Think the closest I saw was star trek 6 with the original crew signing off. It was touching just like this was. I like that Richard Dean Anderson personally thanked the audience as himself. Gives it that personal touch.

My dad gave me Swiss Army knife for my 10th birthday (Obviously, after seeing Macguyver - I had nagged him for months) . It was 1986...I still have it and it still works as good as new.
MacGyver has been on re-run here in Norway constantly the last 23 years after the show ended...it became very popular and it still is, everybody, young and old, "knows" MacGyver :)
What Clint Eastwood did for the Smith and Wesson revolver, Richard Dean Anderson did for the Swiss Army Knife. For all seven seasons, he should have received a commission check.
We don’t know, Richard Dean Anderson just might’ve received some kind of royalties from the company that manufactured the exact Swiss Army Knife he used throughout the coarse of the show. If he did, I’m not surprised at all. Macgyver put the Swiss Army Knife on the map. I know when I was kid watching the show, I also wanted one and my Dad bought me one as a gift. I’m sure while Macgyver was on air, the sales for those Swiss Army Knives had to of gone up.
@@s-t-f Thank you for the info. Apparently Victorinox has been manufacturing Swiss Army knives for a long time. I always assumed Macgyver used the same style knife through out the show but as I found out, he used several different styles of Swiss Army knives. All of this talk makes me wonder if I still have my Victorinox knife. Now I have to go look for it. Thanks again for giving me the name of the company. I had completely forgotten the name.

The hug was heartbreaking, because it wasn't just the last hug between MacGyver and Pete, but it was the last hug between Richard Dean Anderson and Dana Elcar as well. And you could see it in their face as well, that it wasn't just for show. It really made me cry.
Ppl say anything for attention and likes. This is completely inaccurate. They were together at an award show the following year and seen at a few events over the next decade… baseball games and premieres. Why do ppl run with these wild things in their heads?
For me, the most emotional moment in television history. No speeches, no nonsense, no claims. Just "thanking the audience for seven great seasons." Goosebumps.
I have to agree with you. I rewatched the entire series with my child, and it was something I’ll never forget. It was so important to me in my youth and to see a child in 2020 appreciate it was amazing.
Im watching MacGyver again...oh, my, I miss so much my childhood, brings me so good memories and those happy days in the 80'. I cannot believe Dana Elcar is not here anymore and RDA is already 70 y.o. 😢😢😢
Never watched a single episode of the original 'MacGyver'. Not even one. However, the classy badassery of this series-closing scene leads me to suspect that I may have missed something really good.
Correct, for then. I was a fan of the series, and not pleased ABC allowed it to "fight" with MNF. Having seen a few shows on dvd, it does, now, seem a bit cheesy and campy. Richard Dean Anderson did an excellent job with the show, including the subsequent TV movies that followed. It got many interested in science and physics. Enjoy your trip through that part of the 1980's.

+Matthew Bunn It's a joke because RDA played O'Neill in SG-1, who comes out of retirement in the first episode. The show started a few years after MacGyver ended.

That's nonsense. If anything, abrupt cancellations were WORSE back then. The reason being that episodes were not serialized as much as they are now. So there was little thought of having a goodbye arc or giving a sense of resolution. At best somebody might get married and go off on a honeymoon or Richard Kimble finding the man with one arm. But mostly shows were giving the hook.
This is back when shows were enjoyable to watch and people had class. They actually thanked the audience at the end, and networks would actually let shows complete from start to finish without ending them prematurely, leaving the audience with no resolve or ending as if the series never existed.
Back then just as today shows end prematurely all the time.... those kind of nostalgia comments without any foundation in reality are really everywhere whenever there is a clip if any old show.
Greatest TV show ever! I'm only 21, so I didn't really see much of it when it originally aired, but growing up, my brother always watched re-runs, so I fell in love with it. This scene makes me so sad. RIP Dan Elcar
I still have memories of watching MacGyver with my grandpa grandpa I was a kid. This show is so wonderful and nostalgic. Kids these days don't know what they're missing.
Ethan Robison (& Meg), did you know Dana Elcar went blind on the show. The producers went above and beyond to help him transition. During the last season he was totally blind. I recall an episode of ET where they showed how they methodically led him through scenes with tape, props, etc. Dana Elcar was worth it. A fine actor.

I felt so sorry for Pete...I can't imagine how hard was for him to live far away from his best friend, specially when he needed the most. Brings me very good childhood memories. RIP, Dana!
Love this scene. Reminds me of saying goodbye to my dad that passed away. Brings memories from watching this show as a kid. And brings a tear to my eye. Wishing I can go back and re live my childhood just to spend more time with my pops.

Spent all my savings on a big Swiss Army Knife when I was 12 I think, way before MacGyver was on over here in the Netherlands. Started carrying it with me everywhere after seeing the first few episodes, kids in school started nicknaming me MacGyver, I felt honored. When this episode aired and I heard his voice over at the end I started crying! 😭 MacGyver has made a profound impact on my life and on who I have become. The Swiss Army knife will remain in my pocket when I get buried!
Shows like this simply aren't made anymore; turn on the TV today and all I see is so called "reality" crap about loudmouths in kitchens, wannabe singers who win a singing contest when they aren't even a good singer, and dancing competitions with celebrities in need of a more camera time on themselves to revive a fading career. I wish the networks would come up with actual original shows again. And thank YOU, Richard Dean Anderson.

I'm about 14 years younger than RDA, wow did I learn so much from him, loved the show and, since I'm retired now, every Thursday on Heroes and icons I get to watch 5 episodes of Macgyver, I try to never miss it and still to this day.. and still have my Swiss army knife i bought 35 years ago
Goodbye is so sad and it's hurting. I've been watched Mcgyver for years, thanks that his Mcgyver episode are playing again at meTV. There is another version of Macgyver but I don't like it, they're trying to immitate the original, and it look like stupid for me! No one can ever do what the real Mcgyver is doing.. Thanks Mcgyver! how much nostalgia for a show masterpiece that can never be redone again and exactly like those years that will never come back .... Great is his originality, his genius, and we all carry him in our hearts
i watched every single episode of macgyver too. macgyver touched me on mental and spritual level. with him being the humanitarian that he is. it always made me feel good looking up to him. i had many of my family members die including my dad. But one episode that piqued my interest in particular was passages where macgyvers grandfather dies. it also made me feel that of my grandfather when he died i cried for that moment realizing how much i missed him and all the memories he brought me.
The episode is called "Passages" and for me it was also emotionally and spiritually strong because I was doing mourning for the death of my grandmother and it was my 15 years. It is one of the episodes that I love the most.
2019 here... Nostalgia, I grew up watching this, such an awesome and irreplaceable show... Thank you for showing this clip I dunno how did I end up here... They don't do series like this anymore just a bunch senseless reality TV.
There's a blooper roll from "Stargate SG-1" (somewhere on RU-vid) that shows Amanda Tapping and Richard Dean Anderson filming a scene where their characters are in a dangerous situation, and she goes *way* off-script by complaining that he's MacGyver, fer cryin' out loud, so he ought to be able to whip up some kind of solution to the problem... (RDA totally loses it while she just keeps going... It's worth looking for!)
The episode was "Solitudes" if I remember correctly. Also, in the Pilot, Carter makes a reference to "Macgyvering the dialing computer." O'Neill rolls his eyes at it.
Still remember that particular night. I was 10years old. I cried my heart out that night. Next day at school we were all sad.... Love you macgyver 💚💚 for giving me a happy childhood.

i was lucky that i grew up in the 80s with shows like this one. My faves are Macgyver of course, Miami Vice, Moonlighting and Simon and Simon. Was a great decade for TV back then. They just dont make them like this anymore.
