You made it all the way to Machu Picchu in Peru and now all that's left is to have the most epic visit to the lost Incan city! In this vlog we take you around this world wonder and share 12 travel tips that you need to know before your visit to help make sure it is everything you always dreamed of!
Something you will need to prepare for your trip to Machu Picchu (and all of Peru for that matter) is the right clothing, and we recommend getting some 100% alpaca wool items from Appalachian Gear Company for your adventures! Use our code NICOLEMICO for 10% off your order at appalachiangearcompany.com. We have been LIVING in our All-Paca Fleece Hoodies during our time in Peru; they are seriously incredible!
We have been looking forward to our visit to Machu Picchu for years. We were really curious about how it would measure up against all the hype about this sacred site, and we were relieved to discover it was even better than we thought. From Aguas Calientes we took a bus up to Machu Picchu before the sun was up, because visiting Machu Picchu bright and early is the BEST time of day to see the city (more on that in the video). Our guide Yiyo from Peruvian Paths and Adventures taught us so much about the Incan's who lived here and the people who excavated the site in the 1900s to bring it back to life for the world to continue to enjoy.
We chose to climb Wayna Picchu Mountain as part of our visit to the sacred Incan city and oh man was that an adventure! A section of this hike is nicknamed the "stairs of death" and it is easy to see why! The views of Machu Picchu from the top were incredible, and we were really proud to have made it up this final mountain after hiking the Salkantay trail for the past 4 days!
After our visit to Machu Picchu we hopped on a train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo through the Sacred Valley. People rave about the Sacred Valley, and we quickly discovered why on this train ride. The 1.5 hour ride seemed to end way too quickly, and before we knew it we were saying goodbye to the Sacred Valley and wrapping up our tour of the Salkantay Trek and Machu Picchu.

That sounds like a great trip! After 7 months in various South American countries we can confidently say that Peru is one of the safest places to visit! Of course you have to be a bit careful but it's just like any place you go. The people are very friendly and nice and learning a few Spanish phrases will get you a little better service too. We hope you enjoy the trip and reach out if you have any specific questions about Peru! Don't forget to try a lot of food!

Hello Nicole and Mico, so pleased to learn that you are Canadians... and I gather that you are from Alberta? You two are the very first RU-vidrs to inform us that there's Waynapicchu as well as Machu Picchu to visit/see. Further, you two are the very first couple to alert us as to choosing Route 2 for the best photo sites. My husband and I will be arriving in Machu Picchu in about 10 days, travelling from Lima all the way to Cuzco. We live in Toronto. I understand that once inside Machu Picchu, one could only go one-way, and not be allowed to double back. Although, we would need to circle back to the entrance in order to exit, correct? I love your videos, you are both articulate in your narrative of the places you've visited and what to keep an eye out for. Thanks muchly, keep travelling!
@nicoleandmico

Yes we are Canadians from Alberta and we are glad to hear our videos are reaching out to more Canadians 😁 we're so glad you enjoyed the video! We try our best to share our genuine experience while at the same time give lots of details to help anyone else doing their travel planning. Also we are so excited for your upcoming trip! You're going to have a great time 😊 about the route, yes in general you can only move in one direction but all the routes are loops/circuits so they all lead back to the entrance where the bus originally drops you off. There are lots to see so it's best to go early and take your time. Let us know if you have any questions and we would be happy to help!

A very imformative video! I'm also headed to Peru in a couple of weeks and will be making our way to Machu Picchu. In terms of the hike (also purchased two tickets for Waynapicchu) do you think hiking shoes are necessary? Just trying to plan what footwear is most necessary for the trip. Aside from Machu Picchu, the only other hike is Rainbow Mountain, which seems like sturdy running shoes would do the trick. Thanks!
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
Hey there, it sounds like you are about to have an awesome adventure! Assuming you are not doing the Inca Trail or Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu, then a pair of running shoes/sneakers will be perfect, even for Waynapicchu. Same with the Rainbow Mountains which we easily did in our sneakers.

Once there - can you pick one of the circuits or are they all a different entrance? I bought a ticket for circuit 4 and am trying to find out if it is possible to do 1 or 2.
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
Thank you so much, we are glad you enjoyed 🤗 We purchase our tickets in advance through the official government website. We purchased two tickets: one for the general Machu Picchu site (called Llaqta de Machu Picchu on the website) and then a second ticket for Waynapichu. The first ticket for the general site is good for any circuit and is just something you tell them when you pass the entrance booth (it's the same entrance for all circuits). We highly recommend doing Circuit 2 as it passed through all the best photo sites! If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask 😊 we are always happy to help! 👍

@@nicoleandmico hi, quick question, did you buy your second tickets for waynapichu once you were there? or did you buy it together--the machu picchu + waynapichu. i went to the website you provided, but i don't see how i can buy the waynapichu alone. thanks!
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
We bought both tickets at the same time prior to arriving in Machu Picchu. You have to select the option that gives you "Circuit 4+Waynapicchu". It's written thus way because you essentially have to follow Circuit 4 in order to get to the trailhead of Waynapicchu.
@itsgabed

Great video! I'm wondering if you bought your tickets there at the entrance or if you got them in advance. If online, which site? It looks like you got them when you got there but want to make sure. I'm not sure if it's possible for them to sell out in person but online it looks like that's the case. Thanks!
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
We highly recommend getting them online and well in advance (at least a month) as they do sell out, especially the good times. They only let a certain amount of people on the mountain a day (I think it was around 4000) so once they are gone, you can't get any more tickets, online or in person. We bought our tickets directly from the official government website which is machupicchu.gob.pe You'll know that it's the official website as it says Peru Ministerio de Cultura at the top. There are many other 3rd party websites so just make sure you're on the official one. We hope this helps!

Or would i have to wait until that Time? Id hate to hike there then wait all day to get in ya know? Thanks in advanced for any information.
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
Hey there! Thanks so much for the feedback on the video, it's great to hear you enjoyed it. We both think that you will have issues entering Machu Picchu earlier than your ticket is for. We found the staff to be quite strict about things during our visit and know they are using the entry times as a method of staggering visits for covid safety. We could definitely be wrong though because we didn't try entering at a time different than our ticket, so we haven't given it a go ourselves. It might be worth your while to join a few facebook groups for traveling in Peru or South America and ask this same question in the group. I bet someone on there will have tried to get in early and can share their experience with you. We have found Facebook groups to be a great resource for detailed questions like this!

Hi Nicole and Mico. I am visiting Peru next month and intend to go to Machu Picchu. However, I am reading about many tourists that are unable to buy tickets. Or that there is going to be a strike. Would you know how we can best secure the tickets to Machu Picchu so as not to miss the opportunity to visit it.
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
Hi there, that's a great question. We have been hearing that there are more potential strikes coming as well. Unfortunately, from what we heard when we were at Machu Picchu, it really is just a matter of timing. However, it doesn't seem like Machu Picchu closes when there are strikes, but the trains are unable to operate so many people can't get there. To ensure you can get there, you could either hike or plan to take a van to Hydroelectrica. If you take a van to Hydroelectrica you will still have to walk about 10km along the train tracks to get to Aguas Calientes. It is a long and boring walk, but it is easy. I would also suggest that if you are able to use a tour agency to book your tickets through and organize transport to Machu Picchu/ get a guide for Machu Picchu, I bet they will be very helpful to organize alternative transport if your train gets canceled. We used Peruvian Paths and Adventures for our trek and loved them!

The company we have booked with only allows us to do circuit 4 with the Waynapicchu included ticket! Thanks for all the info in your videos!
@nicoleandmico
@nicoleandmico Год назад
Hey there we booked the tickets in advance online. In total we booked two tickets, one for the general site, and one for the wayna picchu entrance. It's kind of strange that they're two tickets but that's just how it works. The first ticket is called "Llaqta de Machupicchu Circuito 1 2 3 o 4" which is the entrance ticket to the general site. At the day you enter at the gates you will tell them which Circuit you are wanted to do (recommend circuit 2). The second ticket is called "Circuit 4 + Waynapicchu" because to access the trailhead to Waynapicchu you have to go through Circuit 4. Note that this ticket is really only good for going straight to the Waynapicchu trailhead. If you want to see the rest of the site and take the classic photos, you need to purchase the general ticket mentioned earlier. Again, in total we needed two tickets that we purchased online and in advance. We hope this helps you on your trip! 😊
