If you would have asked me 3 years ago when I was running a 6core liquid cooled heavily overclocked CPU with a titan Black GPU (best GPU at the time) 32GB ram, 2 SSD's, and 2HHD's in raid, there is no way I would believe you that I would be editing 4K off a laptop with a 45watt CPU and 35watt GPU. Great video I'm glad you're having a good experience. Once you get used the FC more, you'll enjoy the speed benefits of the editing layout not only the faster render and hardware utilization speeds. One thing I wanted to note is you're comparing it to a top of the line PC (like you said) with 1080 GPU, but if you were to compare it with a similarly priced windows laptop running Ppro that would be even more evident. Also the reason background optimization was taking very long could also be the fact that whenever you do any editing, it pauses the background optimization to give you system resources to edit with. Typically if I set optimization (mainly for 4k 3+ camera multi-cam) I'll just do it at a time I'm not working on the system or overnight. I've edited a 6 cam 4K (full ProRes not proxy) at full 4K preview resolution under "better quality" without any issues! So for that work you want the optimization. Really enjoyed your video! Great job!
Oh for sure! I didn't make it clear but I was hoping the audience would get it from subtext, if i'm comparing this laptop to a 6 core windows/premiere machine with a gtx 1080, the gap would only widen with a windows laptop. Really good advice, i'll try do that for the next project. Honestly thank's so much for answering all of my questions man, your advice has been invaluable.
Not going to lie, when it comes to editing videos etc, MacBook pro does its thing, on the other hand in other areas it's rubbish at. Also i love the crisp video quality you got there bruh.
Didn't try it sorry! I'm assuming it would be fairly bad. It runs ok on my desktop with a sata ssd, i'm assuming performance would be final cut- desktop premiere pro - laptop premiere pro.
Hey, Matt! How do you achieve clear hiss-free audio? Do you use any noise reduction techniques? I've posted my first video couple days ago and I'm not happy with my sound.
Just had a watch, that video was seriously good for your first one man! Honestly I did absolutely no sound processing in this video. Normally I take it into audacity or adobe audition and remove static (take a sample where i'm making no other noise, and then process the whole clip to remove the static). There are a couple of tutorials on how to do this, it's super easy to do.
Matt Kjer I'm a perfectionist-procrastinator kinda guy:) Been postponing making this video for several months, although I knew nothing was gonna be perfect for the first time:)
god dammit I'm trying to transition away from Apple. How does Adobe Premiere CC and AE CC work on this same laptop? I'd love to see how long the renders are for color grading and working with cg.
These machines absolutely choke on 4k footage in Adobe Premiere. Even cutting a 30 second spot is grueling. Also, try being on a photoshoot today (10 months after original publication of this video) - and dealing with multiple harddrives from your photograph's digital technician. None of them are going to fit the 4 USB-C ports. We are still HARDLY EVER seeing USB-C accesories so you'll need multiple dongles to leave at the office or lose on set. Oh, and dont forget it doesn't plug directly into ANY of your proprietary apple connectors new or old...
Greg J Barber Yeah it's not fantastic, I've started to do some still work with it and i'm unsure how it'll handle continuous auto focus or sports. Very keen to see how the gh5 goes
This was very useful brotha! I used premiere for 10 years, used Lumafusion for 2 now(Lumafusion is ipad version of fcp “basically”) i returned my fully spec’d MBP 2018 cus i didnt really like it. But now looking into getting one again for travel etc as Lumafusion can export to FCP. And ofc the new 16 mods and update of FCP makes it even better. Thanks again brotha!
I’ve actually swapped over to davinci resolve since, I’ve been editing 4K projects easily on that. It’s been great so far although I’m not going to lie, a 16” would be amazing. Definitely gets bogged down with large photoshop files but editing 10-20 minute talking head videos is all good with 4K content on a 1080p timeline
I'm debating on pulling the trigger on the new MacBook Pro. Due to the price and some other things I'm not happy about and some other reviews I've read I'm considering the 2015 model. Any thoughts/opinions? Currently I'm not editing 4K.
Lol, wishing I had this while I edit on my family's standard Asus PC with Sony Movie Studio 13.0. 4m render time for a 9m project in 4k...good Heavens, it'd take me 4 hours to render.
Because the 13" version has no gpu, I wanted to max it out for $2900 and get an external gpu with a gtx 1080. I keep hearing online that because of the AMD graphics card, windows through boot camp does not accept the external gpu. But the 13" does. Do you think the 13" screen is too small, what do you think is the better deal, maxed out 13" for $2900 or maxed out 15" for $3500. I would also be using Final Cut Pro for editing videos. My current laptop was from 2008 and was a hp pavilion that also has a touch bar and a computer with an i3 processor and no graphics card, so I really need an upgrade that can replace everything, I want to get the bizon box 3 but it is not compatible with the 15," only the 13". What are your thoughts?
Btw, this laptop would be used for high school and will last me through end of college and I will probably get the 2017 models but they would basically be the same as the 2016 models so that's why I'm asking.
Personally, given the state of flux that external gpu enclosures are in right now with macbooks, i'd go for the tried and true 15" macbook pro. You'll have less compatibility issues. That being said people have got external gpu's to work, Dave2d has a video dedicated to this. For me personally, I wouldn't want to bother with the hassle of getting and external gpu doc to work properly, i'd get the 15" and be happy with an all in one solution.
Matt Kjer I didn't understand what Dave was saying in his video, so if you plug a razed core into boot camp windows 10, it would run smoothly or would there be problems?
Again, i'm not the person to ask unfortunately. I've had no first had experience with the razer cores or external gpu enclosures, so any advice I give you will just be misinformed. I'd ask on some forums or with people who've actually tried what you're attempting to do.
Hey, If I'd be buying the MBP 15" 2016 with this config, would it still be reliable for video editing using FCPX? (Or should I just consider the MBP 13" version) 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 3.5GHz 16GB 2133MHz memory *256GB PCIe-based SSD (I'll buy an external drive instead) **Radeon Pro 460, 4GB memory (maybe the only upgrade I'll pay for?) I often get my video clips from my GoPro set at, 1080p and 4k all the time and I also use Adobe Lightroom for my photography using raw files. So considering these factors, should I get the 15" or the 13"? What should I upgrade for my needs (if I need to)? Thanks!
thanks for your awesome vid, Ive got a quick question, Im on the fence between 2017 13 with touch bar $1800 and 15 with touch bar $2400. I will be using Final Cut pro for editing, and all my vid will be less than 10min. would it be ok to go with 13inch or go with 15inch?
Thanks for this video. Question: a refurbished 2015 15inch 16gb RAM costs about the same as the 2017 13inch touchbar 16gb RAM - anyone know how they compare for video editing? Specifically 4k on Premiere Pro CC 2017? Cheers!
lol spot on. I've swapped out to a Sony A7iii for the last year or so. Really miss the video capabilities of the GH5 + the articulating screen but as long as the sony is pointed towards me, I don't have to worry about being in focus :D
3am in the morning here guys but i'll update the description with more detailed specs for the render test soon. The final project (this video exported in 7 minutes and 5 seconds, effects, color grades. The works. Impressive.
Mmmm, at that price range it would have to be 1080p maximum. It mighhhhhhht be possible if you went second hand, definitely not new I don't think. If you pushed your budget to 750 then definitely!
I wouldn't be able to say sorry! I didn't test premiere pro on this laptop and i'm unsure what the performance would be like. I think 1080p video would be ok to edit but i'd have a look at some premiere pro macbook videos. I definitely don't think it would be great to edit on but capable. That's my opinion but it comes from a poorly educated guess as opposed to research.
I wanted the portability if i'm honest! I already have a desktop, the macbook pro was to serve as a portable video editing and application/web development machine. That being said i'm still not sure if i'll keep it. $3700 was a lot of money and I'm wanting to start up a photography business so... lenses + lighting may replace the macbook lol
professional editors need reliability. If you're down for half a day that can be hundreds and hundreds of dollars lost, plus professional reputation. Not worth it.
It lacks a dedicated graphics card, if you converted it to proxy files beforehand potentially? I didn't have any hands on experience with the 13" and it does lack the dedicated graphics so I would be hesitant to say yes.
Yes: with a base 13 inch 2015 MBP I can edit 4k from a GH4 without transcoding. Of course, I´m not getting same performance as on my desktop (a big Mac Pro with a good GPU for FCPX), but it´s perfectly usable.
Thanks for the review! From which camera came the 4k clips that you edited? Because the codec makes quite a difference in how much effort the computer has to exert.
yellowfuse Me and you both! I was really nervous picking up the machine not knowing it would be suitable but really happy with how it performs. Titles and effects make it chug a bit but apart from that. Muah 👌
