Even if you absolutely need to take notes on a touch screen, you also have the option to buy an MacBook Air + iPad Gen 9 + Pencil Gen 1 for the same budget as an iPad Air 5 (256 GB) + Pencil Gen 2 + Keyboard. So I agree with your conclusion. Buying an MacBook Air is the better option in most cases.

I have a pair of iPad Air 5’s and a M1 MacBook Air. I have virtually stopped using the MacBook Air in favor of the iPads. The one area where the MacBook Air is vastly superior is battery life. It is almost double of the iPad. That’s why I have two iPad Air 5’s; a 256gb model and a 64gb model (that i use when the 256gb is recharging and as a backup). I guess I might be a bit biased towards the iPad.

My 2015 Macbook pro Retina is slowly reaching the end of its life cycle so i'm in the market for a replacement. I was hesitating between those 2 devices to replace it. But since i already own an iPad mini 5th gen, i think i'm gonna go with the M1 MacBook Air, even though i'd love to own such a versatile device as the iPad Air is with the Pencil/keyboard combo.. The difference in battery life only is already an absolute tie breaker, and i would really like to use a big monitor when I'm working at my desk.

Just keep both and use Universal Control/ side car ferature. Easy to get sucked in the appeal of the ipad setup with the magic keyboard. Functionality will always be better on the laptop. Good review though, very accurate.

Agree 100%. I have both and each pro & con is exactly as Terren describes. I do hope for the day the iPad can do what the MacBook can do, but we are far from that day.

I want to go with the MacBook Air but movies and video's are darker than on the iPad. New Air coming might address that but do I really want to pay so much extra for 100 nits or so of brightness? Decisions???

The lighter weight of the MacBook Air M1 and its battery life is the difference maker for me. I have an iPad Pro 11” 2020 and a MacBook Air M1. Since I had the MacBook Air M1, the iPad Pro 11” started to be less used… It is but just during light use…. MacOS is way more professional than iPadOS… iPad + Smart Keyboard + Pencil makes the bill pretty big too

Great comparison. I just bought the iPad Air with Magic Keyboard (totally changes the feel of the device and is very premium) and pencil.. it’s amazing for lying in bed doing HW or watching a show. It’s also cool to be able to take it off the keyboard if you don’t want the laptop situation. It’s also very compact if needed. Now I have to pick up a MacBook after watching your vid to contrast.

You are really good on your comments. I need to know what is the better choice between a Mac Book Air or iPad Air and i saw many videos that does not helped me. But appear you and your brilliant comments, very usefull comments, telling the truth and the real benefits to work in one or other device and now i have a clear decision to buy my device. I know now with certainty that i have the desire to have and iPad Air because is very versatile but, having my Mac Book Pro since 5 years, i know that work in home with an Mac Book Air is going to be much better as usual in my Mac. Other thing that you have all the reason is that if you have all the benefits with an iPad Air, you have to buy the Keybord, the cover, the pencil and you finally spent more money to have all the benefits with an iPad Air, in the other hand the Mac Book Air include all and more benefits with less money. Obviously the must important thing that you do in this video is not to say wich device is better, the must important thing that you say is the benefits of two devices and open us the eyes to decide wich device i have to buy for my needs. Thanks, Terren, for giving me so much clarity. I am torn between an Ipad Air 5 or Ipad gen 9. On the one hand, I want the latest and greatest. On the other, I know very well that I don't really need the greatest and the latest. I already have an M1 Mac Mini (16RAM and 512GB). After watching this video, I should probably just get an ipad gen 9.

About hardcore gaming...you should've mentioned the cloud gaming 😉 such as Xbox ultimate pass or stadia and so on. You can play games then on Mac and ipad with a controller in this case

You buy the MacBook Air, it has more storage and specific apps and overall power for more than everyday use. However, in my case, I bought the M2 MacBook Air and the M1 iPad Air and use them to compliment each other, share between, use the iPad as a second screen/extended monitor and for art work I want to draw. But they're still both VERY different.

I find myself using my MacBook for watching a video for exercise and exel occasionally. The rest i can use my pc. I feel that for what i use my mac i can use my ipad. I think i may use ipad especially no that u can tranfer data to the new iPad air

For me iPads are made just for fun… and its good for photographers/designers. If you have to work seriously, you have to get an MacBook/Notebook.

Good review Terren. I cannot use the iPad as my only computer anyways, since my office requires Citrix and what not. I own the iPhone 13 Pro Max, Airpods 3rd gen (can't stand the buds for prolonged zoom calls), iPad mini 6 cellular for note taking predominantly (office notes, journaling etc and RU-vid in leisure)and my faithful Macbook Air (16GB RAM and 512GB SSD). Absolutely love my choices and thoroughly loving the  ecosystem!! ♥️

Some points in favor of the iPad. You don’t need the magic keyboard lol. Get a Logitech if you must have that 2 in 1 functionality on the go. Otherwise save the money and get a Bluetooth keyboard. Also when you factor in the base storage and the Apple Pencil, you have to consider there’s literally nothing on the Mac side that can compete with the iPad. Meaning you shouldn’t factor in the pencil price when comparing both 256 GB models haha.

I’m assuming IPad OS 17 wasn’t out yet when you made this video? Now with Stage Manager and the other upgrades, how do you feel about the trade? Also, with this like 3rd party Magic Keyboards and Apple Pencils now much better plus less expensive, how do you feel? I have both also. I paid about $400 for my MacBook Air used. I paid I believe $275 for my IPad Air then $50 for a third party Magic Keyboard, then another $50 for a used Apple Pencil 2. So basically I’m about $400 in for each, and less than the price for the MacBook Air for both. I came over from Windows when I saw the power of the M1 chip. I am struggling with with Mac OS but I’ve had IPhones for years, so IPad OS isn’t that difficult for me. I personally would prefer a Microsoft Surface Pro over either of these, once the chipset catches us with the M3 chips simply because that 1 device is both of these, and more portable than either. It feels extremely strange to me to have an iPad and a MacBook in my bag after being used to having just a Surface Pro. Plus, I have the Surface Due as my second phone. So if I needed to use a computer for heavier tasks but take notes, I still have a lighter and more portable setup for that. Microsoft and Windows is just so much better to me, but the M series chips are winning right now. The speed and battery life is not comparable. I own a behavioral private school system, so I’m big on using the best technology to accomplish my goals, because it allows me to serve more youth. Our youth live in poverty and face extremely high risks, so whatever it takes to serve them well. I push to spend our resources wisely, which is why I buy used or shop around heavily. But I want to use the best tools and give them the best results possible. I travel a lot also because we have offices from New York to Atlanta, so portability is important. Having both the iPad and the MacBook isn’t ideal but they’re both very light, so it’s not the worst. Like I said, I kept a device to work with and to write on, but when one of those can fit in your pocket, that is a little different.

Well for me, I start university in September and I have the iPad Air 2020 and the M1 MacBook Air. I am upgrading to the M1 iPad Air Maxed out with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil as my main computer now because I don't want to carry 2 devices with me daily and the iPad lets me make notes with the Apple Pencil too, so it's the perfect combo for me. I'll study computer science and the M1 is so impressive that I chose an iPad for programming. I use CodeApp to code in Python/Java/C++/JavaScript as well as Swift playgrounds to code native iOS and macOS apps on the go. THe 5G will be a game changer for me because I travel a lot and the internet connection via mobile data is a game changer. I will upgrade late August to the new M1 iPad because I'm waiting for iPadOS 16 to come out so that I can use stage manager and may Studio Display as a scaled 2nd monitor to work on. Not to mention that I will also use it to do 4K video editing in Luma Fusion paired up with a LaCie SSD, document writing in word/microsoft office, programming, app designing etc. This is more or less my dream device and I will use it together with my M1 MacBook Air from time to time. But now, the M1 iPad Air is the best device for a university student. PS: Sorry for writing a lot, I'm like to go deep in explaining stuff HAHA

I find it interesting that you’ll be studying computer science and yet you still go with an IPad.. mainly because I feel like that major would require certain applications for you to run that the IPad isn’t designed to have yet. I would honestly like to know if it’s something that can get you through 4yrs without converting back to a laptop.

@@davayun well I can code python , java, javascript, C and C++ from an app called CodeApp which is essentially a Visual Studio Code clone and also code SwiftUI via the new Swift Playgrounds app. But I chose to upgrade to the M2 Macbook Air with 24GB ram and 512GB ssd since I already own an iPad Air 2020 and there’s no need to upgrade really

if you don't have a laptop/desktop and you can only buy one thing then get the macbook, if you already have a good enough computer then get the ipad, the ipad cannot replace a macbook, the only thing the ipad can do better is pencil stuff

on a second note my M1 MB air only lasts 6:45 min watching twitch and doing very light things sporadically, I consider it's battery life barely acceptable, my previous 13" intel MB pro was barely capable of lasting 3.5 hours on the same test

I don't think there's a need for such a high-end phone when you have a high performance tablet. For instance if I'm needing to go to cafe I'd do all my browsing and news reading etc on the iPad and use the phone as a hotspot.
