Macon, GA...WOW! As the crime and poverty rates continue to rise to some of the nation's worst, this city has seen better days. So many abandoned and run down areas, its looking REALLY rough in places. Can it be revitalized to what it once was, or will it continue to decline? Let's take a drive through some of the WORST areas and see what it looks like!

@@kagnewcobra5228 I'm originally from Macon and it has been on the decline since at least the early 1970s. There are areas that were upper middle class then, but today are just another ghetto. The local economy and drugs are contributing factors. Businesses leave one location for a better one and leave entire shopping centers vacant. One of the biggest issues the city has is local government leaders who would rather put community funding in their pockets than into the community. The area filmed here is a good example. The same officials have ownes this are for decades. They get reelected because of division and fear mongering. It seems as though they do have a good mayor at this point (Dec 2022). Hopefully he will help matters.

The mall was pretty nice. I worked at the old Home Depot commuting from Atlanta back in 2005 I think. I recently went back a few weeks ago for the HBCU football classic game. Alot has changed, didn't realize the mall is shut down. I used to help build Habitat homes there, can't imagine how those areas look now.

Macon does not have a lot of thriving business with pay worthy enough for these people to live a “regular lifestyle. Let’s improve the school system. Provide grants/ help for ppl to rebuild some of these areas? Some area are filled with nothing but older people who owns their homes but is not capable of renovating or improving their homes.. other city look at this as opportunities to improve and rebuild community. Think about Atlanta and how much the Mayor impacts that City. Shirley Franklin (miss her and if she is reading this ;0) I think you should run again) was the best. I’m from NY, but when I was looking into buying my first home, I found good deal in Macon. The houses were in bad shape, but some of them had land, which I love. I work from home so I can pretty much move anywhere. The only reason why I didn’t was because I worry about the schools for my kids. I still believe that these towns are an amazing opportunity for young people, without kids, who complain they can’t afford a home. You can get a home there, open a small business, and gentrify the area.

Macon is perhaps its own worst enemy and one we have begun dwelling into to understand. We moved to this shell of grander times three years ago. Regrets you ask? Why yes, but you know what they say about hindsight.. There are worse places to be fair. If you look at surrounding states, each has a piedmont city that has had rapid growth and development over the last few decades. Macon however has driven business out. This has left a large poverty level population, thus increasing crime, homelessness, property degradation, lowering education, and all the other little trivialities that create one immense platter of total dereliction. As an outsider, what truly captivates me are the local ideologies. They seem to not notice which is quite strange with Atlanta being so close. After our home closing two real estate agents, an attorney, along with ourselves were speaking. A business was mentioned and each of their eyes leaped wide, "I would never go on that side of town. I mean as a kid it was great, but now! Absolutely not!!" This mentality is not productive.

Born and raised in Macon but haven’t lived in Georgia for 9 years. When I was a kid our neighborhood was full of stable households. Everyone went to church, respected their neighbors, and kept their property clean. Me and the other neighborhood kids would roam around the streets, light firecrackers, and wander in the woods til dark. I’m only 25 so that wasn’t so long ago. When I visit my family there it’s sad to see that my childhood neighborhood is full of neglected and overgrown houses rented out with 10+ people cramming into 3 or 4 bedrooms. Loud music blaring, rougher teens wandering around at all hours, people leaving trash in the street. It’s amazing how much can change in just 10-15 years. I still look back fondly on my childhood in Macon and am proud to be from there. It was idyllic in some ways. I don’t think I would choose to raise children there now. Places change I guess. I’ve lived in 5 different states since leaving and nowhere has ever felt as much like home as Macon did.

Come to Rutledge Ga. You will witness prime farm land being destroyed along with acres of woodlands with beautiful natural springs and creeks. Part of the water system we use. Two thousand acres so far. Now here comes the other auxillary companies wanting in. There's a meeting coming up to rezone property all around, from farm/ residential to heavy industrial. So sad! I'm on the main highway, where they left some properties as a buffer zone. Rivian has broken ground, and construction is full force. Electric vehicles, they want another huge industry, and can't keep the one they already have producing. Not one word from any environmentalist came forward to stop it, and keep it natural. People around here tried, raised money, got some lawyers, didn't do any good. Since it's right behind my home, I don't want to stay, the traffic, noise, and it will run 24-7, so we will be lit up like an airport. Time to be looking, and getting out of here.

Typical rural Georgia housing problems. People who own the properties do not keep them up. Renters pay high rent for garbage housing. The cities condemn the housing, and run renters out--forcing them to pay even higher rents. This is all over rural Georgia---just one city of very many . How do we fix this ??? We must make more renters home owners, and help re-hab neglected properties.

Everyone knew each other and helped each other. There were no drugs or gangs in our neighborhood. Everyone went to church on Sundays and after church visited with our relatives. I miss that. This seems to have been constructed as a lower income community which are generally never meant to last very long. The people grow older and can not afford improvements or maintenance on a pension while many of the younger ones move where they find employment. It eventually gets to the point where the land becomes more valuable without the ramshackled housing so local governments focus elcewhere. 😢 It's sad but everything and everyone of us has it's time to wear out and become something else. Moved here more than 10 years ago and the roads need care. They built up the bars Downtown but refuse to pay living wages. There are no jobs here now and everything has gone up in price!

Current wages could be livable if inflation would cease, and businesses, utilities, and services would stop constantly jacking up prices. Heck, even 20 years ago, you would be sitting pretty making $15 an hour.

Thankfully not all of Macon looks like this. Certain areas are not cared for, the city spends money in the areas that don't need it as much to keep up appearances in said areas.

Check the crime rate. Very few places in Macon are safe to go. People won’t live in Macon unless they have too. Now that the police can’t do there job your pretty much on your own. Sad situation for what was once a thriving city.

Macon isn't all like this but it's not that far off. A lot of industry has left Macon. Then, we had a horrible mayor who left the city near bankruptcy. Industry left because some of these plants were getting older and the work ethic here isn't much. "It's not my job..." is what you used to hear. The attitude was another thing that industry just said enough is enough. There are also these sweetheart deals being playing in this and other states. A company gets a deal from a local government to pay no taxes if they move into town. The result can mean floating a bond to upgrade water, sewer and roads to the sight. Then about the time when these tax breaks are set to end, the machinery is shot, the roof is leaking, etc., that company just moves out to another silly city council willing to do another sweetheart deal. Some of those homes weren't abandoned.

I moved to Macon a year ago. I’ve shears the stories from my ex. Im working with some mentors who are helping me grow in every area of my life. I’m it from here, so if you know anyone who you think would benefit from mentorship comment below. This person person may be you, or a friend. It’s important that we fix this community. I plan on changing this city and need some wonderful people behind me who wouldn’t mind helping. My mentors are set to retire in their 30s in about 2.5 years from their business. They’ve created a passive income that’ll allow them more financial freedom. We all need the help. To combat against this, we must stand tall and strong as a unit.

This is going on all over America... Many cities and towns nowadays have depressed areas... Some are condemned properties the owner is intentionally keeping decrepit and holding on to until they can get themselves the right asking price... THEN it gets torn down!
