Macau - Macau to be handed over to China in 1999

Down the coast from Hong Kong the residents of the Portuguese
colony of Macau will be anxiously watching the handover of the
enclave to China at the end of this month - knowing that their
turn comes in 1999.
The Portuguese having twice offered to hand over Macau since the
1960's. Beijing, struggling with poverty and unrest, rejected
the offer both times.
Eventually a joint Sino-Portuguese Declaration was signed in
April 1987, setting 1999 as the handover date.
