*Recorded this a whiiiile ago on a dinky little cam in the South African countryside, so the quality leaves much to be desired. BUT, you all seem to love it, which makes my little heart buzz, so I'll keep it up for you to enjoy. Thanks so much for all the love!*
A monologue from Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband", in which the rather vociferous Mabel Chiltern recounts her struggles with a young man who seems intent on proposing in the most understated of ways - three times a day.
Did this one with a British Hyperlect because...well, it's Mabel Chiltern.

this is done so well! I'm performing this monologue for an audition in a few weeks and I didn't know how some of the words should be pronounced with the accent so this is very helpful, thanks for uploading!

Amy this is quite good! In general I valued how your objective in the scene seemed clear filled with varying tactic shifts -- inducements and threatening tactics that were rooted in the "other". The stakes seemed relatively high which I sensed was urging the scene on forward. Your pacing in general was good. I also think that you have a nice command of the humor found within the scene -- which I believe has a lot to do with playing the opposites of what you are saying. My only suggestions are technical. If you were to submit this to a casting director or agent they would most likely want to see your face and eyes a little more clearly. The lighting in your self tape was too dark and we as the audience couldn't enjoy ALL the nuances that were going on within your eyes and face. Don't short change yourself with such dim lighting. Try to get some lamps and such and add some diffusion to the lamps OR use natural lighting by filming in front of the window -- your face facing the window as the camera faces away from the window. The second suggestion is your framing, be careful with allowing too much air space above your head. The top of the frame should either touch the top of your head or leave a little bit of room. The third suggestion, with monologues typically casting directors prefer you deliver your lines to point off the sides of the camera and not directly at the camera -- unless the material really called for that type of shot. My favorite moments were those moments that we see you switching back forth from tactics that are inducing to threatening. There was a ton of variety and dimensions to the scene. You definitely have a great handle of the sense of style of the piece. Great work!

MABEL CHILTERN: Well, Tommy has proposed to me again. Tommy really does nothing but propose to me. He proposed to me last night in the music-room, when I was quite unprotected, as there was an elaborate trio going on. I didn't dare to make the smallest repartee, I need hardly tell you. If I had, it would have stopped the music at once. Musical people are so absurdly unreasonable. They always want one to be perfectly dumb at the very moment when one is longing to be absolutely deaf. Then he proposed to me in broad daylight this morning, in front of that dreadful statue of Achilles. Really, the things that go on in front of that work of art are quite appalling. The police should interfere. At luncheon I saw by the glare in his eye that he was going to propose again, and I just managed to check him in time by assuring him that I was a bimetallist. Fortunately I don't know what bimetallism means. And I don't believe anybody else does either. But the observation crushed Tommy for ten minutes. He looked quite shocked. And then Tommy is so annoying in the way he proposes. If he proposed at the top of his voice, I should not mind so much. That might produce some effect on the public. But he does it in a horrid confidential way. When Tommy wants to be romantic he talks to one just like a doctor. I am very fond of Tommy, but his methods of proposing are quite out of date. I wish, Gertrude, you would speak to him, and tell him that once a week is quite often enough to propose to any one, and that it should always be done in a manner that attracts some attention

Hey! That was brilliant, I would like to ask you an advice. I have a recall for a drama school and they request a Classical monologue. Do you think I can use this one? Thank you! You were amazing.

Yes! I could definitely be wrong, but I think of this as a classic - or at the very least inspired by the classics :)

Hope the vid helped at least a little! When I did it I just thought about having fun - don't worry about the accent, above all Mabel is just wildly enjoying her little gossip sesh about how wonderful she is and how this man just adores her ;) so just enjoy yourself - if you enjoy it, everyone watching will enjoy it too! break a leg xxx

@AmyLetcher

Hey! No prob, you could try modernizing it - set it in a high school in the present day, and just pretend Mabel is the stereotypical popular snobby girl. Is your normal accent American? If so, think Mean Girls, could be quite a fun spin on this classic!

Have fun with it! The more fun you have, the more your audience will enjoy it. Especially if you don't feel super confident with the accent (which maybe you do! but juuuust in case you don't), don't focus on the accent so much as the character's objective, and have fun with it :)
