I never , ever heard about doing those little diagonal stitches on the corners ! Wow ! What a difference. Also on curves I was stitching WAY too fast. Boy ! There’s nothing like good knowledge and instruction. Aren’t we lucky to live in a time when we can so easily learn from one another’s experience and know-how instead of the trial and error of winging it on your own ? This was the best tutorial explaining all the dynamics as well as great close up camera work! Last week I also learned (& had no idea before) that using embroidery thread like for machine embroidery to sew a satin stitch was a good option in contrast to using sewing thread. I am excited to practice incorporating your advice and experiment with different thread to do the satin stitch with. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. that is so funny....when I hear my own voice I immediately think ewwwww....hahahaa. I am so glad that showing the close-ups was helpful! I like using embroidery thread in my regular sewing machine. It has opened a whole new color range of options for me as I have a ton of it hahaa. I like the sheen of it, it really stands out. It's a bit thinner than my all purpose thread so many times I have to adjust my settings differently (closer together).
This video was so very helpful to me. I am watching this after ruining a few applique projects. But hopefully now I'll do better with your tips and tricks. So grateful for the knowledge you have imparted here.
Wow! I learned so much from you in this video! Thank you for your great tips! I would like to share something I learned and is not how I anchor my starting thread. Instead of pulling my top thread to the back I now pull it forward under the pressure foot and to the front; and as I stitch it, I guide it under the satin stitch for an inch or two which anchors it under and just clip any excess. I then only have the bobbin thread to cut.
Thank you so much Marian! I really like the idea of pulling the top thread forward and stitching over it. In projects like my quilts that get washed I really try to remember to do that......it's a habit I'd really like to get set in my head. Most of the time I forget to do it hahaaa.

Thank you for taking the time to record this. Good tutorial for beginners, and more advanced quilters. It's nice to have a visual to come back to if one forgets. LOL. I finished an 18 square, 23 owl applique quilt in December and had every one of these shapes to tackle for the multi-pieced owls. The triangle, 1 inch owl beaks, were the most difficult. I used both of your examples for those small pieces, depending on my mood at the time. 😊

I enjoyed this tutorial on satin stitch. I have been using an open toe foot to do my Hawaiian Style Applique but had trouble with the concave turns you explain the marking on your foot and I checked my out . What a difference this made for me to keep it straight. Also how you explain which way the needle should be.
Thank you for these great tips. I avoid doing applique unless it is in machine embroidery because I can never get my stitches to look right. Hopefully with your guidance I can do a better job.
I'll tell you, the embroidery machine does such a PERFECT stitch.....that I haven't seen many people in this world that could do it anywhere close to that hahaha.....and I think we get so used to seeing the satin stitch from the embroidery machine that when we do it ourselves, it's easy to be disappointed. That's one reason I'm always working to get better and better....ONE DAY I want my satin stitch to look like the embroidery machine did it hahahaaa

Great video! Thanks for posting. The techniques you showed for curves and outside corners all worked well. I discovered one piece of the puzzle missing: inside right angles. Or, inside angles, inside corners in general. So if you wanted to applique a cutout shaped like a star or a cross, how do you make those turns?
I'm gonna try the same technique as the outside corners: doing 2-3 stitches at a 45 degree angle to fill in the corner before continuing with the the next edge. I'll bet that's the solution!!🖖😁
I acrtually like the triangle that is the same width all the way around. Thank you for this, Lisa. I just watched Patrick Lose showing how he stitches applique. Good grief! The video was terrible. The viewer couldn't see anythng he was doing. Your demonstration is excellent. You're a terrific teacher. BTW, my sports quilts turned out really well using your grid method. Hi Tina, most of the time I use a medium or lightweight tear away stabilizer. If stitching clothing or something really dense I'll use a cutaway stabilizer. Keeps the stitches pretty and prevents a lot of puckering.

Hi Lisa, Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video. I have never done applique before and after watching your "how to" I am now practicing. I am having the most trouble on the corners...I turn it like you showed and take a few stitches but then once I turn it to go straight again it gets all bunched up and wont move forward...any suggestions?
Hey Colleen :) Ok, so first, are you using a stabilizer under your work? Second, you may want to try increasing your stitch length. It sounds to me like what happens to me when my stitches are to close together for the size needle and thread I'm using. Try increasing a step or two....try this and let me know.
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead thanks for the tips. I worked on it for about 4 hours last night. Got the circle and square down fairly well...now just really having difficulty with the sharp corners like on the crescent shape and triangles. Yes, I am using a stabilizer (a phone book page folded over and seems to work really well) It just my turning..figuring how much to turn etc. For everyone 1 do okish...there are atleast 4 or 5 very bad ones 😂😂. Do u use the same size on a square or circle as u would on a triangle or crescent shape? On the video it doesnt really mention if u change stitch sizes based on the shape..of course except for the last triangle you demo with changing stitching coming in to corners.
Hi Alicia, it changes from project to project, and from thread to thread. I hardly ever use the same setting twice lol. What I like to do after picking the thread that I want to use is......grab some scraps and test out the satin stitch. Then you can adjust how wide you want it to be and also how close together you want the stitches to be, before you ever bring in your work :)
Each time I do a satin stitch on applique I change my settings for the desired look I am going for. Sometimes I like a thinner finished stitch and sometimes I like it to be wider. I think it's a good idea to make that determination before stitching your project...pull over some scraps and play with the settings and stitches to find the look you want to achieve before bringing in your work.
Hi Lisa! Do you know what could be causing my satin stitches to not have clean lines? I’ve tried adjusting bobbin tension and upper thread tension and my satin stitches are very messy looking. Thank you in advance!
Hi Zaida, on my Singer Patchwork machine I have to use a zigzag stitch that's really close together to get a satin stitch, however on my Juki there is a satin stitch setting :)
I think your Velcro frayed, it frays easily when cut. This happened to me once. You can use fray check or quickly put a lighter to the edges that will keep it from coming apart
Hi Irene.........your width and stitch length is ALWAYS going to change from project to project, from thread to thread and should be tested before bringing in your work.
Sorry, but had to hit "dislike" on this. At 12:15 you come right to the point of that crescent shape - the very part where I wanted to see how it was done, then you stopped and said "hope you find that useful" WITHOUT showing how you did the point. Honestly, what was even the "point" of that??
As much as I respect your feedback, I would like to say that at the point in the video that you mentioned, the purpose of that clip was concave curves, not points. I covered points in other parts of this video HOWEVER, after 3 years have gone by, I like to think that my video skills have improved and now I show much more detail. I am really glad that RU-vid doesn't show the number of dislikes any longer, as it is very discouraging for content creators who are just trying to share and help others with free classes. I'm also glad that RU-vid doesn't see dislikes as a negative attribute, and actually counts it as engagement on your video which is a good thing.
