In this video I make some tooling for my hossfeld #2 bender out of RailRoad track (press brake die ?). There's some Machining, Some Heat treating, and some bending. What more do you want?
These are Only things from amazon that I personally like and buy for my own shop.
Flex Zilla retractable extention cord reel----- amzn.to/3ew4dce ----- Awesome tool to have I have 2. Theyre good quality but expensive (worth it in my opinon)
40-Pc wire wheel brushes for drill or die grinder----- amzn.to/3bajcX6 ----- Good selection of various wire wheels and theyre cheap.
LocTite 603----- amzn.to/3tuT8wn ----- I mean its loctite not much to say works great
Metabo flat head grinder----- amzn.to/3tzRadX ----- Metabo flat head grinder best of the best German made angle grinder for getting in tight spots ( I know the price sucks)
Dykem layout fluid 2 pack------- amzn.to/3etNXbK ----- blue layout fluid 2 pack (its alittle cheaper than buying 1)
Markal Pro holder starter kit----- amzn.to/3hcago7 ----- This is the silver streak pencil you always see on my channel for laying out steel I love it (expensive but all the good stuff is)
Starrett automatic center punch----- amzn.to/3y74YAq ------ Awesome starrett auto center punch that you see in my vids love it best there is
Scotch brite deburring wheel----- amzn.to/33r8Td3 ----- this is the bench grinder wheel that I love puts almost mirror finish on steel and deburrs also lasts a long time ( make sure you get the right arbor size)
Precision twist drill index----- amzn.to/3ergxum ------this is the 115 piece drill index you see on my channel all the time......they have been great for me and they arent chinese
Walter flap discs----- amzn.to/3hatCd8 -----these are the flap discs you see on all my grinders. they are the best there are german made and trimable for longer use the only kind i use ( but very expensive)
Noga mister------ amzn.to/3h86P1L ----- This the little noga mister that I use on my mill it works well for the bridgeport
BXA tool post ------ amzn.to/2T0rBGw ------ this is the quick change toolpost and tool holders set (size BXA) that i bought for my lathe its chinese but good quality I have been very happy with it
Racheting tap handle -------- amzn.to/3wSJRAm ------ this is the racheting tap handle you see me use all the time, I bought mine at harbor frieght originally but theyre chinese made and are identical probbably made in the same factory

Hey just built a bulldozer die myself. I watched this video must have been a dozen times by now. The only thing I was lacking was a milling machine. Just got one for a song and a dance, and man it's opened so many doors, I got so much to learn on it. Thanks for the sweet videos.

Oh thanks so much for making my RU-vid videos look like complete amateur rubbish. I thought the beginning of your video was an ad and then near shit myself laughing when you showed what you were doing and dropped the camera 😂. Like Charles Plowman below I have just picked up my first milling machine, a BP clone, and realise how much I have to learn. Videos like yours really help to show what and how things can be done and what a skilled operator can achieve. It’s so much better than anything you can get from reading books. Thanks so much. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Finally, a YT guy that knows enough about heat treating to teach his followers. A common file can get you by, a set of hardness testing files is better, but a Rockwell tester is best. And,,, paying the price and floor space tells us West Weld is committed to quality. I haven't looked, but I bet used Rockwell testers are cheap and plentiful. Get one!

Pre CWR, rail is homogeneous and it’s the type you want for machining. Continuous Welded Rail has a much, much tougher ball (Top) with more carbon, molybdenum and vanadium in it. The web and foot is more akin to mild steel to be a bit more forgiving under load and wild temperature fluctuations. Remember, these are 7 to 15 mile long pieces of continuous rail and both side are never the same length. Why do I know this? I’ve been running trains on it for 20 years now.

Pretty cool man, Ive found railroad track to be around 1070 steel with added manganese, which helps with hardening a little bit. You want to take it a little above non magnetic tho, otherwise you wont get full hardness out of it. I usually let it soak 10-15 seconds more past the non magnetic temp, then quench it in oil. I know you can quench that stuff in water also, but I dont need the stuff that hard usually, lol.
@westweld
@westweld 3 года назад
Thanks Chirpy......I didnt show on camera but I tried heat treating that thing like 4 times at different Temps I just couldn't get it above 45 but honestly I'm pretty happy with that.....makes it relatively useful, super tough too. Im gonna look up 1070 and see what the difference is.

I love machining railroad tracks. It is hard - yes, but after i changed to the right tools, i can make som heavy cuts on it. I have produced alot of anvils and hammers out of the material. On my mill i can easily make a 4mm cut with a 80mm cutter. I have also had some that i putt in the 4-jaw on the lathe, and then turned the head on the hammer round. No problem with the right tools. New subscription here, like the previous posts thought that you have a great show with a good mix of music and video. I’d love a hossfield bender with the trinkets of course, however I don’t have the hossfield money, so I have a cheap Chinese typical aftermarket bender. Great attachment btw on your workmanship, spot on workmanship too. Anyway all the very best wishes for the future…Phil 🇬🇧

Thanks Phil! I'm glad you liked it....I got the bender for a steal on Craigslist (got lucky). See you on the next one

Your are right its on my long list......I like to think long and hard before I permanently mount somthing to the floor because as soon as I do I'll inevitably have to move it

A power feed on that X axis will do wonders for your arms, they are about $150, well worth it

I think the z axis will come first
