@@ardidana6293 nice! I really don't think you can go wrong with the base if that's all you need - and 8GB of RAM is going to be enough for graphic design
Can't wait to use it when it's arrived, number one reason that I'm switching to macbook is consistent performance over 5 or more years which is something you don't get on high end pc, I mean sure, they can be 10 time faster at first but become hard to use after 3 years.
Just got the m3 pro macbook pro space black 14" coming from a dual core base model 2017 macbook pro. And this is an absolute beast, great purchase for sure, I've also yet to hear the fans kick on feel it get warm. 10/10
Unless you want to buy it then just buy it . Honestly the amount of confusing and contradictory information from one RU-vidr to another … if you have money and you want to buy it just get the damn thing 30 day return policies are a thing ...
A 100%, I wanted to buy it when it came out and then all these RU-vidrs started crying about not enough RAM, and I am still confused if I should buy it or not! I am just going to get it.
That's really bad advice. If you're spending a lot of money you should understand what you're getting. Listen to all the info, filter it with your own brain, then spend your money.
@@alichamas63 you’re literally saying the same 😂 there are things called return policies , nobody who buys tech are not protected in some way shape or form. You need it and have the money buy it and after a few days realise it’s not for you send it back easy . Make your own mind up … we used to be able to do that sort of thing
@PillsCureMyDepression Thats bad advice, definitely should watch this video. Its simply a bad deal to get the M3 if you are going to up it to 16gb, as its the exact same price (maybe $100 more if sales arent good) as getting the M3 Pro with 18gb. The m3 pro gives you huge performance updates on CPU/GPU, additional ports, and much faster storage. Honestly, for most people the 8gb option is just fine though and you can get that machine on sale for $400-700 less than the 16gb upgrade. Its just infuriating that apple doesnt default to 16gb and charges so much to upgrade. I got my m3 mbp base model for $1100, but the best deal i could get on a refurb/sale price 16gb was $1550. Even then, way better to spring for that $1650 m3 pro model refurb
With the advancement of semiconductor processes, I think it is more appropriate to buy the basic model. For most people, it should be able to provide you with sufficient performance and better battery life (which I think is more important for most). The only drawback is the number of screens.
Started watching this vid today on my 2017 Asus ROG and finished on my new M3 Pro w/ 12 core upgrade (because it's the only Pro in store stock with 18GB RAM and 1 TB drive). Don't worry, been researching this decision for awhile now but this one helped me make up my mind. Lovin' it.
M3 pro 16 inch, you'll have zero regrets. Duel fans, beautiful screen size so you can actually have side by side program's on your inbuilt screen! Youll be able to read everything much better, comes with 18gb ram stock too. Its light and thin, there is only a select few reasons why id recommend the 14 inch, i came from a 14. 14 is good if youre almost always using an external monitor at home. If you work from a cafe, school ect get the 16! Its your main monitor then.
I picked up a base 16-inch M3 Pro after having a 14-inch base M1 Pro for the same reason. I got over $1,000 for trade-in and just went with the base 16" M3 Pro. The battery that these chips can hold because of the e-cores is pretty nice even while still maintaining the power.
Not considering the amazon discounts, for my case i think the m3 16gb is the sweet spot since it has the best display with the best battery life and the performance difference between is not worth imo. As always, nice video Brandon! Keep it up.
Very interesting. I think I'll stick to my M2, (midnight) I love this thing. I mean I store nothing on the Mac, I pretty much load everything from an external drive or from the cloud. And so far, i've not had any issues.
I push my MBP 16” M2 Max 64GB Ram in editing/rendering weddings into the 50’s (50ish GB of Ram used,) and I’ve even gone into swap memory. Yes, if you are just a web browsing warrior; 8GB is plenty, but think long and hard on the Ram you choose if you plan on pushing your machine for what it was made for 👍
@@LordBagdanoff I would get as much as you can afford. These laptops are expensive to start with. You can’t upgrade. You will likely keep it for years… You “can” video edit with 18GB, but like I said, I’ve gone into swap memory with 64GB, so 🤷♂️
MacBook Pro 14 M3 8/512 is the best "Netflix laptop" from Apple! Because of the battery life. The main problem: the branding! Should not even be called MacBook Pro. Just "MacBook" because in that case that will not build up the higher expectation.
Hi! Do you think that the m3 MacBook pro base model would be great for a graphic design student? I was thinking about getting the m2 MacBook air, but if I spend a little bit more I’m getting a better and a bigger screen( and better performance?)I would be using mostly photoshop for digital illustrations, and lightroom for some photo editing. How much would it last for in your opinion, because I’m looking for a laptop which can be used for at least 3-5 years.
well there's a 10 min video above that would help you make an informed decision. He just said that you can only connect 1 ext monitor w m3 vs m3 pro. But since you seem to have trouble making your own decisions, I'd get an m3 pro base model as the RAM is 18gb and use the student discount. Finance if you have an apple card with a $10k limit. Since that $2000 or $1800 will be a balance, that you cannot pay off in bigger chunks on your own time, than the monthly financing dollar amount that you sign up for. In the future, I'd have a little more confidence in your own decisions. You can probably get away with an apple certified refurb m2 air or m2 pro for $1600. But air's get throttled in intensive preformance tests. M3 Pro chip has 2 fans vs 1 fan in all other models and a higher base RAM, you have to have 16GB RAM minimum unless you're a light user.
@@eltechnicahey bruh i want to create music beats and also want to do editing i dont have any lap so i want to so i could start i saw many reviews they sayin m3air not fit for these should m3pro 18gb ram one would be okay? I cant spend more its quite expensive in my country
The base M3 is the sweet spot for users that don't need the extra power, but want single core speed and pro hardware, I got mine with 16 gb RAM (I'm not stupid) it's still a sweet deal as far as I'm concerned. BTW these deals are only available in the States not Europe
I don't really know what to choose. the MacBook M3 Air 16GB/512GB (€1,760) or the MacBook M3 Pro 8GB/512GB (€1,850). I would mainly use it to edit photos on Photoshop. The better screen quality and the SD card slot on the PRO model is a big advantage for me. Or am I better off with the Air M3 16GB/512GB because it has more RAM? I use a Nikon D750 and edit an average of 500 photos per year. So not a heavy user I guess? My current laptop is an Acer nitro 5 (8GB/512GB) from 2019
Cool video, well done ! does the 14inch M3 pro thermal throttle after some hours of video editing 4K videos ? Does the editing software force you to switch to proxy low resolution playback of your video footage after some hours ?
One month later and absolutely loving my m3 pro MacBook! Super fast, great update from my Intel Mac. I agree no one should buy the base M3 and almost no one with an apple silicon Macbook pro should upgrade to the m3 chips. I think this device is best for first time Mac buyers looking to get into the apple Mac ecosystem and those with Intel Macs like myself. Great video as always!
This is one of my favorite reviews comparing real world performance with the 8GB vs 18GB of ram. I"m glad the 8GB did so well. I just traded in a M1 MBA with 8GB, and the previous base MBA before that had 4GB, so thought the M3 should have 16GB. I settled on the M3 Pro with 18GB. At least it was on sale as a lot of people are opting for the M2 with more RAM. The M3 Pro is super nice screen, sound, ports, and should still be capable with more intensive programs if I get back into that kind of workflow, and really like the 14 inch footprint and size. If I didn't have so much screen time the 13 inch Air was really convenient and light.
@Art-is-craft are you sure? From what I understand, even if you're just heavily using the browser with many tabs open, the system will start using SSD storage as swap memory
Just grabbed the MacBook Pro 14-Inch M3 Max 14-Core CPU, 30-Core GPU (36GB Unified RAM, 1TB SSD, Space Black) - will be my first ever macbook for my travel videography I do :D
The base model has always been called the Macbook Pro, even in Intel days, and it never had a dGPU. The average person may get confused with how Apple labels its brand lineup, but the "pro" suffix describes top-of-the-line, not "for professionals" per se, ergo the iPhone Pro line. The chip is what designates "pro". The MB Pro 14 M3 is an ultrabook chip, the M3 Pro chip is for semi-pros, and the M3 Max chip is for professionals. And by pros, I mean heavy on performance.
@@BrandonButch Overall, it’s still freaking great and miles ahead of my M1 Pro, but more RAM didn’t alleviate the issue of webpages closing for “using too much memory.” As a student, that crap kills me, and I assumed it was the RAM and was the whole reason I upgraded. Regarding variance, It’s usually about a 2-3GB difference. IT COULD be related to the fact that I’m always in high power mode, and the 14-inch laptops didn’t have access to that feature till the M3. In general, I feel a MacBook’s RAM management is dookie. I can say that my swap usage has decreased significantly. I would find gigabytes of swab being used when I still had several gigabytes of RAM available on my M1, like it was just caching everything. On the M3 Max, it seems to opt for the unified RAM over the swapping to the SSD. Which… it didn't matter to me. I didn't care about swap. It was just something I noticed and remember everyone freaking tf out about it.
That is why you should never panic when your 8GB Mac shows 11GB being used (RAM, compressed and swapped), as it caches data for quick access and will kill that if more usable RAM is needed.
I just can't believe that having 8GB base on a Pro laptop for that price, is just ok for you. It's not about "it's enough I don't need more", but for the price you pay 16 gb should really be the minimum. On a Macbook air its fine but no on a laptop marketed to Professionals. It's not like adding another 8GB is going to cost Apple 220 €. The base model in my country (in the EU) costs 1945€, almost 2K and for that I only get 8GB ? wtf And if I want 16GB, add 220€ to the base price which is 2165€. For about the same price I can get double the ram on a Dell XPS 13. We all know that the apple upgrade tax is way too high really. It just sucks that they do that.
The problem with your argument is not that 8GB is wrong at the price; it's that if it started with 16GB, Apple would likely push prices up by $200. That is where your argument fails. Apple offers an 8GB to get the price lower for increased demand-side sales. If you want 16GB, buy that one. You will find that MS, Samsung, Dell, HP, etc., all have the same 8GB base models. Could you tell me why you jumped on Apple yet give these companies a pass? As for price, Apple is ultra-premium and has never been cheap, so there is nothing new; "insanity is repeating the same" (sic) every year despite knowing this fact.
@@andyH_Englandyes apple would do that but 8 more GB doesn't cost 200€, if we were in 2005, maybe but not in 2023. 8GB would cost 40€ max and even that is stretching it. Since Apple doesn't want to cut on their margins (like every company) they would just put higher prices (Apple is on another level in that regards). As to why i give the other brands a pass, its very simple. Their 8GB laptops aren't 2000€, the most expensive 8GB version i saw from a quick search is 1100€. From what i read of your post you seem to think i'm an Apple hater, well i'm not lol. I love Apple but that situation shouldn't be normal and we shouldn't accept that because what ever Apple does, the rest of the industry just blindly follows. The only losing party here is us, the consumers as we will pay more for less.
Dude. All the other laptop manugacturers allow for upgrades of RAM and storage (SSD) so you could upgrade anytime unlike apple's unified memory architecture. I tried the base M3 and it ran out of memory. It will kill the ssd in 2 years at most due to swapping. So returned it and got the base M3 Max with 36gb ram. Now it has zero swap no matter what I do. It's still expensive though. @@andyH_England
the main reason to go for the M3 pro is for the more extra ram, everything is i don’t need. with that being said i would go with the m3 since it runs just fine with 8gb

It just depends on your starting point and personal needs. For me a MacBook Air might have been enough. But the first M3 MacBook Pro has a fan, better screen, better speakers and more ports. You could be making a video about every model being 'better'. So this video was unconvincing to me since I have different needs and the regular M3 is the best option for me. Apple should at least put 16 GB in the base model MacBook pros, I don’t know what their logic is. 8 gigabytes of RAM isn’t the same as having 16 GB of ram.

In terms of fans, the key question is whether having would make a real difference with an M3 chip. As can be inferred in this and other tests, fans are well below max speed even with various demanding tasks, such as video editing. So, can this really be a reason to choose the M3 pro over the M3?
Definitely not as a sole reason, but it is something to consider if it’ll be in clamshell mode on a desk for years. That’s when heat becomes more of an issue in my experience, and I prefer the best cooling I can get in that situation
Single fan is good for now. If I didn’t had fans in my 2015 MBPro I would have to change it few years ago. When I bought it it didn’t need to use fans at all but now. It goes almost all the time. It is still good laptop but need cooling down. I even got some external fans. So if u want to buy Maxbook for a very long time go for double fan 16gb MacBook Pro. Under that might be good FOR NOW
Adorama had the better deal than Amazon on the M3 with the apple insider code. Scored the M3 pro w/ 36GB Ram for $1999. I can easily get into the yellow memory pressure on that and was glad I upgraded to that (I need to be able to run Windows 11 ARM in a VM)
Thanks so much... The Key is knowing what you need and if you plan on using your laptop a long time then consider the upgrades. I run Illustrator and Photoshop and other software all the time. For what I do I 8 GB is bad news for me. Too many freezes and having to go shut things down. I went to 16 GB on a MacBook pro years ago, and it was better up until recently... I had to get a Windows 11 for work (I feel like a traitor, LOL), but working with 32 GB and 64 GB Windows... I will never buy anything below 32gb again... I am a firm believer in buying as much RAM as you can afford. What is the use of buying a beast machine and limiting yourself? Spend the extra money on the 16 core and 32 gb of ram... yeah idk about all of that, but I will say that 8GB will be enough for anyone looking at a base model. I really tried to disprove that many times within my workflow and could not. I guess it'll take some very extreme/intensive task for 8GB to slow your workflow down significantly
They mean you can easily make 8GB go a lot further in daily tasks. I have a base MB Pro 13 M1 and use 13GB plus with no issues, even though it only has 8GB of physical RAM. Apple uses AI/ML to manage RAM aided by compression and swap.
I got the 16" m3 macbook pro with 36gigs of ram. I only went that high with ram because Amazon had a great deal. Otherwise I was gonna go for the 1tb hd instead of the 512gig. So I'm probably gonna get an nice external SSD to make up for the lack of space.

I stream, a lot of music, watch a lot of RU-vid, a lot of FaceTime as well, that's about it, I wouldn't classify myself as a heavy user. I'm kind of stuck at the moment. I'm strictly voiceover, so the monitor stuff doesn't mean anything. Steve P.
I upgraded to an m3 pro 18gb of ram because I got a real deal on it. Otherwise the MacBook Pro M2 with 16 gig of ram / 512 or 1tb hd will be an instant classic for everything and will become like the 2015 MacBook Pro standard in the years to come.
Everything would be kosher if base M3 came with 12gb and M3 Pro was 24gb. Even with their laughable stock storage of 512gb, at least the ram is in a comfortable place for their price points. M3 shines in battery life. It does almost make me wana upgrade the ram to 16 and enjoy the 4hrs extra life (and more importantly, battery health longevity). M3 is about as powerful as the M1 Pro, which is a great machine. But 8gb ram uses way too much swap, way too often, and it’s brand new.. not even a few years old. So for 5+yrs, it just doesn’t seem like a wise investment.. let alone a decade. I mean, this is the same ram spec we had 3 years ago! So crazy. The base cpu/gpu should be fine for a decade, but the ram will just cause too many issues down the line.. tons of swap, and it’ll compound as programs and nonsense become more taxing.
Just have 14 inch M1 pro 16GB refurbish version, expected to last another 5-6 years more, at least until I am confortable enough in term of financial for M6 or M7 pro at that point because so far I only use this laptop for 4 years university and maybe photography and light videos editing
His videos are misleading, as even when doing RAM-intensive tasks slower than an 18GB version, for the base model user, it is seconds/minutes and not a deal breaker; it still does the job! But for day-to-day work, which is where the base is targeted, it is as fast as 16GB/18GB.
For me, I will get the M3 pro 16 inch MacBook Pro I feel like it’s the best one you can get simply because you get two fans you don’t sacrifice battery life and you get a bigger screen granted it’s a little more expensive, but I almost say it’s worth it if you can find deals on it take advantage of them Oh, and one terabyte storage just the future proof
I want a MacBook with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. Should I buy the m3 pro model or wait for the MacBook Air m3? I’m not a content creator or something like this. I want to be sure that I got a MacBook that is good for the next 10 years.
"MacBook that is good for the next 10 years." - while some computers _can_ work for decades - I have a 20 year old original MacBook Pro and it still boots fine - the reality is the software will become obsolete. Which is why I don't use my old MacBook Pro. You should expect only 6 _useful_ years for a laptop. And recommend getting AppleCare for laptops. If you are not a video maker and only need the base capacities (RAM, SSD) then go for the MacBook Air. A 15" MBA with M3 (coming in March?) will be less expensive than the smaller 14" MBP w/ M3 Pro chip. _But by the time you add two, and definitely if you add three, upgrades_ to the 15" MBA you'll be paying as much as the base 14" MBP with M3 Pro chip. *The discount price for the 14" MBP M3 Pro base model is $1849, which is likely the best deal for something useful for 6 or 7 years.*
I got a Mac book air 2012screen broke now I’m debating on mac book pro 14 inch M3pro or m3 max. I like to use for music mainly I’m looking the price difference like hmm.
I got my M1 Pro MBP literally weeks before the M2 lineup dropped 🥲 I'll probably wait until the year before OS support for it drops before getting a new Mac. That's what I did when I switched from my late 2013 13" retina MBP, albeit a few years after it stopped receiving major macOS updates.
@@BrandonButch Yes I have and I didn’t even mention performance in my comment. You have to understand the reason why so many people have coined “The Apple RAM Scam”. In this day and age, at Apple’s price point, it is downright unethical to make the base model 8gb. Although I doubt that you will ever criticize Apple fairly because doing so would forfeit all the review units or Apple money coming your way. It’s obvious that the 8gb RAM base model solely exists just to make the consumer consider upgrading to a Pro Macbook instead, a proven business tactic of Apple as seen with their iPhone lineups. The logic: This year’s iphone 15 has last year’s chip, guess id just spend a little extra to get an iphone 15 pro The same logic in macbooks: if i get this 8gb ram macbook m3, thatd just be the price of an m3 pro macbook.
