The Maasai traditionally live in houses made from a form of wattle and daub, completely covered with dung from their herds of cattle.
Although traditions are rapidly changing, we found in a remote corner of the Maasai Mara one family who still live a completely traditional way of life. The house is divided into compartments and each has a special purpose, one for calves, one for lambs, one for kids and one for their own children. All focusses on a single hearth which the woman of the house will keep tended.

I wonder how these houses perform insulation wise? is it cool inside?
@kim1570
@kim1570 2 месяца назад
Yes, those homes are perfectly adapted to the climate there. Cool in the hot season and warm when its cold outside. The foliage the women were covering with mud is one of the best natural insulators that many people in the western world who are building off-grid homes are using similar methods. Keep in mind that the west experiences harsh winters, so this type of building in Kenya which has some of the best climates globally, keeps the interior of such huts cozy year round.

@@NomadArchitecture Yeah, the selfish rich have done it to all of us Westerners too in the past. Who can still afford to own land? A small house if you're lucky but land for agriculture and animals? When l see those kind of foundation, l wonder how long it can last. Is there all-year dry climate, that those woods below ground level don't rot away without burning them a bit in fire? Or is it a temporary structure?
@brunetyannick1174

Some wood handle high humidity pretty well. Might be the case here, though it is kinda doubtful. Maybe these houses aren't made to last very long

Very interesting! 😊👍👍👍 Impressing way to create stability and flexibility. The roof is connected to the walls in a way, that let's the water rinse of. I wonder if the roof stays water proof. In Europe only way is either layers of birch bark plus sods or shingles of larch or straw roof. I see, the bark is not removed. That would lead to troubles in our area. The clay is not mixed with smaller fiber to avoid cracks? 🤔
@Forest_ash
@Forest_ash 2 месяца назад
The reason they use the animal poop is because it already has the straw content that one would have to manually mix in to a normal cob or adobe mixture. When it dries, there isn't a smell. It's pretty smart when you realize they are skipping another gathering and mixing phase just by using that as a building material.

ive watched other massai videos and found out that men doesnt do any house chores,they are in charge with their animals 24/7 but they are just most of the time sitting watching the animals eat..and women do all the works from building their home to cleaning,cooking,fetching water,firewood,washing clothes, milking the animals and of course taking care of the children and as a woman it feels so unfair and so exhausting but thats their way.they marry more than one for the reason that the more wives they have the easier chores will be coz they will help each other.seems reasonable but odd for most of us who are used to just one spouse

This is an honest question--why is dung used at all? Specifically, what properties does it provide so that it makes it worth using. I might be missing something but it feels like plain old clay/dirt would work just as well.
@MyraMew
@MyraMew 2 месяца назад
It's plentiful due to their farm animals, and much easier and faster to gather compared to only digging for clay and dirt, the digested plant matter in the dung might also give it more integrity when it dries. Those are my assumptions
