Wow, three lessons in less than a week. Thank you professor! This is the only place on Internet where common people like us can learn such things. This channel is invaluable. By the way. I've had a question for very long time. When you created this channel, was it mainly for teaching your students and maybe offering them review lessons or did you already had in mind that many other people like us would be interested? Why exactly did you create this channel? I'm asking just because I can see that filming and editing is a huge work, and to me it's just amazing that a true expert like you would give to the world such extremely detailed lessons which require hours of preparation and work.

Your experience with this procedure almost mirrors mine when removing it for the first time. Getting the car positioned just right may as well be an act of Congress. VERY difficult, and can be made worse if you have an older lift with less arm flexibility. Some old lifts with two stage arms can't even lift these. The coolant clips are a pain, and I fear how difficult they will be to remove with some dirt and grime built up. The diagram you found from the supplier is very helpful looks like. I think the offset center of gravity is why the Ford lift table is HUGE. The lift surface is probably 4 feet by 5 feet, and the lift itself weighs something like 800 pounds. Very heavy duty, it was overbuilt to work for future larger packs in upcoming vehicles.
@WeberAuto

Thanks for the feedback Jake. I do wish I had the larger lift table; the center of gravity would not be an issue.

My wife is probably watching Survivor or something and thinks I'm crazy for wanting to learn all I can before I get my Ford Lightning ! I sure hope some tech videos of the Ford Lightning will be coming ! Are the cels 4680's ? or a completely different type
@jeremyventurino9481
@jeremyventurino9481 Год назад
Currently, only Tesla is using 4680 cells as far as I know. Tesla has their tabless dry electrode 4680, and Panasonic is making a 5-tab wet electrode version. These Ford cells are similar to the Nissan leaf, Chevy bolt etc. But the chemistry is different.
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto Год назад

@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 Год назад
"4680" is a just a size of cylindrical cell (46 millimetres in diameter by 80 millimetres long). Most EV manufacturers do not use cylindrical cells at all - as in this vehicle, they use rectangular pouch cells that are stacked into rectangular boxes (modules).

Very informative, looking forward to the rest of the series, do you know which contactors are sticking in the ford recall, as ford says to avoid repeated hard acceleration, and to avoid dc fast charging while waiting for the software fix. Professor Kelly Thank you! Did I miss how to drain the coolant loops? I thought I watched all the way to the end of part 2. And I'm only 25 minutes into part 3. I'd suspect coolant changes would be a maintenance item, that could be done at home with a Mitivac air vacuum filler system? As a engineer not in the automotive field, thanks for explaining the scientific detail of how and why your doing each step of the process.
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto Год назад
Good catch. I forgot to video disconnecting the hoses at the front of the battery. Disconnecting the two battery coolant hoses at the front of the battery drains the battery coolant expansion tank. Disconnecting the two rear inverter coolant hoses at the front or rear of the battery housing drains the motor electronics coolant expansion tank. I use the Mityvac vacuum refilling system, it works well. I will demonstrate it in a future video after reinstalling the battery. Thanks for watching

HI John you were taking about how hard it was to position the car with the special adaptor I was thinking why don't you use 4 wheel jack dolly some are mechanical and others are hydraulic in my shop I have 2 of them but for your application you would need 4 of them I use them to lift the front end of car that are too low for me to get on my lift but for u it would be nice so you can move the car in all direction even if the car is in park plus it would lift the car a bit more so it would make it easier to put the adaptor on the body of the car plus it's nice to use those dolly if a car is broken or you want to push it against a wall to save space in the work shop or like if you have a car with a bad air suspension and the car is too low to get it on a lift especially a car.

Professor Kelly, I hope you don’t mind me asking you a question off topic from your video. I’m a full time wheelchair user and am looking at getting a new BraunAbility side entry XT power ramp van (I transfer from my wheelchair to the van seat). But, I need to be able to pull a small trailer (Scoota Trailer, 1,000 lbs GVWR). I’m wanting to get a 2021/2022 Toyota Sienna hybrid van. The BraunAbility website states that although they don’t sell them with a tow package you can have a Toyota dealership install one once you purchase the van. My local Toyota dealer has said they will install it for me if I get the Sienna and it’s possible. However, my local mobility dealer doesn’t recommend pulling a trailer with the BraunAbility converted Toyota Sienna, but isn’t giving me a reason other than BraunAbility doesn’t sell them with it being installed. If I don’t get the Sienna my next choice would be a Chrysler Pacifica as BraunAbility does sell them with the trailer hitch installed. However, their are many reason on why I think the Sienna would be a better vehicle for me. You know the eCVT Toyota uses very well and being a fellow wheelchair user I’m hoping you are familiar with the BraunAbility side entry minivan conversions. Do you think it would be ok to pull a small trailer with the BraunAbility converted Toyota Sienna or should I look at the Pacifica?
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto Год назад
Hi Dan, I drive a 2020 Sienna van (Braunability side entry conversion). I like the Sienna because it has the tallest roof and widest opening. I also like the reliability of Toyota products. I do not know if a Toyota trailer hitch will bolt on to a converted van. You may need to get a custom hitch manufactured. Best wishes.

Really interesting tear down. I’ve read that there is a weakness in the battery that prevents more than 5 seconds at full power. Is this something you have identified during the tear down? I’d be interested to hear your view on this issue.
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto Год назад
The Mach-E GT has a nominal rating for the fuses of 630A (Rear Motor) and 350A (Front Motor). They are pushing the limits with a current draw of 1050 amps during full acceleration. I suspect the fuse sizes, contactor sizes, and maximum allowed current needed to be better calibrated to avoid overheating the contactors (A possible reason for the five-second power limit). I will be surprised if the junction block with contactors and fuses gets replaced due to the recall for the contactor issue.

Professor, I’m curious what the reasoning is for buying the particular trim of the vehicles you purchase. With the model S you have, I believe it is the highest trim (Performance dual motor). The Mach-E is the GT model. I’m just curious why the college purchase these more expensive models, vs something like the Mach-E4x or the Model S long range. I can understand wanting to get the big battery, dual motor versions, but why the performance models? Thanks for another great video!

you are my favorite EV specialist I would like to know what is your opinion on battery pack serviceability of Tesla vs Ford, VW ,Audi,Porsche, Hundai, KIA etc... especially the new 4680 cell form factor I would like you if you can make a video on this topic I think it really important when the cars are going to be older and any replacement of any component could be done even used parts like contactor BMS modules etc. but if the battery is made like Tesla you can't even repurposed batteries for solar or any other EV other than using the complete battery pack are you going to get a VW ID4 ? . the way the top cover is removed compared to the top cover of the new Tesla pack see Munro live it's one of the last video it totally a disaster I don't like it.

Thank you very much. I like the possibility of some type of service work on the battery. Tesla may have a good thing there or not; time will tell.

Professor, I have a question. Are these batteries officially serviceable for repairs? Let's say a cell goes bad and the car tells me to contact a Ford dealership for repair. Would they change just the bad cell, the entire module or even the whole battery? And what about the contractors or the battery management module? I'm asking because I frequently hear that battery problems in electric vehicles often requires (officially) a full battery swap. But the inside of a battery is so modular that it seems fairly easy to swap just the faulty component.
@WeberAuto
@WeberAuto Год назад
Any of the 12 battery modules can be changed, same with the junction block (with contactors) and the BMS. My next video will cover those topics.
@jeremyventurino9481
@jeremyventurino9481 Год назад
Yep, there's a battery balancing procedure that may need to be performed. Unlike the Tesla packs, which are a lot less repairable. The structural battery in the new Tesla model y isn't repairable at all.

@@WeberAuto So then its possible to change any individule cells that may be bad by removing the module & testing each cell. Thats the key to keeping a EV affordable.

@@mikemiller659 Tesla are aiming to make 20 million/yr by 2030. No way to do that with traditional manufacturing and repair perceptions. Drivers in this crisis are lower cost by design and ease of manufacturing. This runs through all modern manufacturing technologies. Tesla have found modules to be redundant given the low rate of pack failures. In the third row interviews musk talked about the Roadster needing modules because of nascent battery technology and from then on it went unchallenged until the Model Y.

This couldn't be more different from a Tesla battery pack, especially the structural 4680 pack that Munro is dissecting, where everything is glued together with polyurethane. Also the new Model S/X battery, which has none of the open space seen in the Ford's pack.
@Miata822
@Miata822 Год назад
This is true. Tesla packs are notoriously difficult or even impossible to service. That makes them effectivly disposable. Unfortunate. Ford by design intent made their pack easy to service. In the event of a single failed cell a pack can be replaced without replacing the whole battery. GM has gone one step further, making the pack BMS reprogrammable so that cells could be replaced with some unknown future chemistry to prolong the life of the vehicle. Tesla's disposable batteries should be cause for investors and owners to complain. It is little different from Apple's new phones where battery replacement is prohibited by the phone's software.
@ouch1011
@ouch1011 Год назад
@@Miata822 amen! On the Tesla battery, if a single 4680 cell goes bad, the entire multi-thousand dollar battery has to be scrapped and replaced. Absolutely no serviceability. Almost every other manufacturer splits the battery into smaller, serviceable modules so that just the failed module can be replaced for a far less expensive and wasteful repair. Tesla forces you to replace the entire thing.

Why? It's somewhat of a PITA to get things out but so is changing the spark plugs of your typical FWD 6 cylinder IC engine. I suspect that when these cars age, "Good Old Boys" will simply "mix & match" cells to balance out the battery and replace the bad or "weak" cells. The car will not be as good as new but still have plenty of zip but less range.
