You have to understand that most people buy the latest gen macs because they are due for an upgrade, because their current laptops are too old and in need of replacement. It doesn't matter if the latest mac is only an incremental upgrade, it's a brand new laptop replacing peoples old laptops.

I am a math and computer science teacher from Ukraine, living 200 kilometers (124 miles) from the front line. I use a MacBook Air M1 base model along with an iPhone 12 Mini and an AirPods Pro 2. These are the most expensive purchases I have been able to afford in the last 9 years of teaching.

In my day job, I am an executive (CFO), and my maxed out M1 MBA is my only work computer. It does everything thing I need, including complex spreadsheets, and it the best size / weight / power to travel with. The only issue I have with it is the lack of support for 2-monitors. However, I got around that by having my IT department get me 32" 4k monitor.

Im a DJ, I use my base M1 MBA to play live 6/8 times a month since nov 2022. Never an issue, incredible machine.

I don't think most users would be upgrading every generation. Maybe every 2-3 generations. For users on the M1 MBA, I would think they would be upgrading to the M3 or M4, and that's if they even need to. I'm on an M1 Mac Studio and there's no way I needed to upgrade to the M2 Mac Studio, even if the M3 Mac Studio came out next month I'd skip that too.

Constant RU-vid streaming, lots of tabs open, emails, shopping and social media. Previously though, I was doing extensive gene and phylogenetic analysis along with bioinformatics , microbiology & biochemistry research. 8gb Ram would not have held up . Thank you for the video ☺️ The toothbrush looks fantastic- definitely always best to use an electric toothbrush! Mine was a lot more expensive and so are the head replacements! I’m still using the base m1 MacBook Air and am completely satisfied with it. I’m also a graphic designer and this machine is capable of handling all my work with minimal slowdown only when I start opening 15+ tabs with adobe illustrator opened at the same time.

M1 MBA 8GB RAM. Python web dev, numbers spreadsheet, notes, online learning, youtube, web surfing. It's possible with 8GB RAM if you understand how the OS works. But that means I've to limit myself to 1 desktop in mission control, restart the laptop almost daily to purge the RAM usage by "Windowserver" and have not too many apps opened at any one time.

I just got one and I love it, design, speed, feel, battery, size and weight just for RU-vid and internet.

Going on 3 years with my MacBook Air M1 with 512gb and it still works great. I use it everyday and take it every where. I use it for RU-vid and video editing. The battery is still great!! I don't plan on upgrading no time soon, maybe a couple years from now.

I bought the M1 Air when the M2 came out, and I use it for both work and school.

I refuse to use my assigned windows laptop so I use my M3 MacBook Air for work. I use the standard Office programs, Remote Desktop to login to my servers, Teams, Zoom, Slack, etc. Since I don't code or develop locally, but rather via Remote Desktop, this Air handles everything like a champ. Memory usage or pressure is never an issue. I have a 16GB model.

I use it for Web browsing, light coding, occasionally edit video for Instagram on Final Cut Pro. My base model M1 is still perform like a champ.

Reports about declining Apple sales are just indicative of the fact that these Apple silicone chips were so powerful that people didn’t need to upgrade each year. Apple may benefit from upgrading their devices at a lower pace on a more consistent basis.

I got the misses M2 13 MBA 16gb ram and upped the storage for uni. Only forced the low power mode and mainly used for office applications and browsing. Works fine and she can keep that for good most likely

I have the og MacBook m1 air. been using it for about a year. i mainly use it for coding and content consumption. if any one is buying a MacBook Air try to buy the 16 gb ram version ... I have the one with 8gb and it has only 1 gb left in ran, but it still runs smoothly but if you are going to do some serious work on It opt in for the 16 gb or more.

I use it for DJing. I just got the M2 MacBook Air. It works amazing. Also, I do photography and simple video editing. M1 was an amazing chip. I wanted the 15” MacBook Air. It the best time ever to get a MacBook Air. Get 16 ram and you will be set!!

Actually just upgraded from 13” M2 air to 15” M3 air for bigger screen (both 16/512). The 13” was just to small for me. I work in marketing and have several online side hustles along with some music production, a lot of productivity/multitasking work. The air is more than enough for all of this.

BASE M1 MACBOOK AIR FOREVER, i got it in December 2020 and it is still working hard

I had a Razer Blade 15 4k Oled laptop with a 9750h and 2080max q since 2020. It was a beast of a laptop, but my main point of getting it was to have a mobile music production device that could game when i felt like it. Eventually I got tired of lugging it around because it was simply too heavy with the device and charger and even without the weight issues the battery life was abysmal at roughly 2 hours of use before I had to plug it in. I have never been an Apple fan but 7 months ago I decided I would try out the 13 inch m1 macbook pro and boy it has not disappointed. Sure the graphics power isn't great and i do miss oled but it can do basic gaming and I have a truly mobile music production set up now that i dont have to keep plugged in every 2 hours. Even in 2024 the m1 is fully satisfying my needs and I'm gonna be hard pressed to upgrade any time soon especially since I'm the weirdo that actually likes the touchbar since it is super helpful for music production.

I have a 16/512 m3 mba. I use it for lighter work like studying, 2d game development, coding small assignments. It’s great but it’s only downside for me is the screen size when I need more. For everything else I either use my 16in mbp or my gaming laptop. Still think if i only had one a 14in mbp would be the ticket.

i have a base model m1 macbook air and i edit a lot of raw sony photos in lightroom for my business, it’s been keeping it up pretty well. when i have the money i’d love to upgrade to the m3 or whatever latest model, but i don’t mind getting another air. the performance is more than fine for me, it even handles some iphone 15 pro 4k video editing very smoothly.

I need advice. I’m a uni student and I only ever use my laptop for my uni coursework and also to play sims 4 (with loads of downloaded mods). I’m so stuck on what MacBook Air I should upgrade to. I’m considering M2/ M3 with possibly 16Memory and 512Storage but I’m not sure if I’ll be wasting money on the extra GB and SSD. If anyone has any advice on what I should get I’d be so grateful 😭

Based on the target market for the M3 Air, casual users and light office workers, the M3 Air is a good option as long as the work software isn't limited to Windows only (Power BI). Especially with dual screen option now. Add on the best single core performance. However, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s (with Ryzen 7 7840U CPU) and Dell Latitude 5000s/7000s series are the best for office work. Better ports, 16GB of RAM space, adjustable SSD, and access to all Windows software.

There is a noticeable difference between M1and M2\M3 models. First off, design. M1 looks quite old, this design was with us for many years. There is an enhanced camera, which is important this days. And, of course, a 15 inch model. Which was the reason I took M2 15 inch version. In terms of 8\256gb configuration... well, I have one just like that and feel zero problems with it. Of course, I use the laptop for basic stuff like working with docs, presentations, watching videos and web browsing. But why would I buy an Air if I used it for heavy stuff?

I use it for browsing mostly. Occasionally I code in it, but prefer my Linux. I also use the mac's terminal for launching brew, git and newsboat

And as for the nonsensical take on the upgrade costs, YT creators really badly need to understand it. There is a common consensus that the default config should be 16GB/512GB, so we start there. Apple charges $1500 for this model, 100% in line with nearly every premium ultrabook with the same specs. So, the so-called upgrade costs cannot be deemed excessive as there is no disparity when comparing like-versus-like. Apple is competitive if you want a default configuration of 16GB/512GB, but if you are willing to downgrade to half the SSD and/or the RAM, you can get up to $400 off. So, Apple is reducing by $400 for those downgrades, and considering that the components cost a lot less, it is clear Apple is subsidising the base model to access more consumers (demand-side economics). Reducing them by a total of $100 (cost) would have a limited effect on the demand. Apple is not a charity, so by subsidising the cheaper variants, they balance that with the same $200 per staged component upgrade cost if you want to increase beyond 16GB/512GB. But as that is deemed the default config, those buying higher specced models will be limited. People need to acknowledge and understand that Apple offers 16GB/512GB for $1500. That will be the price, whether that or the 8GB version is the base. By killing off the option to downgrade, Apple will not magically reduce their prices by $400, for the same reason Dell, MS, LG, Samsung, et al. won't! So all these people saying Apple should not have that spec have lost the plot as that would deprive people of the choice to save money and would be the dumbest business move in history (>60% of MB Air sales are the base config)! There is good reason that MS also starts at 8GB/256GB with the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro; they also know what they are doing and pay no attention to YT comments. Of course, creators never flex on MS. Apologies for the essay, but the constant negativity on the base config is unfair and poorly done.

7:27 Phone that costs same as Macbook Air or more, with 5-6" screen, no keyboard, small battery, slower CPU/GPU... If you look that way MBA gives much more tech per dollar. Anyhow, good review :)

The M1 Macbook Air is Apple's GTX 1080 - The leap they made with it was too good that it made it's successors look like lazy incremental updates by comparison.

I’m a web developer and I use the 8GB M3 Air

I use my M1 Air for web development: Python, Django, Wagtail, Flask, PHP, Laravel.

Hobbyist photographer here. the Macbook Air M1 (upgraded to 16G Ram and 512G SSD) is my main machine for basically everything other than gaming. Mostly using Lightroom for my photo workflow. Mostly fine and performing well, until I use its new AI denoising function, which can slow down and warm up the machine quite a bit. For the record, it takes 1 min per photo (26M Raw pic) ri complete the said AI denooising function, comparing to 10 second on a windows laptop with RTX 4060 Mobile, i7-13700H + 32G Ram. Still decent tho. And if run on Intel UHD Graphic, it takes 4 min per pic

This may not be a surprise to most but M1 users will likely not need a new machine until an M7 or M8 Mac release. M1 was a leap in computing. Every other release has been marginal at best.

The simple answer is because they have HUGE profit margins for the upgrades. And - who’s gonna stop them? No one. You’ll still buy those expensive upgrades regardless.

IMHO the problem is not that the base specs are not enough for everyday work, because with the level of optimization these chips reached they clearly are. The problem is that they’re absolutely not enough FOR THE PRICE. Add in the fact that Apple always pulls stupid stunts(like putting a slower SSD in the base model) and that pisses everyone off. I wanted to change my dying old gaming laptop for a while now and wanted a Air since now I do lighter work and don’t game, but there’s no way I’m spending that much for a 256gb SSD and 8gb ram shared between CPU and GPU(so it’s even less than you think) and by the time I upgrade these things I’m better off buying something else actually worth that higher price. Apple should really just cut the bs and sell the base Air with 512gb of SSD(not the slow one) and 10/12gb of RAM. That would be the day I finally get one without feeling ripped off and suggest it to everyone in the blink of an eye.

"Boring" MB Air M3: it's rather unfair as the average upgrade cycle for laptops is 5+ years, and many Mac users will keep even longer, so expecting a revolution every cycle is unrealistic. Apple is, instead, optimising and realigning how its model line-up works to prepare for the long run. That makes much more sense than reinventing the wheel every year. Bearing in mind the upgrade to the M3 from the M2 was significant and, compared to Intel's 13th gen to the 14th gen, a much better upgrade, I am unsure why Apple gets micro-analysis, yet Intel (and AMD this year as well) seem to get sponsored videos from the usual creators with maybe a few seconds to highlight the non-existent upgrade...

Ha ! Look for EVERY Windows/PC maker to start offering portable units with fixed RAM and Storage options.....just like Apple. This is already happening with Dell's latest XP line. The RAM is Soldered to the motherboard. X86-based legacy hardware has very little overhead left, especially in laptop form-factors. In order to get faster, X86 has to get BIGGER.....bigger dies.....bigger batteries .....bigger power input requirements....bigger cooling fans and sinks.....bigger heat output. Apple's design philosophy is the industry leader....again !

Why Does Apple KEEP Doing This? Do you mean why Apple keeps solding the RAM and SSD and make an expensive planned obsolescence laptop? Soon or later RAM and SSD will fail and there is no option to repair those components and a whole new computer is gonna be throw to the trash.

I still have my 2019 Macbook pro 13 inch. It is more than capable for my needs (photoshop, XD). I'll upgrade when absolutely necessary.

i use my m1 2020 air for dailly websurfing, writing my letters, reading books and content, sometimes email, sometimes coding, sadly no gaming 🥲. something which i used to do on my previous windows laptop. quiet happy though with the mobility, work capacity, the fluid and premium experience. would have been a complete experience if and only the gaming aspect would have been as good as the windows laptops. that would have been awesome. 🤩

Use ms office and teams. Then tell me 8gb is enough. Hang out in teams meetings all day and tell me battery life is not an issue. Bottom line is inefficient apps need more than the base model delivers. It’s not about video editing. For $1100 you can get brand name windows laptop with 16” touchscreen with 16gb/512gb. The air is a luxury item, it should not be shipped in a crippled configuration in my opinion.
