Machynlleth Horseshoe or the B@stard Lane. Extreme Welsh Green Lane

This film is from day 2 of a laning trip in Wales and exclusively covers the Machynlleth Horse Shoe lane driven in both directions. The lane is also commonly known as the bastard lane due to a couple of tricky obstacles along the way.
It's certainly one of my all time favorite lanes and a real test of you and your vehicle.
I've used a few different tracks for this film. Of my own making there is Sucker Punching. From my fav RU-vid artist , TeknoAxe, I've used Cutting Through the Madness and Qelric Dear Wolf. These tracks are all licence free under the creative commons licence.

Ah, the land of the Land Rover. What a lovely sight! Greetings from Texas.

wow, this has changed a lot and I mean a lot! I used to do a lot of laning around Mach and this one been the best....BUT when I did it the track from the ' slab' back to forest track was mostly smooth but rutty ( and watery ruts too) track, even where you go down the slab and up the other side was grass!, back then.The only exception was just from the gate going up. I haven't driven this for 20 odd years mind as I got fed up of the anti brigade and the ' good' lanes where closing. Thanks for sharing, big thumbs up for taking a small group out fella :-)

+Mike Mills It's been like this for at least the last 4 years of me driving it. It's a cracking lane and well worth being treated with some respect. It's so far out of the way though I think the anti's would have a hard job closing it down.

Great video guys. I have had/been driving Defenders and Range Rovers for the last 30 years and have owned various different models ... still got an L322 Ranger Rover and bought a new 110 Defender last year before they stopped making them! (even if they carry-on abroad ... won't be the same). I've never done anything as good as this, but it's great to see what others are getting up to, and reminding myself of what these vehicles can really do. Keep making the films and thanks.

I envy you guys there. The wet terrain is something else. For us here in South Africa, we going through a drought, so we haven't had much wet places throughout 2015. Off the beaten track, I saw a comment from a guy who is concerned about the environment etc. Cool, it's a legitimate concern whatever, yada yada. I therefore extend an invitation to you and any other LR fanatic(Okay...Jeep drivers can come too, someone has to cook for LR drivers in the bush), just once in your lifetime, come down to South Africa, should the environment concerns/laws there get any tougher there. Yes, we concerned about the environment as well...but we not pissy about it :)

@lowrangers2012Reloaded 8 лет назад
+Gabriel Sithole lol. That's a very kind offer. The thing with the UK is that there is this very PC brigade of people who actually don't understand what causes the damage. They certainly wont get out there and get their hands dirty digging drainage channels to help the lanes, as 4x4 volunteers do all the time. Its typical stuff from small minded people and we ignore then where we can.

did this and a bunch more lanes in mid wales over the last 3 days, must have opened more than 100 gates.... never got stuck and no damage or breakage the only lane we had to renounce on was one west of nant y moch where the tilt angles were 40 deg + so too dangerous the os landranger maps are generally ok but some lacking exact detail of where a track starts or ends will be back next year for another dose

Yeah I've had this chat with American lads before. Most of us are doing this in what is our daily drive so what we classify as tough or severe is going to be at a whole different level. Arguable when your doing this in your daily drive (road legal cars) where you want to avoid damage, it becomes more about driver skill and good recovery techniques.

Great vehicles! You mention you took the wrong route and had to go back up, which way did you i tend to go? Or just a bit of video banter ;-) i run and cycle this route a lot, uts a real shame so many people leave their litter behind after visiting. To respond to your lower comment- I can confirm that no forestry vehicles use this lane. Ive riden it on motorbikes and bikes for over a couple of decades now.
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 8 лет назад
+Shem Llewelyn when we plan a route we tend to keep it fairly circular so we don't repeat any lanes or over use an area. In this case I led for a short while and took us to the wrong end of this lane to start from so that to naturaly carry on with the circular route it made more sense to go to the other end of the lane. I must admit I have only ever seen a group of trailbikes on that lane and never another group. Other than the track itself it looks untouched. I am not a local but the last time I was on the lane there were 2 forestry vehicles at the start of the track and some kind of logging machine off to the side of the track. That will be some 18 months ago now though. I was told yesterday that someone has vandalised the waterfall end. Not sure if you have seen that?
@ShemLlewelynDyfi
@ShemLlewelynDyfi 8 лет назад
Hi. Ah ok as its a loop I was wondering on your route. Great fun both ways on any vehicle and on foot. The half way section has lost a hige amount of earth now compared to 3 years back. Someone had moved a lit of atuff around yes. The old slate slab has been moved and theres new signa up reffering to closing gates. The Dyfi has had a clamp down on moto x bikes and Ive seen a lot of xera up there recently and a huge group of 4x4s last week. Im sure another couple of years and itll become u passable by 4x4 do you think? Same as A couple of other previously well used green lanes around here

+leighavfc2703 there is a Green Lane guide I know called Kelvin Carpenter who lanes in a Freelander. They are actually quite capable in the right hands but me personally I wouldn't take on anywhere near this particularly lane. In fairness it's about the most extreme lane left I know of

How does the 90 fair compaired to the 110? Cracking videos by the way!
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 9 лет назад
Generally speaking the 110 is more planted and the longer foot print copes with terrain better. However when things get tight on the lanes the 110 can be hard to manoeuvre. I prefer the 110 because I like to camp as well and it gives me lots of space

Is it advisable to upgrade shocks and springs before greenlaning?
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 9 лет назад
Not not at all. That just gives you a little more clearance but then you have knock on effects of altering your vehicle geometry. To start with go for MT tire's in a taller size than standard. We go out with standard cars and just take it slower with them!

Road legal almost standard UK vehicles. Nothing else in the world in the price bracket as standard can come close. Most of those are 15+ years old and cost less than 2 weeks salary. One did go up without help but the rest took no chances as they had a weekend trip to finish so why risk it smashing them up with excessive power. I'm guessing you're American............
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 10 лет назад
In the UK I'm pretty damn sure. Interestingly it's only recently we had a Jeep enthusiast come along. He is in the £1800 auto DISCO that sales up. His Jeep is up for sale at double that. There will always be exceptions but I believe your standard £1,500 DISCO 1 will out perform anything in that bracket!

Inconsiderate Drivers with oversized tyres ruin it for others, who have the consideration to repair as they go. repair it or lose it. Simple.
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 8 лет назад
MMmm! Part right. Oversized tyres don't ruin anything. Especially not in that area where the forestry vehicles and machines are considerably bigger. Inconsiderate drivers ruin it for everyone everywhere. Personally I'd prefer not to damage it in the first place but yes if you do damage you should try to leave it as you found it. Common sense!!
@off-roadrcaddict4572
@off-roadrcaddict4572 8 лет назад
I only say oversized tyres really for areas where they seem to damage soft areas in a way that makes it overly difficult for lower vehicles. Some places you just can't drive round. Love your vids, you are conscious of what you do and considerate to others. Keep up the good work.
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 8 лет назад
I understand. The tyre debate is always interesting with people claiming you shouldnt drive on anything but AT's. I'm a believer in letting people mod and drive what they like. They key is driving respectfully. If the ground is so soft that a tyre can damage it, it doesn't matter what size it is, you probably should consider not driving it in the first place. Where standard vehicles cannot get through it's more often than not down to natural erosion or farm vehicle damage. It's not often because of some idiot tearing through wearing big boots.
@davidhedley772
@davidhedley772 9 лет назад
It WAS a green lane before you ruined it.
@leeburstow3765
@leeburstow3765 9 лет назад
I can only assume you are a walker or rider. Like many of your kind, the attitude that Green Lanes are for one type of traffic is narrow minded. This is a great example of a lane that would be completely overgrown and unusable within 18 months if it wasn't driven. Especially those centre sections through the woods. In all my time of driving it I have never seen a walker or a horse in the area let alone on the lane. Anyway, thanks for watching the film!
@davidhedley772
@davidhedley772 9 лет назад
Yes, I am a walker. One reason not to walk on what started life as GREEN lanes is that often they are now a quagmire thanks to 4*4s and motorbikes - I avoid my local ones for that reason. Lanes are legally classified into who can use them - but I'm happy for anyone to do so (law or no law) as long as it does not affect use by others. Incidentally, I don't like Forestry Commission plantations either and stay clear of them anyway (as do most walkers), which may be another reason why you don't see many.
@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 9 лет назад
David Hedley So let me get this straight, your whining on about a lane that would be overgrown and unusable if not driven and you wouldn't walk it anyway because it's another thing you don't like in life (Forestry Plantation) yet you still want to have a little dig at the people who do want to use it. Isn't that just a walker all over. As I understand it, there are something like 4% of the Green Lanes in this country open to vehicular use and the rest is now restricted. Who is to say my hobby is so wrong and yours is so right given that terrible balance? What I do know is that you will see the Land Rover boys laughing and joking, volunteering for charity and rescue work and generally enjoying life. Now if you want to find the opposite to that, point me at a walker!!
@davidhedley772
@davidhedley772 9 лет назад
lowrangers2012 That's a bit mean. I spent many years as part of a rescue team, and I also laugh a lot. So let's both keep happy and enjoy life.

Mate you took the time out to watch the video of my pass time and cast the criticism in an unbalanced fashion. Can you blame me for coming out fighting? If you see the amount of green lane films I make and the positive spin I try to put on the way we do it you must understand I attract my fair share of walking nutters. OK, you seem actually quite reasoned in comparison but it's hard for me to differentiate by RU-vid comment!

@lowrangers2012Reloaded
@lowrangers2012Reloaded 8 лет назад
+martyn dickinson it's an interesting debate and yes its true that if driven badly a vehicle can do damage. Its equally true to say that walkers are proven to be vastly more detrimental to byways based on a variety of reasons. There is lots of evidence for this the most recent of which is at Hadrians Wall where walkers have meandered around and visited in such numbers that some of the paths may have to be closed. I also believe this particular track you have selected to comment on is used by forestry vehicles and is subject to massive water errosion. The simple fact is that nature and commercial industry does more damage than 4x4 use, if they weren't driven by vehicles they would be lost forever and it isn't the type of transport that does the damage, its the type of person whether that be driver or walker. I do find people who comment like this are a little closed minded to the facts!
