This video is so helpful! I have a simple set up, DL 16 S and master Fader 5. Two guitars and two microphones and an iPad with backingtracks. Thank you so much for not only showing all the possibilities, but showing the professional way of handling the system. I have always hit the little square at the top of the slider to make adjustments on reverb, delay and so on. Never once did I think to go over to ‘Mix’ on the right and apply the effects from there. Thank you very much

Hi!... 2.52k subscriber here from the Philippines. I'm a volunteer mixing at our church every Sunday. After we watched your tutorials (1-7), the church granted my requests having a DC16 Axis with 4 per side RCF Line arrays. Month before our sound system delivered, I already had the knowledge to operate it. Thanks for the INTUITIVE VIDEO TOTURIALS. Doing video tutorial (sooner) on how to upgrade the dl32r with DC16 Axis to master fader 5.2 (and firmware) would be a great help. THANKS!

Hi Elmer, I am so happy that the tutorials have helped you and the folks working with you to get a better understanding of the things in those videos. God deserves our very best and I am so happy to be a tiny part of your ministry there. WOW! RCF mains... fantastic! I no longer have a DL32R or Axis console so I can not offer any advise to update, however... updating the iPads to 5.2 should be a breeze and after that, when you connect the Axis, it too will need an update. Thank you for your service!!!

Hi Sir, thanks so much for the impartation of knowledge to us here. I must say, i have really enjoy every bit of your tutorials. But can you please make a tutorial solely on Matrix, Routing and the essential use of Return 1-2, 3-4 on the master fader 5 for us?
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
Hi Panob,, I no longer have or use Mackie gear so I don't have a DL mixer to make another video however, maybe I can still help you. A matrix output is a mix that has any of the outputs... for instance, you could have the left and right main outputs turned up in matrix one, this would allow you to use Matrix 1 as a mono feed to some speakers in the hallways and restrooms in a church or anywhere for that matter, you could set some compression/limiting and some EQ to cut off some low end so the dynamic range and bass response is minimized. This matrix would allow you to make sure that anything panned left or right in the stereo main L/R mix is sent to that matrix. Of course, matrix 1 is mono, but like other things in Master Fader, you can link two of them together for stereo. The common jargon term for a stereo matrix or many "matrixes".... is matrices. (may tre sees) Anyway, basically a matrix is a mixer of the mixer's outputs. The routing page is very simple, this is where you would choose an XLR output on the mixer for the hallway/restrooms matrix. Simply connect the dots from the available signals vertically along the left side to whatever destination you want across the top. Experiment with this, you really can't hurt anything experimenting and it is the only way to fully grasp how this stuff works :) Returns 1-2 and 3-4 are used when you have a computer's stereo outputs connected to the mixer, again, the routing page will allow you to choose which stereo return that would accept the computer's audio. I do hope that helps :)

Hi Dan! First I would like to thank you for all of the videos on the DL series. I purchased a DL16s about a year ago to use with my band and your videos have been incredibly helpful. So I was setting reverb levels a couple hours ago and i realized i wasn't really getting any reverb in my monitors. (Background: I play in a 3 piece band. We all have in-ear monitors and separate mixes, I set all of them and we generally practice with the mains turned off since no one is around.) Well after toying around a bit i found I wasn't getting any reverb because i had my vox fader turned down in the main mix (like i said before, we practice with them off so i didn't notice). Well i couldn't quite wrap my head around why that was the case and i ended up finding that if i turned FX1 (reverb) to prefader, i could control the level of reverb in each of our mixes (and in the mains) independently (so i believe). Well i had watched this video the other day and i came back in to rewatch and see what you did. I noticed you select post fader for FX1. Is there any benefit to doing it that way? Is there anything bad about doing it the way i have it set up now? I'm also a little confused because... well what's the "master fader" on the FX1 send for then? We set levels for each mix at the return so is it redundant? i must be overlooking something. I have a couple other questions too if you happen to have any clues. What is the headphone jack for? Will it toggle output channels based on what is selected in masterfader or is it just always set to the mains? I guess i really am just looking for a way to audition mixes without having to reroute input/outputs. Any ideas? Thanks again for all of the videos! They are incredibly helpful!!! I greatly appreciate all your work!

Hi Horace, The reason that effects sends are “almost” always set to post-fader is because we assume that an audio engineer or someone is almost constantly changing the front of house (FOH) Main LR mix fader levels. When an affect is set to pre-fader, the sound person would go insane constantly trying to keep the effect balanced in the main mix. Now, since you are talking about three in ear monitor mixes, it would seem logical to use pre-fader, but this comes with some very aggravating anomalies that just can not be eliminiated when using an effect pre-fader. I am assuming that all three musicians are using one reverb. When Bill turns his vocal up in his mix, his vocal gets dryer, when he turns his vocal down in his mix, his vocal becomes more wet. If I were you, I would use a separate reverb for each of the three musicians, but it will be very aggravating to keep a consistent mix, because every time anything that has reverb on it gets changed, the balance between dry and wet become instantly wrong, then you have to chase and go back to the reverb return and change it, only to discover that the reverb on all the other inputs were changed too, and that is just not good. When there is a sound person running sound for the audience, his/her reverb should absolutely be set to post-fader and he/she should have their own reverb. The master fader for each effect ”send” is exactly that,… it is the master fader of all the channels of audio that are being sent “to” that effect. The effect “return” is a single stereo fader that has the sound of our effect that can then be added (returned to taste) …. to a mix. So, as I just described, setting levels for each effect send and effect return is definitely NOT redundant. The headphone jack on the front of the mixer can be used for a variety of things, such as you requested, allowing the person that is connected to the headphone output to “listen in” (with a solo button engaged) on anything they want, like trying to find a hum on the bass guitar channel, trying to figure out why the left side of a keyboard is weaker than the right etc. or clicking the solo button on monitor mix outputs like you want to do, allowing a person (you) to listen in to each individual musician’s mix. Here again, assuming that you are the one in charge of the mixer and setting things up. I must say this too… each musician that is using an IEM absolutely without fail MUST have their own device to control their mix, asking someone else to do that is just plain ludicrous. I have always said, if you are using an IEM mix, YOU have to have an iPad or whatever to make things right. Horace, if you are the one using the headphone jack to SOLO other mixes as I suggest, you are going to need to understand how important it is that you do NOT start making any level changes and then realize,,, CRAP! I’m on the wrong mix!… After using the SOLO button to listen to anything BUT your mix,… you will need to SOLO your own mix and leave your mix “soloed” while you play, there will be no need to unplug. In other words, whatever system of IEM you use, it will no longer connect to the mix output that you have been using,… it will stay connected to the headphone output. You will need a TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) 1/4" male plug plugged into the headphone jack on the mixer, and the other end of that cable will be two (tip-sleeve) 1/4" plugs on the other end connected to the inputs of your IEM transmitter. It is imperative that this type of cable is used. Don’t use a mish mash of adaptors to “fit”… it must be a TRS for the headphone jack on the mixer, and two 1/4” (tip-sleeve) plugs on the other end connected to your IEM. In the routing page, click on the “Output” tab, make sure that Monitor L and Monitor R are connected (dots) to Monitor L and Monitor R along the left-hand side. I think that answers all your questions. 80 minutes later :) The only thing I can suggest is that you set up your gear and tell the rest of the guys that a portion of time spent in the rehearsal needs to be dedicated to experimenting with the things I explained. Only until you change things and go back and forth between settings will you have a good understanding of the results,….. and sometimes consequences. :)

Dan thank you so much for the quick and thorough response! Okay so let me make sure have this correct... For the main mix i want a separate reverb. Setting it to post fader, allows me to adjust the faders and preserve the ratio of wet/dry i have already set. However, if it was set to prefader, every fader adjustment in the main mix would only change the dry signal and thus it would also need an adjustment to its reverb send because it would be out of balance with the dry signal now... essentially doubling the work of the audio engineer. so for a mix that will be adjusted constantly, like the main mix, this is the way to go. Now the monitor mixes are a bit different. In each of our monitors, the only signals going to reverb are vox (3 vox signals total, there is still bass, guitar, drums, etc... but i have left all those dry in our monitors). So it sounds like i can use one reverb channel for all of our monitor mixes. If i set this reverb to prefader, each fader adjustment will again require adjustment of its associated reverb send. Since we expect minimal adjustment to our monitor levels after being set, prefader is ok in this application. (Prefader is not something we would want to consider doing if we had a mix that required constant adjustment in real time because it essentially increases our workload). The benefits to using prefader here are that 1) monitor mixes won't be affected by the main mix faders and 2) I get to use one reverb track for 3 monitor mixes instead of having to use a separate reverb channel for each... and i only have 4 FX total. The master fader for the effect send... okay i think i understand. Changing this level would affect the return in ALL mixes. This fader is downstream of effect send, and immediately upstream of any given mix return. (sorry if crude, trying to picture the signal chain). I'm still a little confused on the headphone jack. Does the output mix change based on my view selection in master fader? How do I change the output? Does it only output the main mix? Is it specifically for listening in on soloed tracks? I have not been able to find anything that explains it. And i'm really unsure of its function/use. I got my bandmates to download masterfader a while back but haven't really used it. We haven't played out yet, and our practice space is small so there hasn't been much of a reason. I set vox levels for each of us a while back and thats it. You make a great point though. I need to get them used to using it. Man i am so confused on this headphone jack. I was not able to find any literature on it when i looked. I haven't used it for anything other than listening to the main mix (or at least that is what i am assuming comes out of it), and when i did that i just used a 1/4" stereo to 1/8" stereo adapter and plugged my IEM right into it. Currently all of our monitor mixes are just connected to Aux outputs. I set their mix levels to their taste. I haven't actually heard any of their mixes. Thank you again! :D
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
@@horacewoolard331 correct on all of your statements about understanding my description and advice. When you listen to the headphone output, it will be "outputting" the stereo Main LR mix. When you activate any SOLO button on any audio channel you will then hear just that channel, (SOLO) if you listen to the bass guitar (soloed) you guessed it,.... just bass. If you go to someone's IEM mix and hit the SOLO button on their "master fader" you will hear... wait for it....... their mix. If you SOLO your mix you will hear your mix. A view group has nothing to do with what is heard on any of the outputs. It is just a very simple way of hiding channels that you don't want to see. You must forget about trying to find information on the www. Your BEST option since I am not there is to experiment. You can't blow anything up so play with the solo buttons and read about view groups in the manual.

Hi, when you turn off everything at the conclusion of job, concert, show, church service, festival or whatever :) the mixer will remember every single setting when it gets turned back on again, whether it is one minute later or two years later. Before you shut it down, it is always imperative that you create another "snapshot" and then name it,.... then shut it off. Remember,... all the shows and snapshots are stored in the iPad, not a phone. The mixer does not "store" shows and snapshots. So, how does the mixer know how to set things when it gets turned back on? It can not change anything on it's own,... YOU can change things, but it can't, so, everything is unchanged when it gets turned back on so everything is exactly in the same position as it was when it was turned off. Here is a good analogy,,, if you have an old analog mixer, and you put the lid on the mixer's case and lock it shut, the mixer's faders and knobs will be sitting precisely where they were when you put the lid on. Same as your Mackie digital mixer. Now, here is something that you must understand,.... when you turn on your iPad and open Master Fader, and THEN your mixer, Master Fader (app on the iPad) might prompt you with a message that is something like this: Do you want to use the settings in the mixer or the iPad? I always choose the mixer, that will ensure that the mixer will turn on with it's last known settings....(the ones you had when you turned it off last night. You can always choose a different snapshot/show after it boots up however, if you are terrible and forgetful, and did NOT create a new snapshot before you turned off the mixer at the end of the previous show, the mixer will at least try to save your butt by bringing up it's last "remembered" settings for you. If you choose (iPad), then the mixer will throw away it's short term memory and will open with whatever you have on your iPad. So......... SAVE SAVE SAVE!!!!!

Yes you can pan things in the Stereo IEM mixes. On the right hand side of the iPad is the mix select button, it's the big LR white button, up above that are some small white windows one of them you will see options and one of the things you will want to check for the IEM mixes is pre-fade, and uncheck "Use LR Pan", if this is not unchecked, then the front of house sound engineer's panning will affect the IEM mixes.

there are no default settings for any of the effects... You need to choose one of the effect channels (1, 2, 3 or 4) and pick a type of effect you want. Then you need to raise that effect channel fader of the sounds that you want to go to that effect. Finally, you need to raise the fader level of that effect "Return". @user-jx3jp3gb4x Год назад
Hi David, the DL16S does have four effects. You said, "I can see the signal on the channel but nothing in the effects." What channel are you talking about? Without me being there you are going to have to be the one to look at all the settings that are working for FX 1&2 and compare them to 3&4. When you said you can see the signal on the "channel", I assume you mean that you are successfully "sending" audio "to" the (3rd effect) and you can see the audio coming in on the 3rd effect in the effects window where all four FX can be seen... correct? If I assumed correctly, then you have not done one or more of the following things to hear the effect, without knowing any of this it makes my response very time consuming to try to help you. Perhaps you are trying to hear the effect 3 in some kind of IEM or monitors. If that's the case, then you won't hear it if the effect 3 is set to post-fader. In that case, you need to have the FX3 set to pre-fader, or raise FX 3 return on the Main L/R mix. Or, you don't have FX 3 and 4 routed correctly in the "Routing Page". Also, you could have the FX 3 and 4 RETURN muted? If you have these effects (3&4) set to "Use LR Mute" that could be reason also. It is 2 am here and I need to hit the hay, give me some better information and I can help.

However I’m not able to pan the L to the left and the R to the right? I can pan them when they are separate channels, but not when they are combined into 1. Is there a way round this? Thanks Scott.
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
Hi Scott, unfortunately, Mackie's designers ;( do not allow us to choose our own unique pan settings when two channels are linked. As soon as you link two channels, the panning is immediately set hard left and hard right. So,.... you said that you wanted the left side of the keyboard to be panned hard left and the right side of the same "linked" keyboard to be panned hard right. Even though we can not adjust panning of linked channels, your keyboard's left side should be panned left. Here is an analogy... your keyboard has an acoustic grand piano loaded but the higher notes are being heard in the left channel, opposite of what is common. This can be this way because of one of two things... your keyboard patch cables are connected backwards or, they are connected to an even/odd channel pair. In other words,,, 10-11 instead of 9-10, things should usually be paired odd/even. You know, now that I think of it... are your two "linked" channels set to the center (mono)? Or are they split hard left and hard right? We can continue this conversation via email if you want, use the "CONTACT ME" on my website... www.kurysound.com

And my biggest question is: Do you send fx to monitor mixes Pre or Post Fader - in other words, when you select the Pre or Post option in the Master of the FX 1 or FX 2 bus, shouldn't it be Post as well? So that verb is following the channel fader of the Aux Sends?
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
Mackie does not allow individual channels to be Pre or Post, Mackie only allows the use of a "Pre-Fader" or Post-Fader" setting for each Aux output, So, to answer your question, with a mixer other than Master Fader, yes, I would set most input channels in a given Aux mix to "Pre-Fader", however, I would indeed set the FX to Post-Fader, but,,,,, only if those FX are being heard in the Aux mix.

I assume you mean a tap tempo button, the short answer is no. The best thing to do is to use another iPad/tablet (not a phone) and leave the second tablet showing the tap tempo button. Horrible workaround, but it will work.

Dan now that you've had the dl32r for a while, it being discontinued and moving on to the Yamaha TF. If you did it again would you get the dl32r again? Im looking to go digital and was considering the dl32r but now that its discontinued and mature I have been looking at the PreSonus StudioLive III 32R, racked and faderless also the A&H SQ-6, faders, surface, etc. Im torn between the way to go console or full on faderless and spend time drooling over kit, and using the remote apps for the hardware. I work mostly with a 6 piece band with a few multi instrumentalists = lots of inputs used. Anyway I just happened to be looking on craigs list today and a claimed mint DL32R came up for sale for 900. Ive heard people have had issues w loose ribbon cables inside the unit, but you dont see many for sale on the used market so that would leave me to think most are working just fine. Anyway would love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Maybe give the DL32r a shot for a first go at digital before stepping up to a larger ticket mixer. Many Thanks, Doug.

I would stay away from the DL32R because it has ribbon cables that cause intermittent connections. For no apparent reason, suddenly a particular input channel or output will become massively distorted or sometimes no audio at all. The fix is to open the unit, remove each end (at a time) of the ribbon cables to the front panel and clean the contacts with some type of electronic spray contact cleaner. This will fix the problem for an unknown length of time and your guess is as good as mine as to when and where you will be when it decides to crap out. I use a Yamaha TF Rack and I love it.

Hi Thomas, glad to see you :) I did switch to Yamaha TF and love that setup, but Mackie was a big change for me and I won't forget how nice Ben Olswang was to me. I have never made this promised video about effects, so many users are in the dark about effects and how to route audio, so hopefully this video will help clear things up for some users.

Hello… what will happen to the mixer settings if the electricity goes off during operation, will it resume when the electricity comes back or will it reset?
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x Год назад
Hi Ton, the DL series mixers store all of their "shows" and Snapshots (scenes) on the iPads or tablets used with the system, the actual mixer does not store these, however, the mixer is constantly updating it's internal memory of everything so,,, if power were to go out during an event, when power is restored to the mixer, it will power up in the exact state that it was in when power was lost. Very cool indeed! It is imperative that when this happens, the mixer will prompt all the tablets with two choices to reconnect...always choose load from mixer, not iPad. DO NOT let anyone on their devices recall anything... after power is stable and it appears as though it won't go out again, THEN create a new "Snapshot".

@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x Год назад
There are 14 XLR outputs on the front of the DL32R mixer any of which can be configured for aux outputs, mono or stereo. The DL16S and DL32S have fewer XLR output connections.

Hi Dan, not sure if you've covered it yet but I'd like to record a live band over USB(DL16S) as separate channels to a DAW then use it at a venue to speed up sound check process. Would you be able to show routing setup for this? Cheers
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
Hi John, go to the routing page, along the left-hand side is the inputs, across the top is the destination (output), select the USB tab, scroll along the left side and connect the dots from Mic Pre 1 to USB 1, then Mic Pre 2 to USB 2 and so on.... make sure that your DAW's sample rate is set to 48 Khz.

The DL1608 only has two effects not four, but they can be viewed and altered just like the other DL mixers and exactly how the video shows. To view the "Return" faders swipe to the last input fader (16) then you will see iPad then FX1 and FX2.

A bit of an unrelated question, but how does the lowering or increasing the Trim level on Input B affect the signal coming in on Input A? I’ve been really noticing this while trying to get a Lav Mic to sound decent and found that raising or lowering theTrim affects the Gain on Input A… thoughts?
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
Hi Masterworks, thanks for watching, but please bear with me as I describe this confusing "TRIM" slider, widget, thingy :) Originally, Mackie's first DL series mixer was a DL1608. It did not have the ability to recall the gain settings because these were actual analog gain knobs on the rear of the mixer, however, all the other features of this "digital" mixer could in fact be recalled as part of the snapshot. Mackie decided to design a new DL mixer and it was called the DL32R. They made sure that this new DL32R would recall gain settings as well as all the other settings. Since the DL1608 did not have USB multi-track recording or playback abilites, Mackie decided that this TRIM slider would allow us to at least increase the channel's level if the GAIN knob settings were too low. Seasoned audio folks understand that these TRIM sliders on most digital mixers do not raise or lower the gain of the audio signal going "into" the XLR mic preamp. So, if the XLR signal was too low, the DL1608 user could raise the level on the iPad, and have more level to work with, this kept the iPad engineer from having to go up to the stage to turn the physical GAIN knob. The TRIM does NOT alter the gain of the mic preamp. If an XLR input becomes overloaded, the ONLY thing that can lower the gain and remove the distortion is the GAIN setting, not the trim. Changing the TRIM slider only affects the volume. I argued with Mackie over this when the DL32R came out. I said... "if any particular input is set to receive a MIC PREAMP, then the TRIM slider should not even be seen. Conversely, if an input is switched to receive a digital sound source, then the GAIN slider should not be seen, but only the TRIM should be visible. They won the debate when they informed me that it is kind of a band-aid fix for the DL1608. Anyway, the GAIN adjusts the mic preamp's sensitivity, and the TRIM adjusts a digital source. I suggest ALWAYS leaving the TRIM alone, and only use it sparingly if the source is digital like USB, DANTE etc. Gosh! That was long,... but that's the short and the long of it :)

Hello my friend . First of ALL , I apologize for my English, I'm from Brazil and I'm going to use the translator to try to clarify a doubt. We want to use a dl32s for two functions, control the church sound and also the broadcast sound for those who are at home. for this I would use two nozes for this ( stereo ). As they are two totally different environments, I would need a equalization and dynamics different from the church mix . Is there such a possibility? On the Yamaha ls9 32 channels, for example, there is a way tô double channel, so we use from 33 to 64 to mix the live with different equalization and dynamics. Another question is about multitrack recording. Can I record multitracks directly on a flash drive or just using a computer? Thanks !
@user-jx3jp3gb4x
@user-jx3jp3gb4x 2 года назад
Hi Anderson, multitrack recording is only possible with the DL32S when a computer is connected to it and running some form of DAW software. The DL16S and DL32S can not record multitrack directly to an external drive. The DL32R is the only device made by Mackie that can share channels similar to the LS9, but you will need two DL32R mixers and both mixers will need a Dante card installed.

A rare video which understands what real engineers need. However, I was frustrated at your Naming and Coloring. Identical labeling Robynverb for presets, Aux channels and FX channels left my head circling. Could you redo this and Name things Robyn Aux Sends Fx Out, or something more clear, then do completely different colors for Aux vs FX? Thanks

I will not be changing or remaking this video, if you want to use different colors that is clearly up to you. I use the same colors since they are all typically about one musician.
