VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a LAN network that is virtually created in a switch. Standard switches usually forward traffic from one port to all other ports when traffic with the same broadcast domain passes through that port.
For Manageable Switch devices, they are able to create several different LANs with different IDs on each port, and will only forward traffic to ports that have the same id.
This special type of switch actually automatically installs a VLAN in it (VLAN ID = 1) which consists of all existing ports.
The MAC Based VLAN method works to provide membership according to the MAC address that each device has on the network. By applying the MAC Based VLAN method, clients can more freely connect via any port on our network. And we as network admins don't have to bother changing the VLAN ID configuration that is applied to the client.
