With the M3 Amphibious Rig over the Weser river: 4 Amphibious bridging vehicles were joined to set up a ferry service for a bicycle festival at the ferry terminal in Großenwieden, Germany. For the first time, the pioneers of the German Bundeswehr were supported by British soldiers.
The 360 hp amphibious vehicle has a 360-degree rotating jet propulsion system at the bow and stern. In ferry mode, up to 63.5 tonnes of payload are possible. The maximum speed in the water is 14 k.p.h.

Back in the days of the cold war, the British Army used to have an entire regiment equipped with M3 rigs in Germany, 28 Amphibious Engineer Regiment based in Hameln. With enough Rigs linked together, you can bridge the whole width of the river.

I used to work on these, the Mk2 version back in the 70/80's (28 Amphibious Engineer Regiment) out of Hameln near Hannover. They can also be a bridge if you have enough and a complicated pier set in the middle if the river was very wide. Two Mann Diesel engines, marine gearbox, transfer box (two of everything) and dead difficult to keep maintained. Seen many old Chieftain tanks going over the river on one of these. Loved my time in Hameln!

OK, I'm curious, do you think the basic design could be improved with some better / updated componentry (engines, gearboxes) to reduce the maintenance headaches? Admittedly, combination vehicles like this have a lot of tradeoffs, moving parts, and features with conflicting purposes that inherently increase maintenance needs. I find the concept and basic structure fascinating and think they could be very useful.

I honestly can't remember a warm sunny day while in the field or during training exercises. Sure beats the hell out of the Bailey Bridges we trained on in the ‘60’s although they required great coordination in positioning the components and assembly...and a lot of labor. But what a bridge system it was...

The original concept comes from a French officer (Colonel Gillois), and the first generation was built by a joint French German company. The M2 and M3 were later developments by EWK, the German contractor for the first generation. The French Army uses a slightly different version (EFA), built in France. The original Gillois was used by Israel to cross the Suez canal during the Egypt/Israel Kippour war.

Waste of money. You must think the Russians are real stupid. With real time imagining from space and drones. That small town will be wiped off the map. Thousands of bodies everywhere. Cars trucks everything will be taken out. Artillery and fighter jets will take them out. Nice try. Do you really think the Russians have not figured this all out? Every river crossing in Europe has been plotted. You dont get it. Thats what they do. I would. Good luck.

@@peternorthrup6274 , what does any of that have to do with the content of the video? Also, the amphibious vehicles have equally valuable peace time applications, most notably rescuing larger groups of people from areas that are flooded. I would consider these vehicles as hardly wastes of money because inland waters are just as valuable, if not more so, than seas and ports to a battlefield advantage. Finally, what are you going to do when an enemy has taken out important bridges in an area, you moron? Vehicles that are like these, as well as those that can make bridges, are invaluable to a war effort, as well as with accessing disaster areas.

Three Lieutenants were trying to cross a rough river in a storm. God appeared before them, granting them one request each. The first LT said "God, grant me the strength needed to cross this river." God gave him the muscle mass and endurance necessary; he swam across the river, reaching the other side in fifteen minutes and almost drowning thrice. The second LT said "God, grant me the means needed to cross this river." God gave him a kayak and paddle; he paddled across, reaching the other side in ten minutes and almost drowning once. The last LT said "God, grant me the intelligence needed to cross this river." God made him a Sergeant; he pulled out his map, realized there was a bridge just a few hundred metres upriver, and reached the other side in five minutes.
