Update: I finally got the project to render on the PC. Interestingly I just disabled Resizable BAR and it rendered in 19 min 21 sec. I think the system was just flooding the VRAM with too much data all at once.

This is awesome and very useful. Much appreciated. I'm stuck buying the MBPM2 16" one step above base to avoid the dreaded, but probably not important SSD cripple. I need the better screen to help my eyes. But this is so great to see you even got into fusion. My current Macbook M1Air gets completely useless on those. Great info and thank you!

Thanks a lot for your video ! I'm a DoP as well as a colorist and I use a mac mini m1 with 16gb since it's launch, and it has been great ! I need to drop the timeline resolution to 1/4 on my grading projects because of the amount of nodes and effects but works good enough. The only downside is that the export time takes a lot, so i was looking for a replacement, because as you said, for us working professionals, time is money ! I was considering going for the base mac mini m2 pro but seeing the export times, made me realize that it will be better to spend a couple more and go for the Studio.... Well, i might just wait for the m2 max studio version to get the best of both worlds, thanks a lot for your video !

I was with you - last March if they had offered the Mac mini Pro - I would have grabbed it in a heartbeat. Instead they released the Mac Studio and it took me 5 mins before I ordered the Mac Studio base unit and traded in my Mac mini on it to soften the $$ blow. I have been happy ever since. All I can say about the Mac mini pro is it is 9 months or so too late. I have the MacBook Pro 14" as my road computer. But in the end - The Mac Studio is a beast and handles everything. Thanks for this review - definitely an honest evaluation using Resolve which I use exclusively,.

In today's cost, that's a $900 pc. The 13500 with igpu and a 4070ti would match the Mac mini cost and give a huge performance boost over your current pc setup. Not sure it's a fair test given it's the cheapest 13gen cpu

IIRC the Nvidia encoder affects the finial quality of the output. Footage modified in Handbrake and exported via NVENC looked significantly worse than a CPU only render. Can anyone confirm that this would be the case with Divinci as well?
@akyhne
@akyhne 3 месяца назад
You can't compare the two, as the way Handbrake and DR uses the NVENC differently. My experience is, that if you render out to a low bitrate, Handbrake does it better, than DR, and with higher bitrate, DR does it better. But you can do your own testing with FFMetrics. Im just curious why you would compare Handbrake to DR, as they do different things.

I had a similar problem with davinci failing on clips with NR. I found that lowering the number of frames that davinci has to analyze for NR fixed the issue for me. Not ideal but at least it finished the project.

AT LAST ... video that compares M2 Mini to a PC. Instant sub. I got exactly same problem with my PC (having 8GB of VRAM). I cannot render 2 advanced nodes on 1 clip at once (for example, denoize and deflicker, or deflicker and Dehancer). Which is annoying. So I'm looking for better editing station. And the choice is not so obvious. I can upgrade my PC with RTX 4090 (24GB of vram) for ~1500$. But not sure my CPU won't be a limiting factor. I can get M2 Pro, but then not sure how much RAM I need ... for reasonable M2 the price goes up to 2300$ (we got them more expensive here in Poland). Then it becomes close to M2 Pro or Max Mac Book Pro ... eh ... Hard choice :(. Do you got Dehancer plugin for Resolve? I cannot find any reliable source to see how it works on apple silicion especially M2 :(.

My card is a 2070 super with 8gb of RAM and I do not get that issue. I did get that error when trying to do an edit where the source clips were on a slower drive. Video editing is not generally CPU intensive except for bursts, I would recommend a 4070/4080 rather than a 4090, but make sure you have a resasonable CPU and good storage (biggest issue with resolve in my experience), also try to have 16gb ram or more. Yeah M1/M2 are very expensive here in Australia too, it would be about $4900 to get one comparable to my current system without a monitor and ignoring the storage I have. My current system is prolly only worth ~$1500-2000 now.

@@slipoch6635 I have checked with task manager (performance tab), and when I get this error my "dedicated GPU Memory" is full. Not sure what for "shared GPU memory" is, but it seems to be irrelevant for this error. I edit from USB3 SSD (t5) or Sata connected SSD via USB3 (Atomos Drive), from local NVMe (5GB/s) drive or from NAS. It does not matter for this error. If VRAM is depleted I still got it regardless the source of footage. I've checked how much RAM is taken when I render simple clips with some color grades (Dehancer based) and it's more than 16GB of system RAM and up to 8 GB of VRAM (or more and I get the error) - same case if running denoise + deflicker or denoise + some advanced grades. I hope on MAC this ram is taken once, so 16GB should be enough. And I hope it can actually swap that RAM so even if it's slower it will still render ... I've ordered cheapest M2 Mini to see if this is a case. I can return it within 14 days if I'm not happy, so will see. Guess ordinary M2 will be slower than my ryzen 7 2700X and RTX 2070. But I have to check it myself :D. If I'm happy with Mac I can order something better. I'm afraid I have to upgrade power supply, mother board and CPU for RTX 4090, so final cost will be close to specked M2 Macbook Pro.

@@JoATTech hmmm, I am running a 3900XT, 32GB of RAM and a 2070 super and I'm not getting this issue (although I did previously until I forced windows to use RAM rather than swap space) I wouldn't bother with the 4090, the 40 series cards are nothing special compared to the 30x series except they take less power. And the 4090 will speed up 3d and stuff like that, but I doubt it would be much of a gain over the 3070 as the cards are not really designed for video editing, but for games. It sounds like the version of resolve you are using may have a memory leak (I haven't updated in quite a while), I've had a few of those on occasion in DR. So it's possible they have buggered something up and it doesn't swap out quick enough or just chews through all the RAM until it dies. (memory bandwidth or maybe pci bandwisdth from usb drives on the MB maybe) It is also possible that they assumed people would be using high-memory quaddro & firepro cards and programmed for a base that exceeds ours, but it doesn't explain why mine works. It also doesn['t explain the bahviour where it always dies at the same point because at any given time more or less memory will be allocated, but a memory leak would explain this. Might have to drop them an email. The Mac should work, as I said in another post, it is one ecosystem and Apple will have them signed to a contract that says it must work on the air with no memory etc. So I would say it will be fine, One thing I didn't think of, I am running the nvidia studio drivers, that may make a difference. I assume you have done the paging and graphics changes (like manually setting CUDA?) here: videowithjens.com/davinci-resolve-your-gpu-memory-is-full-solutions/#Change-DaVinci-GPU-Configuration-Settings
@JoATTech
@JoATTech Год назад
@@slipoch6635 Thanks for the suggestions. The problem is there from Resolve 16 (through all version of 17 and 18), so it's not that particular version. I guess it's more a problem with Dehancer plugin, but sometimes when using Film Convert + some other intensive OFXes I got this too. Usually I got 1 clip on the timeline, sometimes 2. But seems VRAM usage is the same no matter how many clips are staked on the timeline. I always got the newest Nvidia Studio Drivers cause I do not game at all. So whenever there new version of Resolve I install newest Nvidia Studio Drivers. I got Resolve set to Auto in GPU tab, but it was Auto = CUDA. I've just changed it to manual CUDA, will see if this makes a difference. My windows used 0 swap since I got 32GB of RAM, but I will check paging settings too (not sure I've changed it like that or not. Probably not on this windows instance, but I tried it before and there was not difference). My guess is the most problematic is Dehancer plugin, because if I turn it off in most cases problem disappears. - and for 4k/6k they recommend 12GB VRAM graphics card. I use 4k timelines mostly, but playback is set to Half resolution. I considered RTX 3090 but after watching Gerald's Undone review of 40X0 series 4090 seems like better feature proof choice. And it's more power efficient than 3090/TI, and we got very expensive power lately here in Poland. Seems my cheap mac is being dispatched soon, since they just charged my credit card. Wonder how good/bad will be the experience :D. Now I'm downloading new version of Resolve and new Studio drivers, but I doubt it will help, cause what I've seen that every new version of Resolve got biggest hardware requirements and seems every time more memory is eaten even by empty timeline.

If your going to be doing a lot of noise reduction, optical flow, motion text, or using the AI engine in Resolve, the 10gb of Vram may cause you problems. It will run Resolve fantastically if you don't run out of Vram, but when you do it hurts. Also if your going to stick with pc make sure you pair the NVidia graphics card with a CPU that has an integrated graphics card. Intel chip starting with 11th gen has built in H.265 decoders that make editing the files easy. If you don't have those decoders it can be a problem. Intel chips with the a "F" in the model number DO NOT have the IGPU. DO NOT get a F model if you want to video edit. BTW I am a Panasonic user (GH6, G9, S5, and now S52) and run an 11th gen intel with a 8gb 3070. Runs great unless I use to many effects and run out of Vram. Then I have to jump through hoops to get around the issue.

While I am long-term PC user and I would never buy Apple for my personal use, the stability of the systems used in video production is unbelievable - running weeks no restart, working with large networked storage arrays, etc. I believe it's not really about the HW, but only about the fact that there is less variability in Mac than in PC and therefore a bit easier for the devs to catch the exceptional cases - such as the demoed workflow here in the video. But if you are a pro and your time translate directly to money, one crash on specific place in timeline might make all the difference between nice revenue and painful loss. In Europe PC Mac Studio M1 Max 10Core GPU 24C 64GB costs 3200 euros. For that price you can buy an Intel 13700K with RTX 4080 64GB 3 TB RAM 6000Hz. And of course in a couple of years the PC can be redesigned: a new processor and a better graphics card. But with PC Mac Studio there is nothing you can do, you can only resell it if they buy it. Mac Studio M1 good not a big PC, but you also need to take into account the fact that now developing neural networks and how it will work with these applications is not clear. Just slicing video and substituting text does not need a computer for a few thousand, if you have DaVinci you should already use all the features. That's why you need a serious machine for work or hobby. Thank you for the video.

To be honest, in the PC there is also not much you can do. After, let's say 2-3 years, if you would like to upgrade, you will have to buy new processor, probably new MOBO, because of the new processor standard. New graphic card if you want to. Also, you have to buy new power supply, bcs the old one is for sure too weak to handle new processor and graphic card. You will have to probably buy new RAM, bcs of the new standard or even not to bottleneck processor and graphic card. So you are now left only with old SSD. Of course, if you would like to upgrade RAM or SSD it will be cheaper. Later, you can sell old parts or keep it. The same with Apple products, which, however, hold the price for a long time and you can sell

It's built on a cut-down GA106 GPU with 1300 fewer CUDA cores than the GA104 in the 3060 TI, and the memory bandwidth is cut in half which means the 3060 TI actually has more memory available to the GPU in VRAM intensive tasks.

Kinda old video, but still... I should agree with the final thought that if you shoot on $3.5k camera and use all that fancy stuff - you should (IMO) use the best available stuff for editing and final rendering (and sure, you do, obviously, and the idea of 2 monitors, one for work, one for the result with the best possible color coverage looks great to me, better than "perfect" one which should cost more than 2 and not fit the need). So my opinion is - I should better build some decent PC instead of Macs to deal with such projects. And I could buy some spare parts, just to have parts to swap. And, you know, you could always upgrade/downgrade when you feel the need (selling the old unused stuff). For the build flaw - I've heard that Intel CPUs with efficiency cores render much faster than the ones without them (like, Ryzens). So it makes sense to have more core count And core speed, so the ideal build should have 13700k or 13900k. And yeah, 3060ti is a joke =). But ok, no complaints. (P.S. I've got 12600k+3070, it's a beast, but I don't render and, actually, don't use any 3d software, it's mainly used for drawing)

I asked myself the same question and after much thought I would likely have still bought the studio. My TB ports are full with TB drives and monitors so the front ports are a god send. As much as the faster refresh rate on HDMI 2.1 might be useful if you have it at 8k it's the only monitor you can use so, well, not ideal for me. Once you up the RAMM and stuff price skews quite a bit. But for me an extra 2 efficiency cores and the single core boost would be nice but for video graphics cores matter more to me. My friend who only really does music however, well he would take the mi ni pro all day. Horses and all that. Oh and my 512gb internal absolutely smokes the mini pro if that kind of thing matters to you!

The cost difference becomes totally meaningless _if_ your are editing/grading professionally. Because just one missed day of work due to crashes (and a bug hunting hour here and there quickly adds up) will cost you more in daily rates than the extra you'd have paid for the working machine. Which is while these days, even though I've built PCs all my life, I'm doing my day to day work on a Mac. Not because I love it so much, but simply because it's more reliable in the way it behaves.

@The Handsome Life Yes and no. Linux when it comes to desktop / graphics apps has the same issues. It's more the incredible amount of hardware combinations that you can run in PC land vs the very, very small number of well defined machines in Apple land. @@Teluric2 Sure. But it's also an entirely different use case. Apps like Resolve rely heavily on the stability of graphics drivers for example. And those can be a problem. Among other things, I was doing 3D rendering and vfx work for almost a decade. Most of it on Windows machines, and finding a stable driver version was anything but easy. Every update of any component would bring the chance of random crashes at render time. Or take Linux + nvidia cards. It's a nightmare. Again, it always depends on the use case and implementation.

The Vram issue for PC is totally real. Its a serious issue. What you have to do is right click the clips that won't render out and do "render in place" NOT saying this doesn't suck, just saying that's how you can at least get your render done. Can't believe NVidia didn't up the Vram in the 4000 series its not good. If your a heavy video editor in resolve you need at least 12 gig of vram for a 4k timeline with effects. 8 will get you in trouble if you try to do a lot of things.

@@jessecumberledge4530 I opt for 4090. Seems they get cheaper by 100$ last 2 weeks (at least in my country). My only concern is how good it will work with my old mainboard and Razen 7 2700X. Guess I might have to upgrade my power supply. @slipoch6635
@slipoch6635 Год назад
My advice having supported both would be a PC, as you can generally upgrade specific components. So you could start off with a mid-level system then if you want more ram, just upgrade that bit, need a lot of HDD space, put in 8 spinning disk hard drives in RAID 10 configuration, need better 3d performance? Then the video card (or add a 265/264 card in extra for output speed). And just add as you go. If you are not comfortable with that (or getting someone reliable to build that) then long-term it will not compete as the m1/m2 are currently slower than last gen PCs and do not get the performance uplift Apple expected, so there is a limiting factor on the processor (this is why all the benches are done at equivalent wattage). Avoid laptops as the cpus in those are generally ~20% slower and you often cannot upgrade them. I'm curious to see how a multi-gpu and multi-cpu system (1 of each) would perform with resolve and if there would be any uplift.

The problem with PCs is that there are more variables for the developers to work around, so you can have more issues. On Apple hardware, you only have so many configurations (especially since the M-series further truncates variability); so failure is less apt to occur. People love to hate Apple, but their concept of making things that 'just work' and get out of your way so you can work, makes them great for work applications. Anyone that just wants to be able to accomplish things that make them money will eventually get the point if they use a Mac long enough. I use everything. I have various Macs running the past several versions of MacOS. I have Windows PCs running 10 & 11. I have Linux machines running various distros. The Apple products create the least amount of hassle. (Windows being the worst because of its love of spontaneously breaking things, restarting for updates, etc.) When it comes to gaming, I still use a Windows PC. When it comes to doing anything important, I use a Mac. The Linux machines are more tinker toys, and while they can be as stable as a Mac - they do have challenges with updates. (This is why sysadmins usually update only when necessary, as newer isn't always better.) Compared to 20 years ago, all of the platforms are much better.

This is why people edit video on a Mac. A creative type shouldn't need to even know what vram is. They just expect their project to render. It's my suspicion that all NLEs are written for MAC first, then PC - if they have time. Also, Pro-Res is now an industry standard. Pro-Res on a Mac is native. On a PC Pro-Res is a pain in the butt. This was a great video. I was tempted to replace my old, but high-end PC, with a MAC mini or studio. It's good to know that the PC is still good enough, despite some stability issues in certain circumstances. Most of what I do is audio, PC is good for me.

Strongly disagree. I think the Mini m1 Pro model is overpriced and weirdly positioned. When adding 10gbe and upgrade to 32gb ram, the price is equal with a base Studio model. But the M1 Max gives you way better gpu performance. Also, the ports on the front are so convenient. Maybe it's a workflow thing. But spec wise, it doesn't make sense unless you REALLY want the smallest possible device. We work off a network storage so 10gbe is a must. Also, 16gb is not enough for most of our projects. Even 32gb has been a bottleneck a couple of times. For our new editors, I'm hoping the Studio M2's will have the same price as the current model, not the huge mark up like the Macbooks. Otherwise, discounted Studio M1's look like the better option.

If I were you, I’d think about blocking off a solid 3 weeks that you could dedicate to using a Mac exclusively-enough time to work through many of the little differences that switching OS comes with plus real-world use. Affinity apps of course are completely cross platform as are Adobe. You might find that you’re ok with the Mac but need to wait for a Studio release, or that a beefed-up Mini Pro would do it. Or look at Apple’s refurbished store (links in footer of site) for good discounts on an M1 Studio. I’ve worked in professional creative on both OSs; prefer Apple.

And we don’t know their Mac Pro plans yet. The M3 is projected to be an even bigger leap than M2, with a new 3nm process. Consider trying an M1 Studio and upgrading to an M3 or a Mac Pro in a few years? Or the Mini M2 Pro really still looks very good for your needs even with the 32gb RAM cap and a cheaper way to start. @@NickPowellPhotography For most people? Probably not. For you? If $300 won’t break your bank, then it’s a 20% CPU / 15% GPU boost and the comfort of knowing there is no higher tier. The reason I recommend the 1tb internal SSD is that its stripped across four NAND chips to run at 6k mbps, double the 512’s speed with only two NAND chips. For large file transfers, large exports, and RAM swap, it would likely make a difference for your workflow in a way that it wouldn’t for most people. And you’d just know you had the best, again. That’s $2,200. More than the base M1 Studio, but should easily outperform it based on what we’re seeing in reviews unless you go for the Ultra chip which is way more expensive.
