I have been a windows user since 2004, when I was in university. I once tried macs, but I could not Get used to it and I switched back. I think it depends on what you are familiar with and what suits your needs. Windows offers many choices and customization options, which I like. Macs have a more closed ecosystem, which is one of the reasons I don't use them. For example, windows allow me to use different hardware and software combinations, while macs are more restricted and expensive.

M1 and M2 chips are amazing if you do computationally demanding computing like graphics and video, plus software companies don't need to design with all the possible hardware variables that come with windows. This lets them really rev up the performance on Mac, but with day to day stuff, Windows lower cost and decent performance is the winner. So if you make media, go Mac. If you don't Windows is fine and hey, Android phones also do everything an iPhone does for way less money and your not trapped in the Apple world of expensive accessories and online services either. This review should have also considered that aspect in the which is better decision.

@dirtyharry1881 On Samsung phones in settings you will find option "Link to windows" under connected devices. Also, this is inbuilt on all windows OS now. You can search and open link to windows on your windows laptop and it gives a QR code to add your phone (Samsung or Google). If you point your Phone camera to QR code, it takes you to enable the option to "link to windows". Once connected, you will get all notifications on windows laptop and you can choose which you want and which you don't. You can also access your phone interface and any app on your phone from windwos laptop. Also, you can sync your contacts if you want and enable instant hotspot on your phone. So, when you are outside and open laptop, you laptop will connect to your phones hotspot without you doing anything. It is very seamless and you will enjoy the experience. There is no Dex here. Working on both a MacBook Pro 16", a HP/Windows 13" laptop and Windows gaming PC I don't have to switch between getting used to the CMD and CTRL keys because of the many keyboards that support both and have a physical switch on them to switch between macOS, Windows or even Linux keyboard layout.

Something I really like with the trackpads on Windows - at least Surface trackpads (as far as I know) is that they are COMPLETELY customisable. On Mac you certainly have some control, but on Windows, you can make any three or four-finger gesture on a trackpad do ANYTHING - including ANY custom keyboard shortcut. I personally use ones below: Three fingers: - Tap: ALT + TAB (quickly switch between the last two apps) - Swipe up: Windows + S (Search) - Swipe down: Windows key (instant Windows menu shortcut - faster than pressing the windows key on a keyboard) - Swipe left: Win + A: (opens Action Centre) - Swipe right: "Switch apps" (shows and lets you swipe through all open windows) Four fingers: - Tap: ALT + F4 (closes apps) - Swipe up: Win + E (opens File Explorer) - Swipe down: "Backward navigation" (goes back in FE, web browser, many apps...) - Swipe left: "Minimise a window" - Swipe right: "Maximise a window" I find these shortcuts SUPER helpful!

The mice, KB's, headsets and Studio desktops connect seamlessly with the Surface Tabs and laptops. Granted MS don't have a watch or phone (It's a crying shame that MS didn't/couldn't make the Windows Phone work) but as you say, Android phones work well as do Google and Samsung watches. I use Windows and recently Linux on my desktop and I have a Macbook Pro laptop. The one major thing that really kills me with the Mac is multi-window of a single application. With Windows, I can just hover over the icon in the taskbar and choose the window I want to bring up. On the Mac, I have to either Cmd+Tab through all of my open apps or open one window of the app, go up to the window menu, and choose the one I'm looking for from a text list, which is definitely not ideal. I do like both experiences overall though.

One of the more unbiased reviews I've come across. When it comes down to getting work done in the quickest and easiest way, hands down, Windows is the clear winner. Between window snapping, peek preview of apps from the taskbar, clipboard history, ease of use on OneDrive across different PCs, I feel Windows just does things the way you want. There are way more things like assigning different sound output devices to different apps, tabs in file explorer, task manager on Windows 11, power toys, etc. that just gives way more control to the user. One of the biggest draws on the Apple side of things is their ecosystem. Once you're in, you're in. And credit where credit's due, it works really well. When it comes to longevity, I feel like if you get a well-built Windows device, like a Surface, it will last you a real long time. I've had mine for about 4 years and the quality still feels like it did on day 1, even the Alcantara keyboard.
@craigsketo

I'd argue you can do all of the above on a mac as well with a few additional apps, and as for longevity I've literally just got rid of my old 2007 iMac and 2008 original unibody MacBook for a MacBook air M1 and a mac mini M2, I've had loads of macs over the years (I'm old) and have kept them always for a minimum of 6 years. I used to be massively pro windows and have literally used every variant of Windows starting at Windows 3.1 and going all the way up to the latest but I just prefer the way OSX works, feels more intuitive but I think all these things are just subjective and you should just use what you like best, I run 11 web servers for my job and all of those run Linux and I wouldn't choose anything else to do that job due to the stability, I have servers that haven't been rebooted for over 2 years, our old windows servers were rebooted every few days, Horses for courses as the saying goes ...

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about in closing a window in macOS. For every application Ctrl-Q for "Quit" is the way to go. If you must click on the red dot in the upper right of the window - that will close that app window and if it's the only window open for that app, the app is suspended - very little resources are used from that point on. I use Windows in my work life as an IT support person and Mac's in my personal life, I made the switch to macOS long ago. Nice video and good conversation

you really should do it, especially with how cheap the prices on their stuff is right now. I got a 2020 M1 MacBook Air with 16gb ram + 512gb storage for $450.The only reason I bought one is because, yesterday, my cats broke my 2015 MacBook Pro that I've been using nonstop every day since 2015. I"ve been using Mac my entire life and it's made everything so much easier for me. And as I got into music production and programming, Mac just makes everything related to most professional work so much easier. It's not about having the most cutting edge hardware of whatever, most people literally cannot afford to buy the highest spec stuff. What's great about Macs is that they start out really expensive because they are such high quality products with such a smooth and pleasant user experience at every level of the product and the machine itself that people are willing to pay big bucks for them at release. But then because Macs are such durable machines with such good performance even after years of use and abuse, they are still great computers that will rarely break down on you or cause you endless headaches with driver updates and bloated OS or unknown incompatibilities between things the way that Windows always does. The overall experience is just more pleasant, peaceful and enjoyable. And then when you actually need to get work done, then you know that it's always gonna work and be no-nonsense for you

Nice and fair comparison/review. However, when it comes to the longevity , a more fair comparison would be to compare MacBooks with ThinkPads (the X or T series) - I'm still using, on a daily basis, X220 (from/2012) and the other one from 2008 (X200) still runs (but it's slow). I've used a few MacBooks (Pro/Air), a MacMini and an iMac, and a few Thinkpads (X200, 220, and currently using a T480) and I find the ThinkPads being much more reliable (hardware reliability) than MacBooks. When it comes to MacOS vs. Windows.... it's a personal preference. I've always had problems with MacOS when connected to external non-Apple monitors, controlling sound, etc. so I prefer Windows since it has always worked (in my case) with all the pheripherials I've used quite smoothly.

Good (and objective and fair) review. The two companies have very different strategies. Windows commitment to backwards compatibility and platform agnosticism is great-ish. But it is a HUGE overhead and barrier for their software teams (and the recent imposition of hardware restrictions on Windows 11 capable platforms attests to that). Apple's closed ecosystem gives them a much easier way to ensure a consistent user experience, but at a huge cost to the end user (both in price and options). The fact that apple has pushed 3 or 4 proprietary hardware interfaces over the years, in complete disregard for the investment people (and companies making devices that plug into these interfaces) have made in devices that use that interface (all of which become unusable when the next years product comes out) has turned me off Apple. It remains to be seen how well Apple plays in the USB-C arena. I use Windows and Linux on my computers. I use an iPhone (I did use a Windows phone for a few years and had great hopes for it's future .... sigh). At the end of the day I would say both do their jobs well. Apple has better marketing, packaging, and hype. Windows has been more accessible. Apple feels more evil.

The Windows registry mess is a well-known issue. It means that every few years, formatting and reinstalling Windows is needed to bring back the lost performance if you care about it. Of course, it can be fixed by cleaning up registry manually or via software, but I've heard about people making mistakes and needing a new install of Windows anyway, so it's an option for a small percentage of users.

I'm a desk top kind of guy, so the laptops make no difference to me, but having been a Windows user all my life, because of W11 not being compatible with my quite expensive and still very powerful Windows PC, I decided that I would just sell it, and jump over to a Mac Mini, it has less power, but seems to work just as fast for most things, and apart from the keyboard layout @ and " being swapped around, and the control keys being different, I have found most things pretty easy to get along with. I love the trackpad, but still use a mouse as well. My one real annoyance is if I am on a website and want to post an image, the folder only shows very small icons, which makes it hard to find the image I want to share, especially if I am in a folder with many similar images. I can change the size of the thumbnails on the computer itself in folder view, but not when opened through adding a picture, say on FB. It drives me crazy. This is a very good comparison. I mean, really good. I had an opportunity to try mac and windows, and yeah - there are pros and cons for each OS. Just as you said - Win is more flexible than macOS, but the macOs has this dead simplicity and better accessibility in its core - for example the setting option in Win: "Increase font size", in mac : "Make text bigger". Also, I got to admit, that transition to Apple Silicon chips was great and flawless. New stuff works as intended, old stuff uses very well tuned QEMU (branded as Rosetta2) and it just work. On the other hand, I would not say, that macOs is more stabile than windows. I think, that they are now "on par", I experienced some crashes on mac as well. Plus for us programmers - its kinda tempting to use Mac for their unix insides, but honestly -this can also backfire pretty well :) (you use different implementation of standard utilities like sed, so there are differences which you need to be aware of) - today the Win with WSL seems actually like a much better choice.

I spend much more time on windows, but have a mac too and using it too. There are many things very annoying about the mac which does not seem make sense to me and annoys me a lot. I just cannot get used to the Finder for example unfortunately. Seems their choices many times more about being different over being useful. Like on a selected file enter opens the file on every OS except on mac it goes to rename but question: How often want to rename versus open a file? So it would make sense to have the easier more obvious option for the more often used operation right? I wanted to quickly write down something on the mac the other day so i used notes and while i was using it editing the text it jumped in scrolling up and down like a mad dog so i googled it what's wrong and I found a thread saying it is like this for many years nobody fix anything. So one assume with a mac you get a very stable working less customizable platform but I am not sure about the stability anymore. I always feel the mac os is an abandoned child. It has a lot opportunities but besides integrating the iOS cooperation more and more they don't develop much about it. The dock is still half as intuitive as on windows doesn't even pop up a peaking window about the app you hover the mouse over... the copy panel still doesn't show the actual speed of transferring. weird. I am sure there are many many annoying things about windows but they at least seem trying. Since windows 10 for me there was not much glitch or serious issues about it. But of course my first os was windows and that matters a lot for sure. I have mac because I use logic, native apple app on a native appropriate hardware designed along with the their own OS and have a lot hiccups. Always happens something after waking up from sleep. Cannot set in the computer to NOT give voltage to the external usb audio interface when sleeping ,so I have to unplug it all the time when I stop working, I don't want to keep it plugged in to the charger all the time it kills the battery they say, so then I use again after opening the lid waking up the computer it says the audio interface was changed and seem ok then when I hit space for paying the audio it pauses and thinking again to apply the audio again for 10 sec... so annoying. Also mac kind of force you to update the system so you do it and then it turns out your midi controller or anything doesn't have the driver for the new system yet so you are F d so I think that old testiment or myth that with a mac everything is seamless and with a windows your life is just hard doesn't seem to be true maybe it never was.

I've used both. (I'm currently running macOS.) I've been using Windows up until late 2009 (Windows 7.) Though i started out with Windows XP. I had some little experiences with MS DOS & win 98, but i was really but a little kid at that moment, i think about 9yrs. old. I was around 15yrs. old when i bought my first computer. A Windows XP HP desktop. Man was i proud! When that first one failed in just one year. I started to look at websites and early RU-vid for building my own computers. Choosing my own parts was so cool! I really loved (and still love) doing that! In 2009 i was diagnosed with leukemia and i needed to stay in the hospital for a long time. So i wanted a good laptop. For me, the choice was obvious: I wanted a Macbook Pro. The thing is that back at that time, Windows laptops really weren't that reliable! Mostly because of battery or hdd/ssd fails. I never heard so many "horror stories" on the mac side when it came to that. And i can actually completely relate. I had my Macbook Pro 2009 up until the new Macbook Pro retina was introduced in 2012. Anyway, i'm a Mac user since 2009 and i never looked back. My mom used a Windows laptop, first with Win 8 and then she had a free upgrade to Win 10. I hated Win8! She always asked me for help with stuff like importing photo's etc... and i remember hating the interface so much man! But i guess that's personal. That Win10 upgrade looked much more like Win7 for me and i guess that's what i was used to the most. In the end, i think it's just that: Everyone starts with one and mostly liking that one best. But, that's not always true, like in my case! 😅 It really depends from person to person and what you like (or need) in a computer/OS. I use my computer mostly "creatively." I love the ease of use that a Mac has. Like connecting with my iPhone, Apple Watch, etc... I use logic pro x & final cut pro for music & video editing. It works for me... 🤷🏻‍♂

A blog post on how to compare computers I had a Dell XPS laptop that was more reliable than my MacBook Pro. I owned a MacBook Air also stopped working after 4 years. Apple makes great products that often last long, but there are also many Windows laptops that are well made and durable. And if you want to build your own Windows desktop, you have so many choices and options from $1,000 machines to $10,000+ machines that are often stunning and powerful. I currently use a custom-built PC desktop, with the latest RTX graphic card (4080), and latest gen AMD cpu. I also have a well-built Legion Pro 7 laptop, and I use iPad Pro M1 as my "apple computer." I think nowadays, its partly preference, and partly use case, and partly I am locked into this ecosystem case. :) I could easily switch back to a MacBook Pro if I want or need to, but I don't think I'd give up my custom-built Windows machine, I'll just keep upgrading and tweaking.

Windows is just a Productivity superpower, there are a lot of Great thing that could elevate your productivity into super level, windows is great for amateurs and pro alike going back to Mac is like going back into the caveman period, they did a lot of bonehead things there, it just a very frustrating experience with Mac. don't get me wrong, it's good for Grandpa and 5yo, they limit the functionality to the max so even an idiot couldn't do anything wrong with it. but if you're neither of that demographic, then Mac will felt very limiting, you paid a $2500 for something that was limited, you can't game on it, you can't use it for heavy CAD and 3D rendering apps, there always something you can't do with it

The one thing that amazes me is that if you compile out the exact same app between CISC vs. RISC base systems the RISC base systems resultant app file size is always smaller. I would think it would be the opposite. One thing that is really amazing is Rosetta on the mac gives you the benefits of having both Windows and Mac on one machine. MS sees the writing on the wall with laptops with their first toe step with Windows Arm OS version.

Having a huge selection of Windows laptops to choose from is definitely a plus but you don't really feel the downsides of Apple's complete lack of choices because the 2 laptops they do make, they're excellent in pretty much every regard nowadays. However, it's still Windows for me for its far superior business/enterprise and finance application landscape as that's my line of work. Even though I was previously inclined towards getting a MacBook, I had to scrap that plan.

PC Gaming has a hold on me sadly. I am grateful tho that at least the iPhone works decently on a PC now. (Intel Unison and Phone Link) Although, I may replace my PC laptop for a M Chip Macbook Air if MS hasn't delivered on ARM by 2026.

I only recently fully switched to Mac this year. I’ve had a few iPhones in the past, and didn’t like how I was not able to fully customize everything down to the pixel like how I would on my Android. But there was always this glaring fact that, the iPhone never once let me down. It’s reliable. The only android phones I had that can even compare are the galaxy phones, but even then, after the 2nd year, they start to slow down. My last android phone was the Note 10+ and that will always be my favorite phone ever. It’s so gorgeous and I love the “boxy” look. I miss the S-Pen everyday.. but that phone takes like several minutes just to turn on.. and is constantly lagging. Compared to my old iPhone 8 with a cracked screen that turns on less than 30 seconds… and I have never had any issues with it. The lagging is was the main thing that pushed me towards apple. I got the new iPhone 14+(or pro, whatever tf they call it lol), I knew what I was getting, some brick with extremely limited features and customization, but at the end of the day, I kinda really don’t care about that anymore lol. I’ve had it for about a year and only once did I need to restart it because it was acting buggy and slow, vs doing it at least once a day with my Galaxy Note 10... Then I got the air pods, which are seamless when connecting w my other Apple devices, and I got an iPad Pro w the Apple Pencil. I had a galaxy tab 7+ and just like the Note 10+ that started lagging and being buggy after a year. Apple Pencil is flawless. And the tip is durable vs the squishy tip on the S-pen that comes with Galaxy Tab 7+. Then I got the Apple Watch, and full disclosure, both the galaxy watch (I had one) and Apple Watch are kinda equal but the Galaxy Watch by far excels with monitoring your sleep. And then I got a MacBook Pro and… it’s like being on drugs or something lol.. it’s just so simple. RELIABLE. And the apps optimized for macs run too smoothly… vs w my windows laptop where I have to take 20 million extra steps to divert all my CPU to rendering a preview of a video lol… they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Macs are super reliable, and the ecosystem with the watch and the iPhone and iPad and the AirPods is pure perfection. Even when the Galaxy buds came out initially, it was one too many steps to switch to another device, which I wouldn’t have thought until after I switched to apple. I totally get the appeal of windows and yes in hindsight, it’s better. But only if you know what you’re doing. Like if you have experience building PCs and know all the ins and outs vs If your just a normie who isn’t trying to build a skynet pc to run Skyrim on 12k 600fps with ray tracing, then apple is goat. I love both and use them both equally everyday. I kinda treat my MacBook more like my wife, and my PC like the mistress lol 😅

There's a couple major Operating Systems out there such as AndroidOS, iOS, WindowsOS, and Linux Distro. And they come in different flavours or device form-factors. Android: best experienced on phones. iOS: best experienced on tablets. Windows: best experienced on laptops. Linux: best experienced on desktops. So that's one tactic you can take to have access to all the Applications you may need. If you try any other variation of the above, you're gonna have a bad time, eg/ Windows Phone, Linux Tablet, Android/Chromebook Laptop, iOS Desktop/Mac Pro.

You don't quit applications by clicking the X on Mac... you Command + Q them. It's very easy. Command + Tab scrolls through your apps, and Command + Q closes them. You can do it in a split second, much faster than clicking around.

I found one of the most honest opinion in this review. I use both OS and both of them have + - 's. Apple ecosystem is one thing which I love most about it. Windows PCs' are more customisable from software to hardware where Apple is very very limited. And most of the professional relies on Windows and the way MS Azure is spreading everywhere Windows will capture larger market share in next few years.

Interesting video! I've got the best of both worlds, a 16" M1 Pro MacBook, and a fully kitted out gaming desktop PC. I'd rather use my Mac for 99% of things, so web browsing, video editing, programming, Microsoft Office (ironically), listening to music, file sharing, remote desktop, email etc. It just runs smoother, has a nicer UI, is snappier, and you know its just going to work and not hang when you click something. That being said, if I had to choose only 1 computer to use and disregard the other, it would still have to be a Windows machine, simply because that 1% of things i'd rather do on a PC, are things you CAN'T do on a Mac, like proper gaming, indie titles, and all of those weird and wonderful .exe apps you find that suit your every need.

lol that's how I feel. imo windows went downhill after 7 and the only thing it's better at is games so I switched to mac and never looked back a few years ago. That being said the only way I'd ever go back to windows is if I got back into gaming and wanted to build a gaming pc in one of those xbox style pc cases and just use it for games and shit.

I have Mac and my wife has Windows. It is incredible how many times Windows bugs and asks questions as if all users had to be IT professionals. My Mac never does that. Besides that, Windows has that Outlook which is just hell on earth. So, once I changed to Mac I never even thought about coming back. I just hate my wife's struggle with her PC and having to turn it off 2-3 times a day because it just stops working.

TLDR: For tinkerers, nerds, gamers and frugal people, having a Windows is best. For professional work, having a Mac is best. As for me, I have both, MacBook for work and Windows Desktop at Home. I was a staunch Windows user when I was in college and regularly gaming, torrenting, hobby hacking, and messing around with computers. I love it because I own my computer, and there are not many restrictions to play around with every aspect of the computer including BIOS, Boot OS, etc. I still, to this day enjoy doing the above things as a hobby and maintain a gaming Windows laptop/desktop on the side. For everything else, and for serious professional work, Mac helps stay focused on the work I am doing, and it just disappears into the background. It is perfect for doing serious work, and I still can perform many tasks but it has to be something that is legal and supported by Apple. It is also more expensive, as you pay for this convenience.

I do appreciate your thorough comparison of the user experience in all aspects, however I would have liked a section on performance, which really, really matters to me. I use big, fat photo editing programs in my pursuit of astrophotography, and raw speed is very important. I can go to Nanoreview and look at specs, but a more nuanced review of performance is always of great interest to me. Or did I miss your comments on this aspect? I looked at all your chapters and listened to most of the ones I thought would likely deal with performance, but didn't encounter much. ??

The Macbooks have been outstanding since the Apple Silicon release in 2020 and I can't see myself going to another laptop any time soon. That said, on the desktop, I prefer running Ubuntu or Linux Mint and also can't see myself switching there because of the power and customization (all the parts I need, none of the ones I don't) I can put into a machine I built myself for my usecase.

@@RK-um9tu why should I care if there are lawsuits against Apple? I’m sure there are as they are not a customer focused company at all and I’m sure they don’t take accountability for their actions. That doesn’t mean their laptops aren’t the best on the market - I’ve used a ton of different laptops over the past few years and these are the best.
