Surprisingly smooth repair. Only minor differences with the 2004 X3 w/3.0i. Electric fan rather than mechanical. Removal was plastic dowel on left side, #25 Torx on right side. Power steering pump only had two bolts, no hidden bolt. No secondary pump. Thank you Bimmer Zeit...!!!

Just finished mine on an E46. Pig of a job, getting the old gasket out was difficult as I didn't own any "picks". If you're gonna tackle this job, invest in a set before you start, will make life much simpler!!!

Great video, and very helpful. As mentioned earlier, the M54 in the E83 X3 is easier as there is an electric fan. Alternator was a breeze. After reconnecting the battery, the 4X4 light was on. A google search led to simply cranking the steering wheel lock to lock to make it go off. Definitely a good time to replace the serpentine belt and idler pulleys, as you mentioned.
@tonyquance3737

It's worth a mention that the bolts that hold the housing are different lengths, so you might want to take a piece of card, punch some holes in it same pattern as housing, and store the bolts in it so they don't get mixed up if you have to leave the job for a while, or someone else has to take over the work.

Just completed the job this weekend. Referred to the video several times. Very helpful, the job went off without a hitch, thank you. One thing I thought I would point out is that on the serpentine belt tensioner there is a way to hold it in the slack position. Use the 16 mm socket on the "nut" that is part of the tensioner casting to slacken the tension, insert a 6mm drill into the hole on the tensioner, then gently release. The pin holds the tensioner. I found this very useful as I could replace the belt without struggling - when I was ready I applied torque to the "nut" and removed the drill bit.

Excellent video, very clear footage presentation and directions on a difficult job. I just replaced my belts and thermostat and it looks like this oil leak I noticed is the oil filter canister. So off goes everything again, (plus this time the alternator, power steering pump, resevoir, etc.) all to replace a damn gasket!! Makes you wonder why BMW did't have a simple spin on filter! Thanks for the tips and making it look smooth!

Another awesome vid. Praise. I now fully appreciate how lucky I am that the dealership did this job on my X3 shortly before I bought it. : ) Even if I don't have to do the specific job it's still good for me to watch your videos - it is helpful to observe a calm and not-confused DIYer - in contrast to my own style. But seriously, very educational - thanks.

I would definitely replace it. It's really cheap, and it is also a source of oil leaking as the rubber breaks down. BMW procedure recommends replacing it along with the OFHG job. While you're in there, what's another $20 or so anyway?

No, the threads are opposite to the normal on the fan clutch. This is because of the direction the engine accessories run, so it tightens as the car is running. So threads are reversed.

Thanks for the step by step video. I think I have the same issue with my 2005 X5. The service tech said he wasn't sure if the oil pan is leaking as well. He suggested to start with the "oil filter housing" first, then clean it up to see if there is any other leaking. The cost will be $598. To do the Oil pan job, he said that will be $1750.00 ouch!! Keeping my fingers cross that its only the oil filter housing gasket that is leaking oil.
@BIMMERZEITT
@BIMMERZEITT 7 лет назад
Yes I would agree with your tech, the oil filter housing gasket should be your first step. It is easier and more cost effective to do this first, and it will definitely reduce your oil loss due to the leak. Every M54 engine needs the OFHG replaced after so many miles. The oil pan gasket is also likely leaking which is common. This sounds bad- but depending on how bad your oil pan leak is - it may make sense to just top it up with oil every few thousand miles and let it leak. $598 is an excellent quote for the OFHG job. It is usually around $850+ here in Connecticut. While your mechanic is in there, see how your drive belts are and cooling system such as the thermostat, water pump and radiator hoses.
@APPBURY
@APPBURY 7 лет назад
I had the expansion tank replaced in Feb. 2016 and all the hoses connected to it were replaced. I will mention the other items to the tech as well. thanks, btw I have 135,000 miles on the x5.

Thanks for this video. I followed it to the letter and stopped the leak. I do have a question though. After I put everything back and test drove the car, I got 3 ses codes (p0014, p0491 and p0492). I checked all the plugs and everything is the way it was before. Is this something you've heard that can happen?
@BIMMERZEITT
@BIMMERZEITT 6 лет назад
Thanks Ron. If you didn't have the codes before it's probably related to your work. I would recommend going back in for a check of your work, the connections are tight on the sensors and anything you moved out of the way. The intake boots etc were not torn (did you replace with old high mileage or new) - its easy to tear an old boot with mileage on it, brittle rubber. Of course these codes could be unrelated to the job, you know BMW's, it can happen. But just double check your work again when you're fresh. It's a long job and anyone can make a mistake that can trigger codes on a job like this.
