Maasai Jumping Contest. On Zanzibar we made friends with several people from the Maasai or Masai tribe that were from mainland Tanzinia, by Mount Kilimanjaro. One evening they showed us how they do a high jumping contest or game. My friends nickname is Mr. Giraffe. Now I know why! Not only is he long and slanky, yet muscular, but he can jump very high! They jumped over a rope that was about 2 meters high! Maasai warriors do a vertical jump, spinning sideways and lifting thir legs very high as well.
The boys got to jump too. The high jump was hard. But later they switched to the long jump. There the Maasai also jump and do a quart spin in the air to land sideways. Actually taking away some length in their jump. The longest was 3.5 meters. There the boys kept up with the Maasai jumping kings! Lates the Maasai started a sort of special wrestling match. It was a lot of fun, as always, with the Maasai! Hakunah matata!
