It was actually his guitar and amp that would distort, that old teisco has a pickup that roars with a tube amp

Any single coil will sound like that pretty much with a twin reverb. I do the same with my twin and a mustang, just plug into the vibrato channel crank it super high and then slowly raise the master volume

It's a dangerous thing to do as it damages your guitar, but it's a surf classic Strum a chord or play a note, then push the body into your body with your right hand, and use your left hand to push the neck forward. Lightly please

Although I agree, it does help to use tabs at first. Especially since they're usually wrong, so it forces you to fill in the blanks. I used tabs and Marty Schwartz videos for like two/three years, and I've been learning everything by ear for the last six. Just saying.
