Brief test of my newly acquired Slidewinder DX coil in the yard. I'm using the MFJ-1979 17 ft whip as suggested by M1ECC, although I do not have the ground rod buried deep enough for a good test, it was quite satisfying to see how well it worked as it sat.
In the video I mention MFJ-1936w, but it is the MFJ-1936t kit that I have. Don't forget to Like and Subscribe to catch the upcoming reviews on the Slidewinder DX Coil and 6 ft whip I'll be using on my mobile. Mobile HF is my primary use for this coil and I'm excited to get that going.
Like it or not, give me your feedback and let me know what you think.

Just ordered the slidewinder package, with coil, ground spike, radial kit, and the telescoping whip. Also order the MFJ 12’ whip. Hopefully in a couple weeks I can show it off to our qrp group that meets on Saturday.

Thank you. I'm hoping to make some more in the next week or so. I've finally got a little more free time.

Use a line isolator at the base of the antenna to stop common mode current coming back down your coax otherwise the coax will act as part of the antenna and screw up your swr even if you think it looks acceptable.

Those Slidewinder coils look the business, but with the MFJ whip you only really need the coil for 30, 40 and 60m. The MFJ 1979 will do 6m-20m on it's own so to speak. I may get one, but use a silver rod with the coil removed for 6m-20m and just adjust the radiator length for each band. I marked up with different coloured sharpie pens for the different bands, so quite easy to get on each band quickly enough. I am working on a trap and wire to give me 40m when the silver rod is set for 20m, attached via a hose clip at the tip of the silver rod. As you know use as little of the coil as possible with the MFJ 1979 and use the radiating antenna as long as possible. A good set of ground radials will help with SWR and will send your signal to the skyline better. Hope you keep well, 73's Andy M6APJ.

When I slow down a little I'll post another video using this with my 5 radials. It's been busy and wet lately. Traveling around for Field Day today.

I got sidetracked this morning and turned comments off. I hope this is a little inspiring to someone out there. I love amateur radio and I love helping others. I'm just here to share my fun with you and I want to know what you think, too.

I stopped watching at "flat swr across the entire 40M band". How is that possible with a high Q tuned base loaded whip antenna?

I'm not savvy on the how it works part of antennas. I love them and I'm still trying to learn, but I don't know. I know this worked just like that, though. The ground radial makes a difference. I've never set this antenna up with more than one radial. This coil is very well designed and, in my opinion, more than worth it.

It likely varied a tad from bottom to top, but not by much.

Because I have designed it to be not so high Q & very efficient. It is certainly a not dummyload.

Hello excellent video just a question I would like to buy the whip MFJ 1979 but in EHAM the reviews are not good as is your experience with that whip Thanks Eddy KN4QFD

I haven't looked at eHam reviews for it but it works well for my application. Ground makes a large difference. I still have a couple of other videos I need to get done on this setup. Weather and travel have set me back a little lately. With the M1ECC Slidewinder DX coil, MFJ-1979 whip, and the ground rod kit, I get a 1.6:1 or better 40-10. I've got 4 additional ground radials ready to setup for my next test and I feel certain that will only make it better. The 1979 won't work for everyone, but neither will any other antenna. Your individual setup can't compare 1:1 to anyone else because there a too many variables. The ground where I am is not the best plus I have multiple transformers nearby that affect it some. That's part of why I wanted to do some basic videos. I don't have a fancy setup and I'm not reviewing for any retailer or company. Just trying to show my own experience with this equipment for a real world type comparison

Take a look at the Chameleon stainless steel whips. They may have to be backordered, but the difference in quality is notable.

My MFJ 1979 broke the 3rd time I used it.

I don't use this setup for every outing so it doesn't get used a ton. As a matter of fact, i use mobile hf on 20m more than anything just because of my current setup. This whip stays in my car all of the time and i haven't trouble with it. I can imagine that with a lot of regular use extending and collapsing, it may wear quicker. This coil, though, is fantastic. One of the first things i took note of was how smooth the adjustment is. You don't have fins to break after using for a while. A lot of the adjustable coils have fins that you'll hear clicking with every move and those will wear out and become a bit useless. The slide here is just a piece of stainless steel that slides up and down the coil. I put this one on my car for a while and my wife forgot about it. She wound up breaking the coil at the grocery store parking lot one evening, so now i have a white one that i replaced this with.
