because its a force touch trackpad, its like the taptic engine solid state home button on the iphone 7, it tricks you into thinking the trackpad or home button is actually clicking, but its vibrating and not moving.

That was a WindowServer watchdog "panic" which basically means WindowServer had timed out for a certain period (looks like it hit it at 123 seconds), then automatically reboots (via panic) to recover. There are/were ways to disable that timeout so you could run crazy stuff like this, but I'm not sure how you'd do it nowadays 🤷‍♂️

Just got my m1 Max MBP, will report back if it survives... Edit 5: Final result: 9378 concurrent tabs. 5210 tabs were restored after Chrome crashed. All of the tabs work. The computer barely slowed down, and memory pressure stayed green. It maxed out at 59.78 GB ram used. It never got over 75 degrees C. edits: edit1: It has just made it to 6000!!! It is certainly slowing down… Temps are around 65C constanty… Edit2: It took 2:24 to go from 7,000 tabs to 8,000… It is certainly slowing down. Edit3: Chrome just crashed… The counter reported 8127 concurrent tabs. Trying again… Edit4: It’s now over 8000, and the counter is frozen. However, I still have 5GB of ram left and the system isn’t even struggling, but chrome is not responding.

macOS on Apple Silicon is actually pretty impressive in terms of keeping the overall UI responsive under extreme conditions. When I tried the famous shell fork bomb (the one with colons and stuff) on my M1 Pro, it remained responsive enough to reboot it from the UI. I was genuinely surprised!

I agree with declaring the M2 the winner, since it went neck to neck with the retina with just half of the RAM. Something tells me that a 16GB M2 could possibly open about 6k tabs. Also, when Chrome restore tabs, at least on Windows, it opens the tabs, but dont load the site itself into RAM until you click on a tab to bring it foreground, I dont know how it behaves on Mac, but based on the usable 2.4k tabs, I can guess it behaves the same

The fact that a laptop with very limited ventilation for cooling managed to open that much tabs without frying itself is already amazing. Google Chrome is famous. For being a devourer of RAM so that MacBook certainly went through hell with this challenge.

it really is showing, with tabs needing 400-800+ MB of ram _per_ tab, just how glutenous Chrome, as well as the web at large, has gotten. It quite appalling in some ways, that it uses such crazy amounts even for more basic sites.

I think you should open less tabs at a time, so it can at least sort of keep the newly opened tabs in RAM without moving them to swap until they fully load, and then move on to the next bunch of tabs.

the M2 won either way, the M2 with 8GB of ram could beat a 16GB ram retina MacBook Pro, however I believe this test should have been done with a 16GB M2 MacBook Air (or Pro) next time if there will be one, I'm sure that will be able to open 6,000 tabs.

I should try this on my base (except for extra storage) M1 Ultra Mac Studio. With 20 cpu cores and 64GB unified memory with 800GB/s bandwidth, it should do ok. But then I’d have to install Chrome 🤔

Hey Ken, I edited the script so that it uses Safari, and on my 2017 MacBook Air, (Yes, 2017!) I have 1000 tabs, and all of them are useable. In fact, I have the 1000 tabs open as I'm typing this, and I can switch to them all! Maybe the M2 MacBook Air could get better results using Safari, since it is optimized? Idk really, but great (and hilarious) video!

Apple definitely needs to publish the dumbest crash reports. Probably includes a lot of crap from me, too. Try running the caffeinate command on tests like those. So there’s no power saving timer running in the background

Silly question - why is Chrome designed in a way where background tabs you can’t see aren’t unloaded? I mean keep a buffer of 100 or so tabs but why would it actually try and load and keep thousands of tabs running? Seems like a poor design choice. Many people keep old tabs around more as bookmarks, something to come back to later. They don’t need to be actively running using ram and cpu.

I was able to open 4055 chrome tabs on my HP 15-eh1052wm Pavilion 15.6" FHD Ryzen 5 5500U 2.1GHz AMD Radeon Graphics 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Win 10 before Chrome stopped responding but the apps like mail kept working.
