Mabelle & The Carter Sisters,Doc and Carl are on this show,Doc is Mabelle's brother and is credited with teaching her to play;To Much advertising but it lets us hear June telling us the virtues of a farming magazine, Lilly
Best thing I've listened to in a long time! Great to hear Doc and Carl pick and sing, along with Mama Maybelle's solo and those young Carter gals singing some of their sweet harmony on "Give Me The Roses While I Live". Always a treat for me to hear my fave sister, Helen, squeezin that old accordion. Wonderful piece of radio history here. Thank you so much Lilly! You have an amazing collection. FIVE STARS
True, Doc is Hugh Addington Maybelle's brother but he was her youngest brother and didn't teach Maybelle how to play. Maybelles mother played the banjo and Maybelle learned the banjo first and even won a banjo contest at Cripple Creek Virginia, when she was 9 years old. She transferred her banjo picking to her guitar picking which came to be known as the "Carter Scratch" Look for the book I've been writing going on 8 years about the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle band Era 1943-1956
This recording is from May of 1946, Doc or "Hugh" Addington Maybelle's younger brother and the Virginia Boys did not join Maybelle and her daughters at WRNL until after September of 1945. Doc had been released from the military in September of 1945 and I have found a Q/A article in the Richmond times in 1946 regarding when they joined the "Girls". The dates given on the recording like Sunday, June 2nd are from 1946. Read more about the Maybelle and her daughters in the book that I have been working on about the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle band era (1943-mid 50's)
Just because it wasn't released until 1945 doesn't mean they couldn't have played it earlier and in fact almost artists perform songs for a long time before they record them.
@@tonylupo1764 How would they have known the songs? By hearing them after they were released. They were covering other artists popular material, not unknown material.
@@troymcclure4971 You make a great point, as I thought you were talking about when Doc and Carl released it, but I don't think they ever did record it on a label. And I have heard from a real good source that these WRNL shows with the Carter sisters and Doc and Carl were recorded in 1946
