Hi Max, Me again. As us oldies know there is another way of cutting a thread up to a shoulder. The old upside down in reverse method. I know we can do it conventionally, but the younguns might never have seen this method. Turn the tool upside down set on centre height, set up the leadscrew as required. set a dead stop so the tool is just off the shoulder run the machine in reverse and you are cutting a right hand thread away from the shoulder. A lot safer for the newbies or hobby shop guys that don't get a lot of practice. Best wishes, Mal.
@melgross
@melgross 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, I’ve done that. But it just takes a bit of practice to pull up quick. You get used to it.

I just don't like the backwards method , does not come natural to me ! Some lathes have a shocking half nut feel & some have a good one , If you have any hiccup with engagement , the part is scrapped before you realise . 👍

Where is the half nut? On the machine????? Or- The person operating it!!!

@@swanvalleymachineshop I've seen a lot of 'pros' to the method of threading in reverse; I appreciate hearing a 'con'. Helpful to have that perspective to consider!

G'day Max . Lots of material came off, but in the end the nut fitted very nicely & fitted right up on the shoulder. & yes the commenters talked about reverse cutting threads etc. As we know it's what we are comfortable at the time, + doing it the normal way, you have more control of the backlash taking up before thread is cut. Overall a very good series, & yep, You Did It Your Way 🎉😊

I was taught to put the lathe in reverse which should also reverse the feed and then to cut from the shoulder out. That then avoids crashing Into the narrow thread relief and the shoulder. This is particularly useful on a more limited lathe (driven, in my case, by someone with limited skills).
@swanvalleymachineshop

Lol , i don't do the back to front threads . Too easy to scrap the part . 👍

@@swanvalleymachineshop Hi Max, Could you explain why there is more danger of scrapping the part if you cut the thread from the headstock out. I would have thought the reverse was true but I trust your wisdom.
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 10 месяцев назад
@@gillywild If you have the slightest miss engagement with the half nuts , you will de pitch the thread before you see it . Also not all threads allow for a thread relief to start from . Metric thread on an imperial leadscrew , upside down threading takes 3 times as long to line the tool up . I might do a video on it .👍

Max, great video. Another solution is to run your lathe in reverse, flip the cutter upside down (change to left handed one) and then you can cut the threads from the shoulder out with zero chance of a crash. Your ability to retract the cutter at the last moment is amazing. I suspect that I would never be able to pull that off.
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 10 месяцев назад
Cheers Rob . I can see i may have to do a video to reveal the true down sides of this backwards threading caper ! Ask Joe Pie to cut a metric thread with an imperial leadscrew , to a shoulder with no thread relief ! 👍👍👍

A metric thread & smaller lathe could have been another method. Nice variable gearbox could only dream for. Screwcutting is a prerequisite and there is processes that make the thread squaring, finish cuts and bevel. Solid milling spindle is what seperates the men from the boys. Excessive wear on Bridgeport with tank tracks is not recommended.

Totally agree with you on all fronts mentioned below and on the video. Especially about time it takes to make these one-off parts. In regards threading to a relief, I set up an indicator for the stop point and use the brake to stop there. What do you think?
@swanvalleymachineshop
@swanvalleymachineshop 10 месяцев назад
That's the way to go if you have a brake . None of my machines except the JFMT lathe have brakes . Come to think of it , i have never used a lathe before that has a foot brake ! Reverse on the clutch has been the closest thing ! 👍
@kelvinmears2759
@kelvinmears2759 10 месяцев назад
@@swanvalleymachineshop I don't think I would not have a brake, largely coz it is comfortable for me for thread cutting. Hi Max, is there a reason that you don.t thread in reverse?
@swanvalleymachineshop

Yes . 1, it does not come naturally to me . 2 , if you have a mis engagement , you will most likely scrap the part . 3 , If you have to keep the half nuts engaged , it takes a lot longer , 4, if you are not allowed to have a thread relief , you are screwed ! 👍👍👍
