I'm 22 years old and a MacGyver fanboy. About a decade ago, I was recommended the show by someone who thought it would be up my alley. I guess they were right because I watched the whole series when it was on Netflix. Back then, I thought MacGyver was the type of protagonist someone my age should look up to. He had a good heart and moral compass, was intelligent and educated, and he always tried to avoid violence, even when people were trying to kill him or his friends. Richard Dean Anderson was always a delightful screen presence and the show had a good cast of recurring characters, from loyal friend and boss Pete Thornton, the comedic and conning Jack Dalton, the lovable Penny Parker, and the villainous Murdoc. I watched the MacGyver reboot as well and while I liked it, it just didn't have the same magic. This is just a reminder: As long as we remember, some shows will never truly die.

When I was a kid in the early 90's, I had an old TV with bunny ears antenna. When the antenna broke and could no longer pick up a signal, I "MacGyvered" my own antenna by linking together paper clips into a chain, stuck one end into the coaxial cable port and linked a wire clothes hanger to the other end, which I hung from the wall. Not only did it work, but it picked up a better signal than the bunny ears.

I watched McGyver as a child and Stargate SG1 in college. I always wanted to meet Richard Dean Anderson. I finally got the chance to meet him at Rhode Island Comic Con years ago. Funko Pop released his Mcgyver pop vinyl coincidently few months before. I got him to sign it and i paid to pose with him for a picture. He was super sweet person and i took a pic with him. We both hugged each other and took a pic together. I will always remember meeting him and talking to him about how McGyver got me interested in Science as a child. He was very sweet and listening to everyone that spoke to him. He did refuse to sign swiss army knifes as there was a sign that said he wont sign knifes. I am sure he gets asked that alot but doesnt do it for his safety. I am glad i took the bus to Rhode Island just to see him. This was before the pandemic so i am happy i didnt wait. I dont think he does Comic Cons anymore so im glad i didnt make any excuses and say to myself ill go next time. One of the best memories of my life.

I think the thing that I enjoy most about MacGyver in retrospect, is his non-lethal approach to his conflicts. Back in the 80s, heroes killing badguys was kind of standard operating procedures. Sure TV prohibited actually killing people, so shows like the A-Team would hit everwhere BUT the badguys, but we all know it was meant to be them killing the enemy combatants. They certainly weren't afraid of firing at other living people. But MacGyver had a very strict, no guns policy. And the fact that he found ways to use his brain, and be an INTELLIGENT hero, instead of just a gun toting hero, made for a much better rolemodel than most give him credit for.

He wasn't willing to as much as carry a gun, but improvised explosives were cool. Those explosions not hurting anyone were every bit as ridiculous as theA-Team gunplay not hurting anyone. That's Hollywood moralizing, and I don't mean that with a positive connotation. It is cool that his character's name has become a verb. That's gotta be quite the badge of honor as far as fiction writing goes.
@El3ctr0Lun4

Yes, it had a good theme. I thought at first you meant musical theme because I've been rewatching my DVD set and I will say the music in this show is great. It adds to the intensity of scenes or the mysteriousness of a storyline. The music is one of the highlights of this show. It is old now, so you have to suspend your disbelief when watching it, but what they were attempting to do was revolutionary. I love it.

The reboot was a fun show, but it forgot one of the key elements of MacGyver. The original MacGyver was well researched and occasionally had to dial it back because their DIY stuff really worked. The reboot was just another fluff piece that spewed stuff that really wasn't valid in order to make a presentation like every other show these days. Combine that with the shortened show-time in an hour these days and it really is just another cliff-note dime-a-dozen show using the name "Macgyver". The TV breaks between the add-space these days makes all these shows fluffed half hour 'Suggestions' of stories.

I’m rewatching Star Trek TNG and it’s exactly like that: episodic. One side effect of this is that often they make big discoveries that they never mention again, as such these discoveries don’t have the impact that you’d realistically think they should have on the crew or society at large. The other thing is that the characters go through an insane amount of events that should have more lasting impacts on their psyches. In other shows, so many world crimes or world ending events happen in a city that you’d think everyone shouldp just evacuate it.

Something not everyone knows about MacGyver is the fact that the very first episode was directed by the infamous "Alan Smithee". For those who do not know. I remember seeing that in the opening credits. IMDb lists Jerrold Freedman as the director. He was doing only TV movies at the time, so maybe he saw directing an episode as a step back and didn't want his name attached. In hindsight, it might've been better to have used his real name, since the show became a hit.

Cute video, but there are two things I wish had been included: 1) The fact that MacGyver's jury-rigged creations and solutions were all researched and verified (in other words, more scientifically accurate than not), and 2) The FLASH GORDON actor who portrayed the titular character is Sam J. Jones. What may have sounded like a cute "ha-ha" moment in the script was ultimately disrespectful. A LOT of fans watched and loved that movie, and Jones accomplished more with that role than most actors do with a lifetime of work behind them. He deserves to be more than a snarky back-handed punchline. Next time, give credit where it's due (or at least edit THIS video to put Jones' name onscreen).

In the facility I worked, i had seen the episode about the chocolste bare seal an acid leak. Sure enough we had an acid leak in our facility and a chocolate bar! It worked! My forman was intrigued how I came up with this and I mentioned this TV show. Many of these experiments actually work! And since then created some of my own ideas off the cuff. People began nik naming me MacGyver.

SO you mean to say, he accepted reality and worked from there to solve stuff with materials at hand and real science (not those based on models), what a novelty.

Theres a gag real for Stargate SG WHERE Carter and O'Niell were stuck with a stsr gate found under Antarctica. After awhile Carter was like YOU MEAN TOO TELL ME AFTER 30 YEARS ON MCGYVOR YOU CANT PUT DUCT TAPE AND WIRES TOGETHER AND JUST GET US OUT OF HERE?! 😂😂😂 It was funny as hell.

Sorry, but I was hoping they can get more in the subject matter and actually tell us something interesting. This feels like someone skimmed wikipedia and gave us the briefest summary ever.

One of the most successful actors of all time. Not many people were the leads of two successful, cult classic, long-running television shows.

Between MacGyver and Stargate he an impression on lots of us. Its like the movies from back there is a spark that has been lost on modern day things with all the CGI

MacGyver was the real deal. He's the Batman who didn't have or need all those money and gadgets. He didn't even need martial arts. He put most super heroes to shame. But, why the hell you have to go and mention that "reboot". OMG!! Oh and FYI, MacGyver the original TV show had ZERO woke.

the dude saved Merlin and himself from a lava pit/ trap door in England with a swiss army knife. I believe the wine cork to grip the trap door that held the weight of two grown adults. that show was just crazy enough to buy into. lol

RDA hated the reboot of MacGyver, young McGyver wasnt a hit, it failed. RDA though, he became even bigger star with Stargate Sg-1 and the Stargate franchise. just few years after MacGyver ended.

God i loved that show. It was Doctor Who for semi-realists, in a way. I loved the Macguyver/Murdock dynamic too, very Sherlock/Moriarty or Doctor/Master.

As a gun nut I always found it ironic that he didn't like guns but would happily make bombs that kill rather indiscriminately. When shooting a gun you can pick who gets shot most of the time, but with a bomb everyone is in danger of injury. The concussive effects of bombs are not well understood and the danger of internal injuries from shockwaves or brain trauma are not things that can be ignored either.
