Macbeth Act 3 Scene 4 | The ghost of Banquo haunts Macbeth 

In Shakespeare's Macbeth, a brave Scottish general (Macbeth) receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia.
The scene of Banquo’s ghost further reveals Macbeth’s unfitness as a murderer. His conscience, first activated immediately after he kills Duncan, continues to torture him until he cannot sleep at night. But he is in too deep and has no choice but to kill Banquo, whom the three witches proclaimed would father a line of Kings, one of which Macbeth fears will overthrow him.
But after ordering the murder of Banquo, his conscience now screams to him daily until Banquo finally materializes before his eyes. Shakespeare imbues the scene with irony as Banquo’s ghost chooses Macbeth’s seat at the table to occupy.
