Machines Taught Me To Read In The 1950s

The concept of teaching machines has been around a while. The idea being that students could learn by themselves without teachers and that it might actually make things better. In the 1950s, teaching machines sounded like they were going to be a big deal and this "documentary" was made to help parents understand how they could help students learn better. In the 1950s, teaching machines became very popular as individual instruction devices and by 1959, they were considered one of the “hottest items among the nation’s self-education enterprises.” Teaching machines provided students with instant feedback, self pacing, and active responses.
You will see timecode and the name MacDonald supered on this film clip. When I was collecting this material 40 years ago, MacDonald was the person that I went to because he had collected thousands of 16mm films. Unfortunately put his logo and timecode on all the clips he gave to me. He has passed on now but I still have these wonderful clips and this one fascinates me because being dyslexic, I needed machines As a high school student to help me learn how to read and not skip words. One of the machines taught me "speed reading". Basically skimming. I still do this today when I am reading an article in a magazine. More often than not, I get the gist of it but on occasion, I get it completely wrong. My subscribers know that I oftentimes misspell words because of my dyslexia.

Tech young and old has helped people even throughout generations. I have such reading and writings issues but use tech to solve problems like that. Dictation apps and self reading programs have helped in the interim yet I'd love to get that kind of independence and self esteem of doing it myself.

Thanks for showing this very interesting video. I looked up teaching machines and found that the first one was made in the 1920s. I never really thought of them being around in the 1950s. Anything that helps someone learn better is good. I'm sure some students need a different way to learn. With the amount of comments alone you read every day you would need to use speed reading.

In ‘63, 3rd grade, I had to use a card reading “teaching machine” that limited the view of printed text to a portion of one line at a time. Too bad, unbeknownst to the teachers, I was too nearsighted to make out the letters. I was labeled as lazy and punished for my “lack of effort.” --- “In its function, the power to punish is not essentially different from that of curing or educating.” ~ Michel Foucault

You’re not the only one with dyslexia David. I believe I have some form of it. Although I was never diagnosed specifically with dyslexia, I did have trouble learning to read. And spelling is still very difficult for me. Before computers and spellcheck, I always used to carry a little pocket dictionary around with me, because I was very conscientious about spelling correctly. To this day I work on spelling. So I must truly have some difficulty, if after all this time, I’m still unsure about certain spellings. To this day I still consider myself a slow reader. Maybe some of this is caused by OCD habits? I’m not sure. But, despite difficulty in reading and spelling, I have always had good comprehension, and writing ability. I’m not saying I’m a genius in these areas, but I’ve always been at least average or better than average. And I have always had a strong vocabulary, and am very good with the meaning of words. And I score high on my verbal IQ! Go figure. But verbal, is different than reading and spelling I guess. I feel like spelling is my Achilles’ heel. It’s an inspiration to know that people like you are dyslexic. It certainly doesn’t make a person unintelligent. There are many people of great knowledge and achievement who, surprisingly, are dyslexic.

I recall that I once made a big deal out of a wrong word in one of your headlines, David. Now that I know this, let me say I am sorry, and that I have learned from this to be more patient and understanding. Seeing a typo or goof should not be an opportunity to pounce on it to appear clever. It's really a calling to be more respectful to someone, and to realize they may have a situation we did not realize. You are a great contributor to our lives, just as you are.

@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker There are plenty of people who call their current spouse the name of the ex. It doesn't require dyslexia. ... @@geographicoddity9444 tried it didnt help , you have to see the numbers correctly on the paper to calculate & 71 is way different than 17, hehe esp when its more than two numbers. the matrix screen with the numbers changing is a good example of how i see numbers.
@Lyndanet
@Lyndanet 2 года назад
@@Telenaus That sounds frustrating and confusing ! I’m guessing but you might have learned to calculate vertically and that might be causing the problem … I’d advise using a calculator and doing each part of a problem isolated on small strips of paper horizontally it’s tedious but a different perspective.What helped me personally was studying the actual origin of numbers (as they once were used literally ) a lot like letters are in words today. When I saw them as isolated “ objects” with different meanings I confused them less and less until I developed better math skills . That might not work for you but still …I encourage you to be confident that there’s a way out there maybe right now it might not be apparent but you’re search might just inspire you or someone else to find one .

Fascinating material, I’m sure it was helpful in dyslexia cases and low memory retention.. there was a LOT they got wrong in the 50s, but at least they were trying to address real problems. Where it was misused, it pressured the student to fit into social roles and patterns. In time we may find an AI that has enough learning ability to Taylor the education to the student…but they aren’t there yet. I was unaware that you made use of early teaching machines…and clearly benefitted from them. The current move is to start exposing the child to appropriate material while still in the womb, playing classical music so the child will be drawn toward that kind of music. Getting the child classes at an early age so they could be composing by 10. It will be interesting to see how this system morphs with the passage of time. Thank you David, for continually reminding of where we have been, with a view toward shaping where we go next.🖤🇨🇦

I used a computer to learn to read, or rather learn the words rather then learn to read as learning to read didn't work that well for me. Basically a word was put on the screen with a blue background (just something I remember), the computer said the word and I had to repeat it aloud. Then I set a time which the word was shown at and I said the word aloud. Decreased the time and said it aloud and so on until the time was low enough to go on to the next word. Did this for 6 years and was able to read decently. Still can't read text that is too quick, like subtitles for videos where I don't understand the language. For videos where I don't understand the language I basically read a few select words that I deem more important, the fill-in words I can guess. Doesn't work great but can often at least get an understanding of it. Thankfully living in Sweden , SVT is very good when it comes to subtitles as they are rather slow. Worst I've come across is probably text from USA, where it's as fast as the people are talking, faster than I think any human can read (at least it seems impossible for me) which seems a bit odd. Other channels and networks in Sweden are also significantly worse when it comes to subtitles. RU-vid videos are usually horrible and pretty much pointless for me to have on, I have to pause every sentence or it's impossible for me to even read a 2-3 words.

I think the ideas those early educational planners had were probably more or less valid, just incredibly simplistic and un-informed by today's standards. It appears they were relying on concepts of planning out lessons in advance, and to a much greater degree than in paper-based lessons-which were, themselves, usually highly planned. A lot of learning requires planning, but now we have so many resources available that the planning can be much more advanced, and can draw on expertise available from all over the World.
