The first fuel filter between the tank and the engine is replaced. Parts Used: LuberFiner 261F - Fuel Filter Every M35A2 is a "Deuce And A Half", but not every "Deuce And A Half" is an M35A2.
This why i converted to napa 4770 filter housing and spin on filter, well worth the money, time takes to change filter, and most of all, the ease of spin off and spin on.
You don't need to remove the alternator. Just do as was mentioned below and loosen the tensioner bolt then slide the alternator upward as far as it'll go. I use a spud wrench aka Crescent wrench with a pointy handle, to loosen the filter bolt. Then I'll get domebody to hold that in place while I crawl under the truck and remove the canister from below. I can then pour out the reservoir into a bucket. Takes two seconds. Then change filter and while the other person is still holding the wrench, I screw the housing back on. Then snug down the bolt on to and finished. I reuse the old gasket if it's still in good shape. No need to replace them every time you change the filter.
An easier way would be too take out the mounting bolts for the filter bracket. Drop that bracket below the frame and re-insert the bolts. It'll give just enough room to get a wrench in there to loosen that bolt then spin the filter off by hand
I used a fuel filter leather belt wrench to get the filter housing lose by sticking only a wrench to hold the nut.The fuel filter housing o-ring is toast anyway.
I just loosen the slide bolt on the alternator push it towards the engine and then loosen the top bolt on the filter go below and un screw it install the new filter and gasket tighten it up and get a 2x2 to tighten the belts ,it takes me less than 10 minutes
