Animating Abstract Expressionism through a Digital Pop Art Lens.
My work delves into the heart of abstract expressionism, reimagining its core principles through animation. Mark-making, color theory, and the interplay between dense textures and vibrant hues come alive. it bridges the gap between the gestural dynamism of action painting and the contemplative serenity of color field painting. Pollock’s energetic drips and Rothko’s meditative rectangles find new life in an animated ballet, where texture and color intertwine with fluid grace. However, a crucial twist emerges: the spontaneity and immediacy of animation disrupts the traditional, carefully considered process or in the act action. Each frame exists solely in relation to the next, creating a mesmerizing dance of form and colour. It has more akin to Pollock’s action, than Rothko’s and Newman’s slow burning layered style or Clifford Still and Fritz Bullman’s measured style to find harmony and balance in the weight of form against colour. Subtle yet crucial variations between frames echo the vast databases used to train AI systems, prompting reflection on the role of technology in shaping our perception of the world. This exploration through animation is not an attempt to replace static masterpieces, but rather to expand the dialogue. By marrying the expressive power of abstract expressionism with the immediacy of pop art and the dynamic possibilities of animation, I strive to create captivating visual experiences that provoke thought, ignite emotion, and challenge our conventional ways of seeing the world.
