M4 Sherman Review/Guide, Best Derp Tank in the Game!

I review the M4 Sherman, a tier 5 American medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of tier 6 Sand River and Highway battles.
The M4 Sherman is the best derp tank for its tier that I've played, thanks to its synergistic combination of superb view range, ability to fight hull-down, and good-enough mobility.
I consider the M4 Sherman to be meaningfully better than the Pz IV H, and this is reflected in my stats - I deal ~100 more damage and ~50 more spotting damage in the M4 Sherman relative to the Pz IV H, along with ~0.4 more spots - and that was with a less-skilled crew.

HE penetration is high enough (53) to penetrate soft opponents frontally

Some of the other friendly players didn't understand what I was doing and why. It happens. I can't be bothered in the moment of a challenging carry to explain to them, but sometimes if we're winning I'll take the time to respond.

Another good derp tank that people rarely think of derp is the KV-13, Circonflex 3 marked his with the derp on it and worked out pretty well.

I three marked the m4 with derp gun and I did this by learning what targets I could reliably pen with the heat ammo. It has only around 100 pen with heat but there are a lot of tanks you can do 350 damage to in a shot compared to only doing 100 with high explosive. I used HE on all the light armor targets and on targets with thick armor. Heat ammo on most of the medium armor. I used to use 100% high explosive ammo and could only get two marks on the gun but then I started to load some heat ammo and got good at using that ammo. It can be tricky to use the heat ammo because of low penetration and it gets absorbed by tracks. But I got good with it and most medium tanks it sees can be penned with the heat ammo so you can really boost your average damage up doing that. I usually loaded only 10 heat round and the rest HE.

What are your thoughts on Sherman Jumbo with derp (and tough stock turret)?

I've been playing the Sherman jumbo with the derp and love it, part of the reason though is because the stock turret is much stronger than the upgraded turret. If you mount the upgraded turret you can have the top gun but can't have the same advantages as a ridgeline fighter than with the stock turret. I feel 'undergunned' at tier 8 though and definitely in a supporting role in those games. Once I hit 50 games with the derp I'm going to try the upgraded turret for 50 games. I'm going to get a crew back in the M4 though, I'm a better player now then when I originally grinded through it.

ThrashingMadPL I'd never expect to meet you here Thrash (subscribed to ur channel for "historia na szybko" ;). What's your IGN? If you need any help or advice I can provide you with that as an experienced and competent player. Regarding Jumbo: It's a heavy tank and it's as blind as as bat. If you enjoy mobile vehicles you may struggle to have fun with the jumbo. You can bully lower tiers and some tier 6 tonks with it but contributing as a bottom tier may be tough for an unexperienced player (you gotta plan ahead cause there is no running away and flexing around with this thing.)

I only play the Sherman Jumbo with the 105mm and stock turret. Got my 1st Mastery in the game with it. Be smart on where you're located in the matchup. Top tier? you can dominate. Middle tier? Play smart. You can still wreck tier VIIs. Bottom? Tier VIII will be a struggle. Be a support tank and keep derping them. Knock out those modules and crews and frustrate the enemy.

Jurek, it's more of a 'heavium' than a heavy, the P/W is a little better than the T-34-85M and terrain resistance is similar as well, the top speed is the bad news, at 35km/h it is really what makes it a heavy, but it does get up to that speed fast.

New subscriber here, and I'm having a great time going through all of your Road to Unicum videos, Taugrim. You do good work! I'm having fun with my M4 derp, and I originally bought it strictly on the many recommendations I've seen and read about it being so much fun. So I guess I'm the weird guy here because I do quite a bit better in my PzIVH. I get all the stat differences in the two that points to the M4 being the better tank, but it FEELS like there are some soft stats in the German Sherman that make it more comfortable for me. Thinking about it, I figure once I get crew training for the M4 on par with the PzIVH, I'll understand what everyone is talking about.

Do you use the R and F keys to move without increasing the bloom too badly on the derp?? i find that sometimes helps me get better snapshots off.

Not really (I re-mapped the keybindings to a custom setup), but I know some players use the lock turret feature to reduce bloom.

The "R-function" is really helpful when peaking or just slowly moving forward while aimed-in. It makes a huge difference over trying to drive forward gently with normal acceleration button.

thanks for replying. I just meant the cruise control forward and cruise control backwards (at less than 100%). I'm sorry, I don't really know the correct term, but those seem to help a lot with bloom. When you want to move forward, you can hit a key that is like cruise control. If you hit it once, it only moves forward slowly and your bloom doesn't get as big. Anyway, you might have already known what I was talking about, but i didn't explain it well. I just wanted to try and give a little something back since i get so much good stuff from your videos. Thanks and I appreciate all the work you put into your content!!!

Mojo THANK YOU for posting this question. I never really thought about doing that, and my answer would be of COURSE it would help with bloom as you are not "snatching" your tank forward and backward, but rather easing it.

I aced sherman jumbo few days ago with 16k wn8 :) stock turret and derp no prem ammo. jumbo crew will go in to the pershing and thinking about buying sherman at tier 5 with new crew. as i remember it wasnt hard grind to 6th sense. tnx for vid

Would you also run the derp on the M4A3E2? And would you keep the 1st turret with the awesome 152mm armor all around, or switch to the top one with 63mm all around but an extra 40m of view range?

Either the stock turret + derp gun (brawly), or the 76mm with the top turret. I'd probably go with the latter, as you can brawl, spot, and snipe.

The nice thing about having HE with 53mm of pen and 410 alpha is when you face tier 7 tanks, you don’t need to worry about bouncing shots and you’ll almost always do a decent amount of damage whereas with AP, APCR, and HEAT you will bounce a lot of shots against well armored higher tier tanks.

With 2+ skill crew M4A1 is very good. Without it it's a primary target. Good crew and premium consumable is seal clubbing.

Grinding with the Lee to unlock this tank is a massive learning curve for new players. Lee is a very bad tank but it teaches you to learn the maps and be patient. Once the Sherman is unlocked the game is so much fun. Be careful with the build...

All of the derp mediums have been nerfed in the past unfortunately. The best derp tank was the T40 pre-nerf. Same gun as the M4 but 1 tier lower and with 400m view range!

Wow that dispersion is horrendous: 0.53. Even fully aimed in your aim circle is larger than the enemy tanks when shooting at medium to long distance.

Hey Taugrim, could you do an artillery guide? I've been playing the GW Tiger to get the GW E-100 for clanwars, but really struggle to get my WN8 past the 2000 mark on the tank despite being the second highest rated player on the NA server (for this month, in GW Tiger.)

I have 5 battles on my account on arty for a WN8 of 12, and that isn't ever going to change. I think arty is terrible for the game and have no interest in contributing to a bad experience for people on the receiving end.

Personally, I prefer the Pz IV H. It's all about raw power, which helps in close-up brawls. I have under 1k WN8, but after mastering it, I'm pulling 1k+ damage games very consistently (almost every game, unless someone on the enemy team decides to suicide). I agree with the shortcomings that you mentioned, but having a reload of under 6.7 seconds on a derp gun...

QB showed a video late 2017 that showcased best monetized non-premium tanks. In at #1 was Pz IV H derp. At #7 was the M4. The derp Sherman make not make as many credits, but it is more fun to play. Best non-premium money maker was M44 arty.

If you run a derp, you should really bring a few HEAT shells. You could have ended that type 58 in 1 or 2 shots, but your HE duel went a pretty long time because he had just enough armor to resist. I respect your silver ammo creed like hell, but it's unreasonable to hamstring yourself by not having a few.

The Pz IV H has better gun handling, 1-sec faster reload, better acceleration, but I find the view range, top speed, smaller turret, better turret armor, and 2 extra degrees of gun depression of the M4 Sherman make the latter the better tank.

The worst thing about the M4 Sherman is that you have to use the M3 Lee before that.... And the best thing about the Lee is that you get to play the Sherman when the grind is done..

Tnx Taugrim, true that M4 is a great T4T tank. And Sand river is possibly the best map for it, I believe half my aces in M4 were on Sand river different battles. It works ridges like a boss. In one encounter tier 7 battle I went alone from east start to A line where I met a total of 5 tanks, and 2 more came along, and I won singlehandedly. Most of my team meanwhile got splattered in the middle or on dunes... Well in my favor the latter 2 were a Kv1-S and a Matilda that were of the armored type and I outvisioned them, but I took out first an E25 that was showing me his side for 2 or 3 shots (permatracked on first), then oneshot a Type 64, AMX 1375 and 2 low tiers, so some good higher tier tanks went down there for nothing. Ended with a Radleys as I came down on 2 arties later. What a derp carry...

If you've 3-marked any tank you're doing great with it. Stick with what works and you enjoy :) There are plenty of Unicums who favor the 152mm, although I personally find the 90mm more reliable.

... You haven't played the KV-2? You haven't lived. The M4 is really good. But it cannot oneshot higher tier TDs like the KV-2. It also doesn't have .6 accuracy like the KV-2 which as we all know makes it the most "accurate" Russian tank in the game.

A little too late. When you start to retreat enemies already advance to the bridge ( bridge between town and base) Usually at that time any good players from the field chase you down even they are lower tier than you. In this case type 58 is higher tier and better camo with same view range. Worst of the worst is some agile scouts from enemy scramble in the field and get spotted. I still believe your retreat is a little late.

Very hard tank to play, very not fun, you're constantly trying to find targets and keep yourself from getting shot at. Ugh. It's not a bad tank, but I can't learn to enjoy it. So much stress playing it.

KV-2 is the best troll tank in the game. The alpha of 910 for HE is simply nuts for its tier. That said, for the reasons Jurek mentioned, it seems limited to trolling.

HEAT = premium ammo. If you want to spam it, your profits take a big hit. KV-1S is also incapable of spotting like the M4 Sherman.

I love this tank... pure fun :D but one question what do you think are the best targets for the use of premium ammo on this derp gun?

Correct answer: probably no one. The pen on the HEAT is 102mm, so it would be reliable pen only against relatively weakly-armored targets. In which case I'd just rather use the HE, which causes a lot of module damage, especially to the tracks.

thx I have not had luck with that heat ever, so i thought i am doing something wrong but my theory of not bringing any with me seams fine than :D thx again :D

znacine Use HEAT only if you are certain you can penetrate the target and you have enough time to aim-in carefully. Just as Taugrim said, it's not recommended to use HEAT in most cases, especially if you aren't an experienced player or you rarely play lowbie tiers (you may have a tough time recalling armor values of the tanks).

Jurek Dekarski thx :) i don't like heat becouse a lot of time it dips just a bit in flight and hit something in the way like a gun or a track and i just waist credits trying to be smart :P

znacine Oh, that reminded me of one more thing: don't use it at long ranges, you need a well placed shot and there is a huge probability of hitting an outside module or spaced armor and dealing no dmg while sniping.

I think the 76mm would work much better for sniping, but the ability to 1-shot tanks is so much more fun. Plus, it's nice being able to damage and track anything with the same shell.

I don't think so, the Jumbo is strong when top tier because of it's good frontal armor, but is poor when bottom tier. Both of your gun choices are below average for a tier 6 medium, and you can't count on your armor to work against higher tiers that can punch straight through you. The Easy 8 gets the same guns as the Jumbo, but it has much more speed so it can get to flanking and ambush positions more quickly in a way you just can't in the Jumbo.

Depends on the game style in the end. I like something that can bounce a bit. But M4 was my favorite prior to the HE nerf

Comparing the two tanks on the Mobile variant of the game, the Pz IV has the better HE pen, 52mm as opposed to the M4’s measly 30mm of HE pen, making the Sherman worse in derpage stats

the Pz. IV H is a better derp tank imo. Also dont disregard the Renault G1 as it was the fastest shell velocity of all the T5 derps aswell as the best armor.

That view range at tier 5 is crazy, on bigger maps you can spot and fire concealed for days, plus extra mobility and gun depression make for a more comfortable play.

Sherman? Pz IV H? The real tier 5 derp king is Derp Wolverine. Look at its DPM and Gun Handling, and come back here.

Disagree. Wolverine is a sniper. The 76mm has superb DPM, good pen, and good accuracy. You can't snipe with an HE gun with any consistency.

Well that was half joking btw, but Wolverine is still a potential favorite for Tier V derp. Afterall, it has much better handling and DPM compared to M4. Same vision, much better camo. Almost identical mobility. Its only disadvantage is turret traverse and survivability (HP and some turret armor). I would trade much better gun and camo with some HP and armor, you shouldn't rush like a madman with derp gun afterall. Plus, Camo + Vision is much more useful in Tier V compared to other tiers. While 76 mm Wolverine is indeed much better than 76 mm M4, it's more the case of M4 had a terrible 76 mm. However, just because 76 mm of Wolverine is good doesn't mean that its derp gun is ineffective compared to its peers. Circon had a blast some time ago with Derp Wolverine, iirc. My friend also swapped 76 with derp some months ago and never switched it back. A decently mobile derp platform that has max VR and some decent camo actually is really capable to slay bottom tier, including stuffs like T67 that you could outspot + rekt by one shot.

Fair points, and you're right that the M4's 76 is limited by its DPM. Do you play your Derp Wolverine as more of a brawler, or do you find you can still snipe with it reasonably effectively?

It's more of a medium range support that could brawl or snipe depending of situation. Possibly use it as a slightly less aggresive M4 that use more bush instead of hills to control area (it still has -10 so it's not bad at all if you need some hill action). However, unless you're bottom tier it should be more aggressive in vision control which is why using optic with good crew is preferable. The aim time and turret bloom is actually good enough for sniping, and faster reload helps with permatrackking. Your only problem is the shell velocity, which is why Circon call it "Golfing" lol (same with M4 and Pz IV velocity tho). That said, one reason why it's a viable gun is that the gun has the usual derp gun fun factor, possibly the same reason people use T49 derp although 90 mm is more reliable.
