In the EXCITEMENT of finding the scores, I may have worked out the Percentage increase the wrong way around in comparing M4 to the other Processors - apologies... But the charts really shows the difference ☺ M4 vs M1 is more like a 75% increase in CPU score and around a 20% increase over M3
I am impressed. I wonder how quickly the new M4 iPads will be selling out. I also wonder if the new iPads will really be able to do all of the editing someone needs to produce a professional video or podcast. Or will you still need a MACbook to do that?
Yes but you could edit videos and do a podcast on apple mobile devices dating back to early 2000s… they were called laptops. In all seriousness it didn’t take much horse power to do either task if… you have time to let it render. The trade off is cost for speed like everything else.
@@DeborahCarlstonWhy you cannot do it today? I understand that you might not have a full rendering, motion graphic tool on an iPad. But that’s more a lack of software problem than anything else. Producing videos for youtube or podcasts you for sure can do with an iPad today.
Man just do the math yourself. If 10 cores does ~14620 on geekbench multi core, then 9 will do ~X. Solve for ~X. If it’s a performance core so it’ll probably be a lil bigger than 10%, but not by much, maybe 15%
Just ordered a high spec'd M4 iPad Pro to replace a 5 year old low end Samsung that costed less than 1/4 the price. For what I do now, I don't need the power, but I can afford it, and I wanted the option to extend what I do with my tablet to fancy games, music recording, and photo/video editing. I considered the much less expensive M1 or M2 iPad, but the other improvements of the new M4 iPad convinced me: better screen, pencil, keyboard, and performance. I opted for the 1TB option mainly because it also ups the RAM from 8GB to 16 GB, but also for the 1 extra performance core, which makes a difference in multitrack music production.
Sheeesh yeah this absolutely wipes the floor with the i5 12 core in my dell precision 7670 workstation laptop. And the iPad is doing it while fanless using a small fraction of the power too 😭😭😭 apples chip efficiency is truly astounding. Is it safe to say this is the most efficient cpu the world when it comes to performance per watt?
Even the M3 Max 16-inch gave the workstation Dell Precision 7670 good competition while being drastically lighter to carry. The M4 Max 16-inch is going to be interesting.
A new subscriber here, one that has had a new Mac Studio with all the bells and whistles in his shopping cart for more than a week now. I have spent long hours trying to wrap my head around all of this M4 buzz. The last time that I paid 26K for my Mac Pro I learned a week later that I could have purchased a Mac Studio for less than 1/3 the cost and with performance that trounced my major purchase. I’m trying desperately to not make the same mistake. I know it’s impossible to know for sure, but what does your gut tell you about when we can expect a major upgrade to the Mac Studio. Some “experts” say this summer while others seem pretty certain that it will be at least another year out. Help me Mr. Wizard!
The real reason is the process node improvements. The M3 was the first chip with the new process but the M4 has the refined process and it performs very well.
I don't even have an M-series processor in my iPad Pro; I have an A12X processor with a 1,360 single-core score, 4,622 multi-core score, and 17,175 GPU metal score. Still running awesome. When I finally upgrade my iPad, I don't think I'm going to get a Pro this time; I might just get a newer iPad Air.
A12X was such a milestone. I think all of apples Arm Software for MacOS was developed with this chip (or the slightly better A12Z). A12X proved that arm could be the future and indeed it was. I still got my 2018 iPad Pro as a daily driver (it even replaced my old windows Laptop). I think I wouldn‘t upgrade to another iPad Pro, since they have become very expensive, but I hope the iPad Air gets 120Hz one day. LCD is completely fine for me.
Performance wise the iPads are very overpowered for what they are. The Air has plenty of power for 99,9% of users. Unfortunately it still doesn't have a 120hz display. That's the only thing that made me go for the Pro.
@@thomasegeland1847agree, I love the promotion and Pro screen. But i love fast machine so overpower is always good news for me. But it’s also not only the machine, high efficient built apps are also part of it.
How do you think the 9 core M4 will fair in comparison to the M2? The 256GB model is gimping the performance cores as well as the RAm being 8GB compared to the 16GB on the 1TB and up models.
As far as we know Tim The Accountant soon iPad will have Ultra Pro Max Ultimate Plus M20 chip.. and still on kidsOS and 1mm thin to save on battery cost.
M1 to M4 75% increase but the OS doesn’t take advantage of the horsepower and unless you’re an artist there is very little software that will take advantage of it.
Yeah, I personally need to have XCode on iPad to build/and run my applications. And it turns out that only a macbook is capable of this 😭 Apple COME ON! clang, xcode, clion, intellij - we neeeed all that.
I purchased the M4 11inch pro to use doing photo edits. But my everyday, do it all is the Mini. If the next one is a major upgrade I will make the move.
@@veYda25 don't ask Apple for support. Propose to game developer a deal. Prove the numbers, ie. they can sell 100k copies at $60 on this iPad Pro if you port your games over. If they see the incentive, they'll do it.
I like your charts much more than Max Tech's! Great that you did all standard vs M4, same thing for all Pro and Max vs M4! Really good! I would say for average/normal users if you're on M1-M3 today it's not worth it to buy a new M4 device because of better performance. Wait for M5 or M6. If the battery is bad in your iPad or MacBook and it got M1 then it might be a good reason for a new device with M4. For PRO customers you probably gonna buy a new device much sooner. Buying advice is very difficult. Depends on so many factors: the main question is "what do you do with your computer?" and then it's about money. But this is great news that M4 is very promising! M4 Pro and Max will have more CPU cores in total but the configuration is impossible to predict...
In theory this is actually more power than I need for my workflow but ironically I can’t do that workflow on an iPad which is boring analytical spreadsheets and infographic PowerPoint slides 😕 Either way I’m happy with my M1. Would have been good if the new keyboards were backwards compatible. Good show Matt 👍🏾
Groovy. Feels like the M3 was just out a or two ago. As cool as this M4 chip is I’m satisfied with my current devices. Maybe a few more years down the line, I shall get the latest one.
M4 is a power house but to unleash this beast to its full potential Apple really need to improve its iPad OS can’t wait for complete M4 family to release…
I am actually more interested in whether or not accessories for the M2 12.9” iPad Pro will also work with the new M4 iPad Pro 13” (particularly in regards to magnetic stands/arms/etc) I’m wanting to use it for video connect doctors appointments and online classes and don’t necessarily like the tension grips commonly used for tablets in those mounting devices
As a PhD in computer engineering, I migrated from an 16" Intel MBP (undergraduate + internship and graduate + internship years) to a M1 then a 16" M3 MBP( only purchased because of the space black color theme ) then possibly a M5 or M6 in the future. For compiling and rending programs in both C++ and .py, a M1 MBP will suffice. But if you can afford the latest technology, go for it: it is your money after all, lol. I recently purchased a space black M4 w/512 GB due to the dual OLED screen and space black color- I mainly use an iPad for reading, taking notes, and watching RU-vid content...
All this extra performance is great but the software is lagging big time. Whats the point of all this power if you will never use it. When I got the m1 iPad Pro I figured there was going to be some huge software updates to take advantage of it. Three years later and it’s still a just a iPad running iPad os.
My m1 iPads are still more powerful than anything I throw at it even needs. I really want the m4 iPad Pro for the oled but that would be the only reason I would get one.
I use my M1 iPad Pro for work, technical drawing, writing songs, gaming, media consumption. I have yet to do anything that has really stressed it and it has never maxed out, even on huge complicated tracks with stacks of effects. I can’t imagine what this thing can do processing wise, but really, what is out there that is really utilising any of that power?
Around US $400 to go from 512 GB to 1TB SSD, which is required to go from 8GB to 16 GB. Also adds one performance core, totalling four, with 6 efficiency cores staying the same.
Keep in mind these scores are for the 10 core M4 which is only availble in the 1 and 2 TB variants and not the 9 core with 1 perfomance core missing in the 256 and 512 GB variants which most people will choose probably. But it looks still impressive if it is true
I want to see a breakout of the score components. I've read somewhere they have added more vector support, which is easier to implement at scale, and this can result in huge gains in very specific tasks. Something isn't right here.
Now even the basic M4 destroy the X Elite (which is not the basic M chip competitor, if you missed the announcement about the cheaper Snapdragon X Plus, that is the proof the X Elite is at least the M4 Pro/M4 Max competitor, so the more expensive against the more expensive.. keep in mind even the "cheaper" X Plus can be costy.. the Snapdragon 8 SD 2 had $160 price tag 2 years ago.. and in this chip there are more cores and 4 years of engineers payments, so don't expect it will be cheaper like theb1 year development with 1 year engineers payment..)
Cores can mean nothing - only performance cores tend to be used in audio. Will be interesting to see how they compare when in the pro laptops as the performance core count really changes the results. For an iPad at the moment it’s overkill unless they really push iPadOS
This chip is putting out THE SAME PERFORMANCE as the **TOP SPECCED** M2 PRO AND M3 PRO CHIPS. Remember how there are different versions of the Pro series chips? This IPAD with a base m4 chip is doing the same multicore performance as the BEST VERSIONS of the m2 pro and m3 pro chips
Last generation, apple set the expectations for us that the pro chips are meant to be about 50% more powerful than the base chip, and the max is meant to be just under twice as powerful as the base chip, and so we should expect similar numbers for the m4 pro and max
This means the M4 Max performance, assuming they keep a 16 core cpu, which they probably won't, is going to be at least ~24000 multicore, but apple may decide to push that up to around ~26000 multicore if they feel like they need to increase the core count to match increase in core count on the base m4. This means the m4 pro is probably gonna be around ~17,500-20,500. Last generation, apple set the expectations for us that the pro chips are meant to be about 50% more powerful than the base chip, and the max is meant to be just under twice as powerful as the base chip, and so we should expect similar numbers for the m4 pro and max
There are already at least 4 other tablets with less than 6mm thickness, it's just marketing, i mean even the 2022 iPad just 10% thicker. Did you heard any bending problems in the past 2 years?
@@MattTalkTech All these techs has become more of show off devices rather than practical tools. It's like owning a 600hp Ferrari you can't use for daily shopping then you've got 80mph speed limit on the road plus most people doesn't know how to drive 😆
what the actual f. Here i thought windows laptop was about to touch the heel of M series Mac snappiness with the Snapdragon X Elite. Then they went and nonchalantly put out a 20% single core jump ?
No worries. In short if you got a MacBook in 2020 or iPad Pro in 2021 with an M1 Processor inside, this new M4 Processor what is the heart of the new iPad Pro in 2024 runs at around 75% faster
just do the math bro, it's just a fraction. Did nobody on this video learn fractions? If a 10 core model does ~14620, then a 9 core model will do X. Solve for x, and then you have your estimate, and it'll probably be slightly higher than 9/10ths, since increasing core count slightly diminishes returns as the number increases. So it'll probably be closer to like 9.1/10 in terms of performance.
@@Dwilsonmusic145uh huh? Like what? Again, I never said it’s directly linear, it’s an approximation. And so yeh, based on the other chips, it’s probably gonna be approximately 10% less performance. Might be a lil more, might be a lil less, but reducing it by that ratio is going to be fairly accurate. And if it’s missing a performance core, might be a lil higher, like 15%
As far as we know Tim The Accountant soon iPad will have Ultra Pro Max Ultimate Plus M20 chip.. and still on kidsOS and 1mm thin to save on battery cost.
i love the brand new design of an IPad Pro looks more very nice and Thinner and upgrades the new performance I hope to be the one lucky one winners of your another giveaway watching from Philippines 🤩😍
The most interesting thing is how Apple will handle their computers. Will they reverse the releases to a MacPro/MacSudio > MacBook Pro > MacBook Air release model, or will they continue the MacBook Pro > MacBook > MacPro/MacSudio model. And thus gift the PC world (with its Snap Dragon CPUs) a free one year headstart, in the pro market. Releasing M3 equipped MacPro/MacSudio computers would be pure stupidity, with M4 equipped iPads. And I guarantee that they will not sell many M2 equipped MacPros/MacSudios. Apple hasn't been above taking stupid decisions before, so what do you think? I was planning on bying a MacStudio this year, but there's no way I'll waste money on an M2 model. Am I the only one?
Also, Look up Lenovo Legion Y700 2023 8.8 inch Android Gaming Tablet... Only Android Tablet rocking Dual USB-C'S... Besides the MS Surface Pro 9... Which Compare to those Power House Apple M4 Ipad Pro... Still rocking just a single USB-C'S...Same with Samsung Tab-S9... 🧐🤓🥸🤯
The law of diminishing returns is strong. Makes sense this pro model or the M5 will have OLED- cuz they need to sell us something other than a more powerful chip we won’t notice. Increasing base storage this year is an absolute must. Would be nice to get more ram too, but I assume they’ll wait on M5 for that too.
No this is still an important step forward because the more people that get these new generations of chips, the more developers can start making apps with this kind of power and higher levels of functionality in mind. You might not notice now because you are using apps that were originally designed with Intel Macs in mind, and are slowly moving towards finding ways to take advantage of this power, but you'll see that soon software will catch up and you'll be wanting more power again. But for anything related to the internet, yeh more speed is gonna matter as much until we figure out how to get faster internet services, that's the biggest bottleneck right now
An M4 iPad is essentially a macbook without the keyboard. They wont be updating it for years and the Macbook air will be this fast someday. The macbook air costs $1,700 for one with 16gb ram and 1tb drive, an option FEW choose because of its ridiculous cost for a laptop. So now Apple says, hey, lets give them something that is just as much tech as a macbook, whoops, if they did that the Ipad would end up being the same price as last years. So, lets FORCE people to get the 1TB model so the price jumps to 1,900, the cost of the macbook air with those same components plus extra for the cost of the new display. Its not a rip off based on how apple prices their computers, its just a complete and total rippof that they have to use their own overpriced hard drives to get the prices of these things to be higher than they should be. Apple doesnt care about its crippled lower spec models. They only care about maxed out systems and those are always $500+ more than their prices. When will people tire of these tactics and stop falling for this every year? If it wasnt for college students using student loans to buy these Apple would be forced to be reasonable with price. When the college bubble burts so will apples ability to gouge its customers.
All the haters said that m4 wasn't gonna be a big upgrade. They said it was only gonna be like a 10-15% increase in power, but anyone who was paying attention to TSMC and the semiconductor world knew this was coming, this is a massive increase and the m4 pro and m4 Max chips are going to be insane, and the m5 lineup is probably going to be even bigger of an upgrade than this, since TSMC will be onto their next major process node by M5. The other thing here is that while people are always getting hung up on the 'percentage changes' from year to year, but remember, the absolute gains from generation to generation are incredibly huge. The jump in single core performance here is just as big as the jump from m1 to m3. The jump from m3 - m4 is bigger than the jump we got from intel to m1. People lose perspective here when they only think about this in terms of percentages, but these increases are incredible. We're increasing compute power, in absolute terms, at a mind boggling rate
@@johnrobrox8324 lol yeh true, only certain professions or really tech savvy users will know how to take full advantage of this power in this ipad. It’s unfortunate, but apple likely won’t put the full macOS experience on there since it would eat into their laptop sales. But regardless, if you actually know what you’re doing, this iPad is going to be much more useful and powerful than you are giving it credit for. I personally don’t care about iPads and never have, I just use my phone and MacBook, but this is going to be awesome for a lot of people. I’m more interested in the m5/m6 Macs when those come out.
Apple has been killing the hardware power lately! Really cool. Just a shame they gimp it with their softwares. Gaming is still hugely better on Windows. If they could just fix that, along with their outrageous pricing, I think they could bring over a lot of people that currently use Windows.
