Another great review Patrick! Held my interest from beginning to end - even though I am not in the market for a new iPad. I’m always interested in hearing your take and evaluation of Apple products.
I think calling iPadOS a glorified iOS is unfair. Not going to argue that it needs to evolve faster (vs the slow drip...drip...drip of features), but looking back (to iPad 1) the OS has really come a long way. I use to hate it and I can't say that anymore. Still, I agree, I wish Apple would give iPadOS more love because the iPad (and the fans) deserve it.
Honestly the folks that upgrade every year is why apple keeps the trinkle of features to a minimum imo. If folks held out longer, prices could be lower 🤷🏾♂️
I have an iPad Pro and now the new iPad Air M2 and performance wise I can't tell the difference. However I still gravitate to my iPad mini and cannot wait for the ipad 7 to be announced
@@PatrickRambles yes but not entirely. With an incredibly bright display, the shadow just adds an additional dimension to help with precision. I think you are right in that they didn’t need to add the feature however it’s just a small aid for artists.
I couldn’t agree more wrt your comments about iPad OS. I really IS about time that, for a device this pricey, AAPL finally gives us a functioning Finder-something with proper window management (Stage Manager is a kludgy mess in this regard) and proper file management. I talked a friend into buying an iPad a few years ago and just yesterday she called wanting help figuring out how to send an image taken using her iPad’s camera to someone else. This is a task that’s easy to explain when done on a Mac and a convoluted mess to explain using iPad OS. Giving these two features (window management and file management) full parity with their counterparts in Mac OS would not “gut” the market for Macs but rather it could enhance the market for both. If file management and moving from app to app were not so painful, I’d be using my iPad more and probably would not have waited 6 years to upgrade from my 2018 iPad Pro. I’d still use my Macs as my primary productivity tools, but I’d be using the tablet features on my iPad far more often. They complement each other; they don’t compete with one another. C’mon, Apple. Stop treating iPads like annoying little stepchildren, tolerated but not embraced!
I actually love iPadOS but I agree apple needs to step it up. I would love to see : - Multi user profile support - a fully customisable Home Screen / app placement - the transition of “files” into “finder” - possibilty to have multiple Audio sources at the same time - Xcode for iPad Pro (not for myself but it’s a 1st party app many have been requesting for) - more full sized “AAA” games on the platform (realize this is largely outside of Apple’s control) - improve Stage manager to make it more like the windowing on the Mac (which in my personal view is also not as good as Windows but still), get rid of the max 4 windows limit. - a calculator app (😂) I personally like the standard multitasking split / slide over in iPadOS so I don’t want them to touch that (no pun intended), but i think via stage manager they can introduce optional features.
don't worry guys, I'm just going to use the scratch as an opportunity to make a DIY nanotexture finish by sanding the screen with 800 grit sandpaper. I'm sure it will work perfectly, trust me. (never trust me)
I know how thin it is not being talked about as a big deal, but I truly love how thin it is. I agree a thicker with longer would be better. I am truly liking how thin. Even with the Magic Keyboard it is amazingly thin. I know the unit is way over powered for what the IOS has to offer. But, I have hopes Apple will make some great changes in the software. It seems to take them a lot of years to get what we want. Just look at how long it took them to move the camera or second monitor support. Took many years, but we got it eventually. I have hopes the IOS will catch up too. Great video, I truly look forward to each of them. I learn a lot.
Great video. I have the M2 11inch iPad pro and love it. I have the magic keyboard I bought used off ebay so I saved a few bucks. I am a huge iPad fan but even I have no interest in the m4 models. I never owned a Mac so the iPad is the closest thing I have to a Mac computer
I think the iPad now is not much different than a MacBook Air, except it has the touch screen support as well as amazing Apple pencil support. So why does Apple not think this new iPad would be good as a MacBook replacement? Personally, I think they could slap MacOS on it and it would be just like a MacBook, but also with the additional drawing and touch capabilities. To me that sounds amazing. Apple is certainly going to make something like that one day. But will it be like this. To me the iPad seems perfect for it. They just need to enable the software. Hell, I have also been clamoring for 16 inch versions of the iPad. Then with the magic keyboard it would be even more indistinguishable as a Mac. And the possibilities of having a device that acts as a Mac and a iPad in one are exciting. Like perhaps interchangeable hardware even. Not to mention they could just allow you to install iPadOS and MacOS on two separate parts of the hard drive. I really wish they would do this because you would think it would be simple to allow and the device would easily handle it. They just don't want to. And for me it would open up way more options to use the iPad. You could run MacOS with Parallels running Windows and also run iPadOS if they just allowed it. All on the same device... All with the best screen thats drawable in the form factor of MacBook Air... But they could make the iPad in any form factor also... Please Apple please do this. Again, I'm really hoping that this is in their plans, but something makes me thing Apple will try to squeeze out every penny from its customers buying less useful products while they develop these technologies. Hopefully we will see this insane device with insane value soon. But I bet the price will also be insane 🤣
Man you’re spittin facts out here. These other reviewers just won’t keep it real. We are not saying we want it to run exactly like MacOS but better and more refined than the current state of iPad OS. If it continues to run like iPad OS is running there literally is no point of putting any faster chips in it at the point.
I was so unimpressed I skipped the iPad upgrade and went for the M3 MacBook Air & I am obsessed! Was going to trade in my M1 iPad Pro but I’m keeping that too 😂
I guess if I didn’t already have an m1 I would def want one. But I also have the iPad mini 6 and the m2 Mac mini lol don’t get me wrong it’s cool but I think I just needed a MacBook in the mix
@@PatrickRambles you dont 'see' it. the flickering is that fast you dont see it but...your eyes do dedect it and this is causing headaches, eyestrain and in worse case diziness. Its a known issue for years with oled screens. Smartphones, tablets, tv screens etc but not everyone is sensitive to it. Sadly the screens used on samsung all use it. Apple now too as they use samsung screens but there are a few chinese companies that use a more expensive solution to adjust the brightness not pwm Sadly most reviewers only rave about the oled and blacks etc but fail to mention it does cause problems for some people... I am one of them. Wanted to buy the top samsung s9 tablet,,,could not because they use oled and pulse width modulation, same wit apple top end so ended up with ipad 10th ips screen ps pwm is worse the lower the brightness level. there are some youtibe reviewers who test it
Is it just me or is the audio on the new iPad Pro 13 M4 not as good as the 2018 iPad Pro? Is it just me or is the picture quality on the 2018 iPad Pro picture better than the M4? Is it just me or is the Magic Keyboard exterior quality incredibly poor and marks really easily. Pencil is ok though. Returning the M4 and keeping the 2018. Oh I can no longer access the RT app on the M4. Good buy M4!!
I respect a RU-vidr that wear’s a REAL watch! Says a lot about this channel to me. As in that not EVERYTHING one owns or wears HAS TO BE electronic. It’s a breath of fresh air. #NoDateSub
Great video as always - disagree on the thinness though - the larger iPad Pro really benefits from the weight reduction which for me is very important as I use it as a tablet all the time. And the battery life is still great + it recharges much faster in the keyboard. So for me personally less weight > more battery. - agreed on the hinge - looks much better but a bit less practical to open compared with the previous one.
I agree with you, I was hoping Apple would increase the battery(they should have kept the thickness of the previous iPad or maybe made it a little thinner), gave us better speakers than the M2 iPad, and made the quality of the front facing camera as good as my Samsung tab s9 Plus or the Lenovo tab Extreme.
The only reasons anyone should buy this is for upgrading from a 3 year or older iPad (Pro or not) and you have the money or financing option to do so. That’s exactly why I got mine lol. Plus, I don’t have a laptop so the Magic Keyboard being as awesome as it is in this newer version helps me feel like I have a Macbook Air with Macbook Pro hardware.
I’m debating on which to get for my use case. I do use 3D app Nomad Sculpt, procreate, procreate dreams, DaVinci resolve and debating whether to go for M4 1TB or refurbished M1 1TB and save a lot of money. I want 16Gb version for the more demanding apps and multi-tasking. Any advice?
Hi patrick. Im a relatively young student still in my middle school years. I am looking for an ipad as a mac is too heavy to carry around. My parents has a 1 grand budget which can either get an ipad air 13 or ipad pro 11. I cant decided whether to sacrifice the screen size for performance or performance for screen size as I am planning to use it up to my college years. In your opinion, is the m2 chip futureproof enough for schoolwork and gaming that it will last long enough for it to be reliable in my college years? Thanks!
@@karlosmiles3558 tough call. The iPad Air is crazy good value for money right now. And the iPad Pro is overpowered in my opinion. But yeah, it's two generations of chips, so if it's purely the future proofing, the M4 makes more sense.
I sent mine back Pat. I tried to like it but I just couldn’t get passed it’s clearly handicapped by its iOS. Yes in the future new software may make it better but Apple cannot simply keep upgrading the hardware with a bottleneck caused by what it can physically do….its pointless. I used it for a week and it was absolutely no different to my M2 and my M2 was no different to my M1 so in theory you could say that there is no distinct difference between the first and forth iteration of the M series iPad. It’s like having a Lamborghini you can only drive on your driveway!
You can work on a 2020 model and not notice much of a difference to be honest. I know some specific users like artists really benefit from some of the features but most of us won't notice much of a difference at all.
@@PatrickRambles yes, I can certainly see where graphic designers could benefit from the improvements in the pencil function but how much are you betting that these improvements could have been implemented on earlier M1 models with a simply software upgrade. The thing that frustrates me the most is that there is not really anything even close to as good as the iPad so there is no real incentive for Apple to truly improve anything beyond what they are doing but this WILL inevitably have to end as people are seeing it. It will be extremely interesting to see how the new software launch will effect how the M4 chips are separated from the earlier iterations as this is the only thing that would make the M4 make sense. I will keep my eyes peeled for your future takes on this and for now simply stick with my M3 11” Pro MacBook Pro. 💻 I’m done with iPads…..for now.
White. I have both colors now, the white one is the previous model but it's the same material. It gets a bit dirty eventually but no fingerprints or smudges visible.
👍👍video, Apple should just let the iPad Pro be the 2 in 1 most people want, utilize ipad os when used as tablet with option to use mac os when attached to magic keyboard as laptop, the magic keyboard should have minimum 2 usb-c thunderbolt ports & extra battery life
Got the Apple Magic keyboard case and looks so good sleek and expensive 😆 But surprisingly there’s one thing designer overlooked- a user friendly intuitive way of opening it haha especially when got used to opening a laptop. So this is the challenge they encountered bec iPad is not a laptop though it look like one when you got keyboard case installed. I open it like standing and open like V shape as I try to pry with fingers 😂 Very awkward and dangerous to sliding.
for me ipad will never replace a laptop ! what s the point of a screen attached to a keyboard ? for watching a movie or playing a game , ipad will work . other than that no . my opinion ! although am a big big fan of apple products !
@@PatrickRamblesI’m predicting/ guessing that will be the next iPad Pro -> M5 + improved camera’s, because I don’t see what they can do with the hardware beyond that at this point.
I think someone in another video claimed the filesapp workaround was another app at store they said it was everything they needed but I can’t find the video to see which one.
Good vid, yeah it’s still a glorified iPhone, but its biggest strength is portability and I can do all things with my iPad, really!!! I’ve got excel and do all my financials and planning with it. Plus, I can plan my life and activities with it also! The big stink is what? Only tubers have problems either it because they’re not talented enough to make it work. The rest of the world is fine with the iPad Air which I believe will get thinner too. iPads are computers with portability and the Geniuses of this world know how to make it work. Good luck guys! Btw, my M1 iPad Air is perfect enough for me.
I love my iPads, but this incompatibility between the accessories, is just a scam! If my 5 months old iPad Pro breaks down tomorrow, ill have to buy an apple pencil I don't need, and a Magic Keyboard I don't need, after trowing my current pencil and keyboard to the trash. Is a scam!
The thermal throttling when using high intensity programs is not acceptable. I am an artist and i spend 99% of my ipad time on Procreate with 5k canvases and up to 50 or so layers. Tied to that workload, the battery life is garbage compared to the M2 i had previously. IpadOS is a weak, glorified phone Os, somehow locked down further than the phones are. File transfers to PC is cumbersome at best - but there are are better 3rd party apps available (though i understand that shouldn't be the case.. The potential AI integrations (my thoughts on AI as an artist aside) is not worth the insane price hike of this new lineup. I'm just not impressed unless something gives.
Stop using that idiotic term if you don't like a product. I've been featuring Paperlike for years because I've been using and liking it for years. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
Who has the eyesight to see that screen with that keyboard position? How is anyone reading text from that distance and not getting headaches with the way the screen is angled? It also wobbles when you touch it or type. Even if it could run desktop software you couldn’t seriously use photoshop etc without connecting it to an external monitor thus nullifying the OLED screen. It seems an utterly crazy product, way overpriced and hopelessly too powerful for what it runs. Apple iPads are great but as Jobs first intended them.
Apple only add AI to M4 and do nothing significant to ipados. In a few years Apple release new OS so wait for new iPad that will gate-keep that new OS and don't buy the current ones imho.
