I was a junior in high school when The Heist came out. I grew up in a suburb of Seattle. Those songs were EVERYWHERE. He was a hero that could do no wrong and his songs were bumped by EVERYONE. The Heist in my microcosm was such a significant album and those songs were cool. I had friends in his music videos, and songs like Same Love still hold weight over a decade later. He truly got dealt a bad hand, but nothing truly came close to that album ever again. And if I’m being honest, GKMC has aged far better and did truly get snubbed that year at the Grammys with even Macklemore realizing he shouldn’t have won it.

Macklemore fucking sucks and Kendrick deserved the award, albeit awards shows are stupid.

It's a shame he personally took all of the wind out of Kendrick Lamars sails, who would dwindle and fall into mediocrity while Macklemore would go on to create some of the most critically and socially acclaimed albums of all time. That's totally how things played out after that.

Oh my god. After reading your post and being an Atmosphere lover, I had to go listen to this album. This doesn’t fit in with 2000s Rhymesayers, this is completely taking Slug’s style… He sounds like Slug during the Overcast years without the battle-rap aggression Slug was trying to achieve.

@@lcs-1 his debut album was given positive reviews, and his tune Same Love was given critical acclaim due to its lyrics about same sex Marriage (remember hip hop has a serious homophobia issue that only in the past decade has there been attempts to clean up the image).

@@LindsayHands also, even before the heist album blew him up, he was making waves and getting buzz online in underground hip hop circles.

He was an underground to charts success so his popularity seemed organic and merited to those watching at the time. Hell even Kendrick had tutelage and some sort of expectation goin for him, very immeshed with the outgoing hip hop establishment.

Eeeehhh apples and oranges, I was a huge em fan, but he fell off hard, the only improvement he's made is rhyming, and even then he used to do it so much more effortlessly, with out the awkward breaking it down he does now. Musically em was a hip hop purest, now he's nothing more than a pop artist with nothing left to say and angry he's falling off. Em would have never thought about putting pink on a song, let alone basically being a feature on his own song, giving the majority of it to pink...... It's decisions like that, corny beats from old 80's 90's songs that weren't even ideal for rap back then, and his awful choppy delivery (which flow used to be his thing), the fact that he has to point out his punchlines instead of letting them speak for themselves, and he talks about poop more than any rapper I've heard in my life (besides bizarre, which basically was a product of him, but exaggerated to the 100 degree), he made a whole song about putting a gerbil in his ass....on a greatest hits album, no less, and now he's so obsessed with recapturing his height, that he's tarnishing the work he put in along the way.

Big difference between album and genre..... Having the top album is general, but him having the top album in hip hop over actual hip hop artists, that deserved it, was the difference. He was "hip hop" of the year, not just in general, which is a much different statement as it's not saying he's specifically outshined everyone in hip hop, just that he had a good album in general. Taylor wasn't being honored for being top hip hop artist over actual hip hop artists.

If you agree with his points all that means is you have the capacity to enjoy something even though you know it's not artistically groundbreaking, good, or significant. That's a good quality to have. I enjoy or downright love a lot of albums I know aren't good or great on a technical level, but there's still something there that connects me to the music.

Eminem is the best example of this, his first three albums all had something to say, after that it's been rappity rap and (while improving lyrically) has become lamer and lamer every other album.

Fuck, even beyond that, Paul's Boutique was a game-changing album for 1989 and it was produced by two white guys for three jews (Ill Communication was also very influential too, and was legitimately well respected by black Hip Hop artists, and that came out even earlier). I might be giving Macklemore too much credit but I thought the point of Heroes was that he was being self aware about how skewed his perspective of rap was when he was a kid. And that we was a walking stereotype of a white kid who was into rap. If he was trying to do that, I do think there was better ways of putting it. I just can't imagine Mack would be that unaware of how it came across if he didn't mean to just be self critical of his former perspective.
