My $3,000 MacBook Pro's battery was swelling/exploding. The case was being warped and the mouse pad could no longer be pushed. If this sounds familiar, skip the Genius Bar and check out this video for an easy fix.
Edit: A few viewers way more knowledgeable than I have commented that my methods shown in this video are a safety hazard. Unaware at the time of my posting, there's a risk of the battery igniting if punctured. Even though everything worked out in the end, this vid is a great example of how NOT to attempt the replacement. Please use extreme caution if you try this yourself.

Omg the way you ripped the battery out LOL. You’re so lucky you didn’t puncture it and have it catch on fire LMAO!!!

Spacemonkeymojo You’re absolutely right. I was a complete novice. Please exercise caution if you try this yourself. The sad part is that the nightmare seems to be happening all over again. The battery is swelling again and it’s only been a bit over a year since I replaced it. Thankfully I have a new i9 model. I still use the older one though, so I have to decide if want to attempt fixing it again. It’s still a powerful machine even though it’s 6 years old.

@@ToddMushaw Haha sorry I wasn't trying to be rude or sound mean, I found it funny if anything. And wow really? That's so annoying! Do you keep your Macbook plugged in constantly? I think you need to cycle the battery to keep it healthy. Or is it possible you bought a dodgy battery? I'm planning on replacing my battery too as it is swollen and putting the rear panel on is difficult, and it's just unsafe to use a swollen battery. There are some good videos around on how to safely remove the battery, one method is to use a nylon string. Just tilt your Macbook so the adhesive remover will flow towards the bottom of the case (away from the logic board) and place a few drops at the top of each cell, then take a bit of nylon string and sort of saw it back and forth behind the battery to slowly remove each cell. Time consuming but safe, this replacement seems like a pain in the ass!

@@Spacemonkeymojo No offense taken at all. I appreciate the comment. I leave them plugged in most of the time. Thanks for the reminder that you have to cycle the battery. The nylon string method is brilliant!

Step number one: get rid of that coffee cup! Step number two: watch a youtube video on how to replace the battery before attempting to do it yourself.

Hey man! You fairly made a horrible job taking out the battery. I am happy you didn't damage anything, i was literally cringing while watching... but you make it looking easy... i am gonna try it though... bit more safely!

Utkan Günerkan you are absolutely right LOL! This is a complete hack job. I should change the title to "What Not to do When Fixing Your Battery". What I've since learned is that Apple doesn't bother with removing the battery. They replace the entire bottom case. The battery is glued in very securely. As you can see it takes great effort to remove it. I've also learned that there is a chance that Apple may do the repair free of charge - determined on a case by case basis. However there is a three week turnaround because the cases are in short supply. Good luck with your repair. I was extremely fortunate that I didn't damage anything.

@@ToddMushaw Yeah I was like damn..... this boi gonna get his hand blown off any minute... careful with those batteries - pulling like that dunno how you avoiding snapping and that would cause explosion... use the string method and some acetone - also plastic prods not METAL to loosen them... risk of shorting...

I have the same 2013 Macbook Pro 15 inch. That battery is an absolute bomb!!! You're lucky you didn't blow your hands and half of your face off. It's extremely easy to puncture that thing when you're trying to pull it out when it's already in bad condition. One of my small cells got scratched by a metal screw driver I had in hand by accident and it started to fire up in flames but i ran to the kitchen sink and poured a little water and luckily it did not explode in my face. (ps you shouldn't pour water apparently but it worked) I had a fire blanket right there so wrapped it and took it outside until it cooled down. Then found a crazy technician brave enough to pull the rest of the battery out for me. I hate fire. Had to drive with it wrapped in a fireblaket.

kingames kk sure. Just don’t leave it plugged in 100% of the time and remember to cycle charge it or else it will eventually swell again.

@ToddMushaw
@ToddMushaw 3 года назад
@@lyledavid_ often the issue is caused by leaving the battery constantly plugged in. You have to let it discharge from time to time. Now, I let my battery run down close to zero at least a few times a week.

It disgusts me that Apple is such a waste to the environment. What they do should be illegal. Oh, your hdd or ssd, or one stick of ram failed? Time to throw out the entire computer and pay us more money for a new one. They are located in Commiefornia for christs sake. But I can't use a plastic bag or a straw. I like their products and their laptops are definitely worth it if you ask me (no I don't pay apple for their desktops, I build them) but I don't see how this is legal to do. It's the biggest waste I have ever seen just to make another billion. Even their techs can't fix their computers now. They just order you a new one if it fails under warranty. Which is clearly so they don't have to spend money training people and paying them to fix the computer. Steve is probably rolling over in his grave.. This company is becoming super scummy.

@@ToddMushaw Question if you can help me. Which model is this Macbook? Mine is late 2013, and Apple have ingeniously designed the batteries it seems to be attached to the case and keyboard, requiring all to be replaced. I did read such a thing on another article as well, so it's not empty claim. Is yours the same? And is that why you had to take it out this way, and it cost you far less? The only repair shop I found that can replace it for me said it will cost over $590! Can't innovate my ass for real. This is brilliant way to make money
@ToddMushaw
@ToddMushaw 5 лет назад
Bashar Abdullah same model, 2013. It’s still a very powerful computer and worth it to keep it going. I have a new i9 model now but I also still have and use the one shown in this video. However there’s no way I’d pay that amount of money to repair it. Apple was replacing the entire bottom part of the case and not bothering with removing the glued-in battery. Some were getting this done for no charge but that window probably has closed by now. You can fix it yourself. It’s easy. Just don’t remove the battery the way I did. There’s a better and safer way as someone mentioned it the comments. Just take a piece of steel cable, like something you’d use to hang a picture, and gently work it back and forth in a sawing motion beneath the battery to dislodge the glue. Just take your time and slowly work through the glue. The battery kit comes with all the tools needed. Don’t be afraid to do it yourself. Just use caution.

this is an example of ihow not to do it !!! Battery can explode if remove it like this i had once replaced a battery without being glued and it burst in to flames it burned the floor carpet like a lot and you cant just shut it down because its like fire works and the Macbook has like 6 battery cells if one goes on fire all of them will it's like a bomb..
