Maasai Shoe making tutorial Kenya Africa

During my Safari trip to both Kenya and Tanzania we stopped into a local Maasasi Village where people were still making walking shoes out of used TKC80 motorcycle tires. The men spoke in Kiswahili the entire time so I was not very engaged in the conversation (all the more reason for me to learn) but I had an incredible time. Its amazing what can be created with simple tools and a great deal of imagination. My shoes fit perfectly and because of the material may last a few lifetimes. P.S please excuse the dry ashy feet lol!
This video was shot at the Maasai Simba Camp located near the ambroseli ecosystem in Kenya.

That guy is amazing! Tires are very difficult to cut, and yet with that knife that he kept sharpening, he went through it like butter and the way he hit the nails through with that small hammer was a real artistic method. Id be happy to buy sandals like this from a guy like that! I have seen other people in other parts of the world who also use their feet as extra hands and we westerners are really pampered and imagine what we all could do if we had 4 hands!

I actually teach foreigners who come to Zimbabwe how to make the sandals. The tutorial takes about 2 hours. However the ones I make i add some soles to make them more comfortable and also add some beads for design and i wear them myself. I just cannot get enough of these videos. Thank you so much.

Part of the conversation is how one of the guy talking is that once a lioness with her cubs charged at him in Serengeti...he therefore advises his mate on how to kill a charging lion....the conversation changes to herbal medicine made from plants mixed with animal fat.

What would be the US equivalent of a knife like that??? I've never had a knife that sharp/effective on rubber- didn't know it was possible. I've got to find a similar blade - what a tool!
@nick_steele9790
@nick_steele9790 Год назад
@@sheri4673 I think it might just be a sharpened hacksaw blade. The key is that it has a very thin profile and an incredibly low angle for the edge. This makes it incredibly sharp but at the cost of durability. That’s why he’s constantly sharpening it
@sheri4673
@sheri4673 Год назад

Daring Danielle haha, yes. You should check out the young men in the south that wet to cc camp. It was a goverment program designed to provide young men a job clearing land to build roads. It's a missing part of history that needs some light shined on it. They walked state to state lived in tents did it with horses and mules. What I always wondered is how they got a surgeon out in the middle of the woods to put a plate in his head before ww2. They had there last reunion in Moundsville alabama about 30 years ago. They have all passed on now.
