one device does all” thing.
@@liviurosca Yes agreed. I use my iPad mostly for media or Bible Study and a little for a productivity tool, but not my main one. My main one is my MacBook Pro for productivity.
@@BrandonButch I am enticed by it. Like I wished it worked with M1. But for what I can already do with my current setup, this is more of a "quality of life" upgrade.
i guess u can use your M1 air for 2 more years and then upgrade to M6 Pro ipad.. my M1 Pro is still very fast. Not in the creative industry, so i am just using my ipad for browser, notes taking, simple office apps and netflix. so it all depends on your usecase
From the M1 iPad Pro to the M4 iPad Pro, there are several significant developments: 1. Size and Design: While the design is similar, the M4 iPad Pro has a slightly larger 13-inch display with smaller bezels. 2. Thickness: The M4 iPad Pro is much thinner with a thickness of 5.1mm, compared to the M1 which has a thickness of 6.4mm. 3. Weight: The M4 iPad Pro is lighter with a weight of 579 grams, while the M1 weighs 682 grams. 4. Display: The M4 iPad Pro introduces OLED screen technology for the first time for an Apple product, offering better contrast and sharper colors compared to the Mini LED screen on the M1. 5. Display Options: The M4 iPad Pro also includes an option for a nano-texture display, reducing reflections and smudging. 6. Keyboard: The Magic Keyboard also received an update, now made of aluminum with additional features like a function row. 7. Performance: The M4 chip offers improved performance, especially in terms of hardware-accelerated ray tracing for gaming and 3D modeling. 8. Camera: There are improvements to the camera, including adaptive true tone flash for document scanning and a landscape-oriented front-facing camera. 9. Battery Endurance: Despite having a smaller battery, the M4 iPad Pro offers better battery life thanks to a more efficient chipset. 10. Camera and Audio Features: The M4 iPad Pro offers enhancements to image processing and studio-quality microphones. 11. Future Potential: The possibility of future exclusive features for the M4, including software optimized for the latest generation chip. 12. Upgrade Recommendation: Brandon recommends upgrading to the M4 iPad Pro, especially to benefit from various enhancements including display, performance, and longer lifespan. 13. Value: Despite significant price differences, Brandon believes that the added value offered by the M4 iPad Pro justifies the additional cost. 14. Comparison with iPad Air and Previous Models: While there are other options such as the iPad Air 5 or iPad Air M2, Brandon suggests considering the M4 iPad Pro due to its significant value additions. 15. User Decision: Brandon has decided to sell their M1 iPad Pro and stick with the M4 iPad Pro after just a week of use, compared to the M2 which lasted about 3 months before reverting to the M1.
I made the upgrade from the M1 to the M4 and very glad i did, no more blooming on HDR content, the thinness makes it more enjoyable to use without the Magic Keyboard and the Magic Keyboard itself was a very nice upgrade. I doubt ill be upgrading again even 3 years from now
I upgraded from the 2021 M1 Pro to the m4 pro, and very happy with all the upgrades, shame on Apple to not allow previous pencils and keyboards to work on the new iPads, I feel Apple is very greedy and take advantage of their customer loyalty.
I just bought a 13" M1 iPad Pro 2TB cellular for $919, a pencil for $50, and a new Magic Keyboard for $147 - and I've never felt more validated. Very happy with my purchase, it's totally fine for my needs.
Yeah, I got the new M4 13” iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard for about $1800 after tax… a few days later, I just picked up a used M1 12.9” iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil for $660. I use it to take notes for school and for anatomy apps and so I 1000% don’t need anything fancy, and the older iPad Pro is perfect.
I have the iPad pro M1. Since the M4 model appeared, I always wondered if these minor details, size, thickness etc. were same, and every other review talked mainly about the function, where I was wondering if the Logitech keyboard, the Buddy case, the magnetic stand I got would fit the M4! It's these minor details which decide for me if I want to upgrade, as well as the functionality, as I'm not a constant user of my iPad. Im more concerned about the connectivity with speeds and using an external display to make things look bigger when at home! Thanks for getting TO THE POINTs mentioned!

Interesting. I use my M1 iPad Pro for working on the go, I use Lightroom and Final Cut a lot and still rendering really fast! But after seeing this I think I’ll keep my currently iPad a little bit more instead of replacing it. I don’t think is a really good idea pay $800 extra to get almost the same.
The cost of the switch is more than what you're saying once you factor in the new magic keyboard, pencil pro, cases, etc. as the M4 isn't backward compatible. I had a A12Z 11in iPad Pro and after seeing the M4, I went out and bought a discounted M2. A pretty significant boost in performance (Used partially for a golf sim) and I could reuse all of my accessories.
Is it tangible to hold the 13" with one hand while walking/standing and handwriting with the other? Either in portrait or landscape. @PrestoMoto02, @Shirokuro73, @BrandonButch
At the end he mentioned that instead of getting an iPad Pro you should get the M2 IPad Air if you’re on a budget and I have a bit of an issue with that. The M2 IPad Air 11in starts at $799 and the 13in at $949. They have the absolute beast of a chip in them, but due to the rest of the design of the iPad Air it’s almost like if you put an insane powerful engine in a standard car. Cool, but it’s not likely to ever be able to display its full potential. A refurbished M2 IPad Pro will run you about the same prices respectively, but you gain the pro-motion display, the LiDAR Scanner in the back camera, a 10-core GPU as opposed to the 9-core GPU in the M2 air, Face ID, and the drastically better sound quality of the speakers. I also don’t think future proofing would be any different than the M2 air because they run on the same chip. In my opinion you’re better off buying a refurbished M2 pro than an M2 air.
I upgraded from an 11 M1 to a 13 M4! Couldn’t be happier with the screen and the pencil improvements. The function keys on the keyboard is my favorite though
One thing not mentioned here is you can only get the nano texture glass with 1TB of storage or more. Which makes it significantly more expensive than the base model.
Or just don't get the nano textured glass. How about that? Your acting like the nano texture and 1TB are a requirement when that simply is not true at all.
3:05 It’s not pitch black because you opted for nano texture which is never going to provide you with any benefits outside of working with it outside in direct sunlight. Otherwise it’s always going to be a take away. I use my iPad mainly for Office usage and entertainment. M1 does that with flying colours.
Thanks Brandon, great video. I upgraded from M1 11 inch iPad Pro to M4 iPad Pro and bought the new keyboard and apple pencil pro. A quick observation, the ESC button doesn’t do anything when I press it
Nice! How are you feeling about the upgrade? And the ESC key will prob take a while to become useful, as devs need to code that in to their apps (since the previous MK didn’t have an esc key)
I use the escape key to cancel out of submenus/pop up panels; iPad OS is pretty good about recognizing that. Also on the prior Magic Keyboard without function keys I reassigned Escape to the Caps Lock key. Works like a charm.
I upgraded my 2018 1st gen 11-inch Pro to the M4 and i have no regrets :) i have the M1 12.9-inch Pro and will be sticking with this for a while maybe until the M5 (?) model. I still think my M1 is going to hold up for a few more years despite getting it in 2021.
If you're an artist or in the creative industry, upgrade. Otherwise the M1 Pro is still a luxury compared to the rest of Apples iPad lineup. Hence why I bought it over an m4, and air. Save yourself $500+
I had the M1 with 8 GB of ram and 256 GB of storage. The ram was part of the problem, but mostly in terms of when I had a large orchestral piece with a lot of samples in it. I use Staff pad and Dorico. But I think the faster processor in the M4 was notably effective in the performance of the music. The timing issues that I had before we’re gone. The processor was quick enough and powerful enough to render the composition with very clear audio in all the parts. The Bluetooth connection with my keyboard was with a much lower latency. In summary. I think the ram helped in terms of the amount of instruments that could be loaded, and in future proofing the device, but even though it’s more expensive, the M4 processor is a lot faster. I was very hesitant about making the purchase, but I think it was definitely worth it. I hope this helps.😊
I had to return the M4 ipad. The speakers were horrible. Sounded like it was in a tunnel. Not sure if that is all of them but I an sticking with my old one since it sounds so much better.
This video showed all the ways it’s NOT the same lol. Better display, better performance/battery life, better speakers/mic, better accessories, lighter, thinner, etc. far from the same
@@BrandonButch they have the same battery life stated by apple, better performance sure but there are no current apps that can take advantage of it, speakers and mike are not that much noticeable of a difference
@@BrandonButch your saying a new ipad has a better battery than a iPad that is 3 years old, if both were knew there would be no difference, even longterm not much of a point even if it lasts 9-8 hours. We just got to wait for the wwdc I guess
@@BrandonButchtbh, I tried the new version and speakers are just better and louder on the M1 iPad Pro. Also the recording quality, from what I tested seemed to be somehow better on the M1, the camera is indeed placed better in landscape orientation but aside from that I couldn't see any noticeable quality improvement over the M1 model. Oled is good but not worth spending all that amount of money to switch from IPS. Performance is indeed better but the point is, how are you even going to need all that power with iPadOS? Let's be honest, even the M1 on iPads is pretty wasted, there are barely few apps who fully take advantage of it, specifically a very restricted bunch of games and video editing apps, iPadOS as long as it introduced some important desktop features is still way too far from a real laptop experience, it runs the same iOS apps, no command shell, no brew, no package managers, no desktop software compatibility, only the app store, even when I try to use it plugged to a hub I still feel restrictions and uncomfortable stuff compared to a full professional desktop experience. If a M1 is still an overpowered SoC for that type of the device, how is the M4 gonna improve the experience aside from showing off and flexing the spec sheet? Honestly, people who already have a M1 should just keep it and stay happy with it since it's still top tier in terms of benchmarks, upgrading to this model for a OLED screen and a landscape camera is just not worth it unless you have money to throw.
I upgrade my M1 11” 256gb to the M4 11” 512gb. I agree with all your conclusion. For video editing and rendering with LumaFusion the M4 is smoother and faster. The reason why I picked the 512gb version is that the M4 256gb 11”has significantly slower r/w speed than my previous M1 256gb. I did test it it is over 40% slower and we all know why!
For me the main reason for the an older M-chip iPad Pro is the older magic keyboard... I can't get why Apple made the geometry this much worse... for me it makes no sense... it makes it like a laptop instead of an even more mobile iPad... even the weight distribution that comes with it when used in any other way other than on a desk (and for that we already have better tools like the Macs... so the older for me
I'm one of your new subscribers, and I have to say how I enjoyed your comparison of the two iPads! I received mine yesterday, and something isn't working, but I'm going to Apple today to get it switched out. I have always taken out Apple Care for an apparent reason.
Thanks for this comparison between the M1 and M4 iPad Pros. Lets say that practical daily usage wise the M1 works perfectly but if you want a very refined version of the M1 then go for M4. Better screen quality, better speakers, better microphone, selfie camera finally put horizontaly, better magic keyboard, slightly better Apple pencil, better battery life and finally being lighter? Worth upgrading for someone with extra cash but for somebody getting into the tablet world worth getting the M4 for its qualities and future proofing. Thank you. Liked and subscribed 👍🏻
Thanks for the review. I would say if you can wait 2-3 weeks wait. Only if WWDC shows an M4 iPadOS only feature would it be worth it, otherwise stick with M1 and upgrade your laptop to M4. Much better value with a laptop using M4 vs an iPad IMO since almost no performance difference with ipad M1 and M4 can be found (saves you less than 1-2 minutes in day). Sure M4 is better but that 800 dollars price difference can get you a MacBook Air M4 which should make better use of the M4 chip and MacOS. So value = M4 MBA vs M4 iPad Pro. If you have the money then spend it how ever you want too.
Great video, Brandon. I have the 11inch M1 pro and I think I will be sticking with it. It still runs like it is brand new and is more than what I need.
Really curious to find out how the nano textured screen is on the M4 iPad Pro looks. Used to always get the anti-glare screen on my MacBooks that I purchased in the past. Loved the way they looked!
Wait until you get burn in on the OLED Ipad. I went through this with LG OLED TVs and that beautiful picture isn't worth the three year life you'll get with burn in. I may be wrong, and I hope I am but LG went to some very exotic pixel shifting to help with burn in but it's not perfect.
Chase Sapphire card holders have a 50% bonus on points spent at Apple this month. Between the trade in value on my 11” and cc points I think I’ll move on the M1. Just to stave off depreciation, if nothing else. Great video
Great video , if you use the keyboard and pencil it’s more than a $800 upgrade. Looking at $1300 or so, it’s a nice machine I don’t fault anyone for keeping M1 or upgrading to M4.
M4 was the only reason I got an iPad - after 7 years of waiting since the iPhone X, and 3 years of waiting since the 2021 MacBook Pro - they finally added a true HDR display on the iPad at a reasonable size - the M1 and M2 pro only had it at 13 inches which is too big for a tablet. OLED on an iPad is the biggest thing for me… because the tablet is so restricted in software that even a 2018 iPad Pro works just fine today - but the OLED display and true HDR allows me to finally watch movies on my bed and while travelling like never before - oh and it’s true blacks. After owning an OLED TV since 2018 and slowly moving to all OLED/FALD devices at home - iPads non local dimming LCD displays were an eyesore
no sense in upgrading yet since m4 is 5 years future why not applying same idea to 2021 ipad pro which should last two more years then it will make sens to trade it in.
Brandon, trying to decide it it is worth it to get the 1 TB model with the 16 gb. Is there any benefit to upgrade to 16 gb ram now or is it future proofing? I would not use 1 TB storage but 16 gb ram is tempting if it truly is useful.
No idea what you are doing with your displays and the black test …. The blacks on my M1 Pro are proper black. Do you understand how the m1 display works ?
Hopefully there's a huge glut of these old iPad Pro M1s that people are willing to give away for a song. I just may be looking for one, if the price is right. :)
There is a shortcut battery stats. Easily pull your iPad battery statistics. I am guessing the difference in battery isn’t due to M4, it’s probably your M4 battery has 25% more capacity
The M1 is more than capable of the software that can run on it, plus you just use it with an external display when needed. I'm sure the M4 is great but if you have the M1 there's no real need to upgrade, IMO.
I have the IPad Pro m4 11 inch I upgraded from the 10th generation IPad.. it’s great so far but my previous iPad Pro 4 years ago was really good.. I literally just upgraded so I don’t see much difference but a nice slim tablet
0:57 If I m not wrong,Brandon’s comparing wifi version 13” M4(579g)vs.12.9” M1(682g). It shows >15% less in weight. 👍🏼 If for 11” WiFi version M4(444g) vs. M1(466g) there’s only
It’s a struggle to figure out if I should get rid of my M1 11 to the M4 13. As a digital artist extra space and better screen are big factors for me but damn is it ever expensive. 😭
I was pissed off when my M1 quit working and was forced into the M4 iPad Pro. It is a nice upgrade, but I wish I didn't have to buy it because it's $1,500. I'll probably sell my M1 off for parts to help with the cost.
I just watched this video and had to laugh at the audio test, because I’m watching and listening to this video on my M1 Pro lol. Also I want to add most people sell the old one on marketplace and will get another 200-300$ over trade in depending on model. Also I have a very hard time justifying the cost for this kind of upgrade over a iPad Pro that’s still amazing in its own right.
