Most of the m2 carbines were actually m1 carbines with auto conversions, so many of the legal carbines in the US have m2 parts, inside, with only the selector switch and a couple parts missing. By looking through all the Second hand m1 parts kits, online, u can find all the missing parts u need. My personal carbine was brought back, after the war, with an m2 stock, with space for the selector.
Ingenious how they modify the weapon by mostly just reworking existing parts. My M1 carbine was crushed to death during the gun buy-back in Australia in 1997. I miss it almost every day, fantastically simple and fun to use.
@@cassidy109 It was a registered firearm. They would have tracked me down like a dog. Actually it was registered in South Australia and I turned it over in New South Wales, and years later the SA government tracked me down demanding proof I'd disposed of the weapon.
These were made long before the days of computer generated schematic type videos. They were very effective in training soldiers who needed to see large detailed parts that could mimic the actual parts and functioning of their firearms. I am sure the Army still has these models somewhere in their vast network of depot storage areas, buried next to that box that contains the prize Indiana Jones was looking for! Lol!
@NewWaveTH thanks well i watched a vid that said they both fired a type of 30-6 , 30 ot 6, yea 06 well thanks for your input and its still a good weapon for cqb
I fired one of these... and its very accurate.. like using a .22 cal air gun... you dont need that stopping power if you can hit them in the head at 150 yards
They tried to use this as the basis for the SCAR mk.16 but they screwed it up by flipping the gas system upside down. I think an enlarged M2 carbine action would make a great assault rifle in 5.56 as long as they kept the M16 style charging handle and trigger group.
The M2 was probably one gun that could have benefited from a 3-shot burst-mode. It is also fascinating to learn that in closed-bolt autos, the process for automatic fire is actually more complex than semi-auto fire.
This gun is really sick. If they had adopted the 7mm British cartridge, this gun would basically be America's AK47. Stoner might have developed an entirely new assault rifle--but if they had kept the 7mm, the M16 would be far more effective than it is today.
12 years later and the armed forces started to dabble with the .277 fury. Back in the old days, I was an advocate of .30 calibers and I must say your post aged well.
That is... BRILLIANT! I don't know about "plenty of firepower" in the .30 carbine but it is much better than the 8mm Japanese type 100 smg. Heck, the 9mm is criticized for it's stopping power but the Japanese made it just a bit weaker. I've fired the M1 carbine but this thing looks like a lot more fun. :)
If .30 Carbine was just slightly more powerful with say 100-300 ft/s more speed at the muzzle, it could be considered an intermediate cartridge, and thus the M2 Carbine would be the first assault rifle of the US. As is, the M1 Carbine has been taken successfully to 250-300m. That's a stretch though, so the M2 Carbine doesn't have the accuracy of the AKM (Has been taken to 300-400m), but it's lighter and has more controllability.
Every time someone publishes a post about the M1 Carbine, here come the lonely who need attention desperately and start to yak yak yak some delirious comments comparing the Carbine to FALs, M16, M1 Garands, M14 and other totally unrelated small arms. Why to thye stop there, why not compare to a 105MM Howitzer it sure has more stopping power. M1 Carbine replacement/backup for HANDGUNS. HAND ...GUNS , capisce ?
Yea but it also would need stopping power ? Ive herd stories of people shooting an m1 and the bullets nocking people down but they get back up , the setting was winter in korea and enemy forces were heavy coats. Do you think the 5.56 is the best caliber to do the job ? or would the 30-6 be better ?
yes and it's cartridge is definitely powerful enough to qualify as an Assault rifle. the .30 carbine out of a M1 Carbine have 1,310J of kinetic energy. the New AK-12 firing the 5.45x39 has 1,390J of kinetic energy just 80 more and it qualifies as an assault rifle while .30 carbine is a shade behind so it definitely qualifies aswell. PDW's like the HoneyBadger and SCAR PDW are much weaker than the m2 carbine due to their short ~6inch long barrels compared to the M2 carbines 18inch and as a result of this both of them barely get over 1,000J of muzzle energy. .30 carbine is effective up to 300 yards aswell. in this video, he scores 15/25 hits at 300 yards and if you only include the last 2 since he admitted the first was his fault 11/15 for between 60-73% accuracy which definitely qualifies as effective. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2ozvYaxr6iQ.html
Yes it was. Not widely used, but mostly in the closing days against Japan. In the Korean War, it was the most widely used carbine, before the M16 rifle replaced it and other rifles in the Vietnam War.
