macOS Basic Home Server Configuration (Mac mini Server)

In this video I demonstrate every step I take to set up a Mac mini as my home server for file sharing, backup, iTunes duties and printing. I'm not going to call this video a tutorial, but if you were to follow these steps, you'd end up with a lovely little setup for home use with a lot of power and potential.
I'd like to say another big thanks to Kyle for donating this wonderful Mac mini 2009 server edition and also a big thanks to Gregg Black for donating my original Mac mini which has been serving me well for years.
This Mac mini happens to be a server edition but these steps apply to ANY Mac. Of course, Mac minis make a lot of sense as servers because they're small, quiet, power efficient and don't have a built in display.
If anyone has any questions about the processes in the video above please ask in the comment section below.
Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

Made it to the end. Not a single boring moment in it. I have a 2011 Mac Mini that Is too slow to run the graphics programs I work in and I have wanted to make it a server for some time now. Been working mainly in an open core unlocked 5,1 and an M1 MacBook Pro so I have a few computers to make a small home network. I’ll let you know how my setup goes when I finish it.Thanks for sharing this wonderful setup with us.

Its strange how I can watch all your videos non-stop without skipping anything, I think you're the only person I watch on RU-vid where I don't skip to certain parts of the video. Love the accent, Tom, but shouldn't have tuned in after bingewatching Gavin & Stacey for the umpteenth time. Loved looking around your room and seeing all that great gear from the past, the G3 tower etc. I've still got a PowerBook G3 that works, although I did upgrade from 2GB to 150GB HD. When I purchased it in 1998, my boss demanded to know why I needed such a huge HDD. "You'll never fill use 2GB's" he moaned. Yay, I wrote down "Tom" and not "Uncle Bryn!"

Question: When you are using home sharing like that with iTunes, how do you go about adding media to a iPhone/iPad etc? Seems the only way to do it is by plugging the iPhone directly into the Mac server and using screen share from your main machine to transfer the files. Anyone have a better fix for this? Also - fantastic upload, it really helped with my setup, Thanks!

hey there! Great video. Now, I do have an issue. I set my 2012 MacMini up exactly as you show, and I can see it on the network, yet when I try to log in, it says 'connection failed'. It seems to accept my log in and I can screen share, but I cannot see the MacMini hard drives etc. I am logging in as Registered User. This MacMini is connected to our router via ethernet as well. Any clues?, thank you.

If I want to format it in hard disk mode on the mac, it loads but it does not end the longest I waited was more than 3h until I canceled it. The hard drive has 500gb and it is not less than 30GB occupied. I tried both on MacBook Pro 2015 and Mac mini 2010 without success. Can you help me with that?

If I added an external 8TB HDD via the USB 2 port on the back on this 2009 Mac Mini with my 4K HDR movie collection in Itunes - would I be able to have my Apple TV 4K stream directly from it over my 100Mbps ethernet network? I would rather have a mac mini on all the time tucked away rather than my Desktop machine.

Thanks for this. Made it to the end and have a couple questions: How then do you add new music/content to the itunes library? i.e. I rip a dvd and now want to add it...do I drag it into the itunes library on the mac mini server, even if i burn it on a macbook pro that is accessing the server? Also, I do a lot of work in photo editing programs (lightroom and capture one), and have 2 4TB drives with photos on them. Currently im using carbon copy clone to create redundant backups with a weekly task run. I keep my libraries for capture one and lightroom separate from the master raw files and housed on the aforementioned 4TB drives.Any chance i can connect those drives and their redundant backups to the mini without disrupting my workflow? Both lightroom and capture one allow for non destructive editing, so im assuming as long as the preview files within the catalogs can “see” the master files, even if they are shared via network and not locally connected to my MBP, things would be fine, but would love your POV. Thanks for this, it was very straightforward.

Enjoyed this long tutorial. Actually powering HDD on/off reduces their life, so having them run 24/7 is better. I actually shut down my server when not in use, so I don't run 24/7. Mine is just a back-up system. Could the Mac lock the desktop like Windows / Linux servers to add extra layer of security. Not that it is required in your environment. I like the admin1 account to add a layer of obscurity. What about static IP? And auto open iTunes on start-up? Disclaimer: I am only 43 mins in, so will watch rest tomorrow; sorry If above in address later

Hopefully very soon. SCSI is the issue. I have a lovely ATTO SCSI card for a G5 but a G5 is a little too big to put in the server rack. I've been looking at various adapters but it's not going to be easy to get that drive talking to a modern version of macOS from what I've read. I need some good time to research and come up with a plan, but I do have tapes in stock ready to backup some crucial data.

@laishmorse4668
@laishmorse4668 7 лет назад
Sean Ward the raid is controlled through hardware. The computer only sees the one drive. It’s all handled internally within the raid box.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 7 лет назад
It's a very basic and quite underwhelming external enclosure containing a RAID5 controller. It's a Proavio Studiorack S4FR. It's designed for portable recording and reliable studio storage in the audio world. I wanted something rack mountable that could take 4 drives in RAID5 and that popped up on eBay for a decent price. It's surprising how many little options are out there. It needed new fans because the stock ones were very loud (strange considering the target users). It interfaces with FW800, FW400, eSATA or USB 2.0 and actually has quite a nice LCD on the back giving details of the array. I've needed to rebuild the array twice and it's actually been very straightforward and reliable to do. It's not the quickest box in the world and it gets quite hot, plus the internals are very generic and quite a mess but it does it's job so I'm quite happy with it. I'd actually buy another if one came along for cheap.

Screen sharing is VNC compatible, so a VNC client on Windows should be able to see your Mac without a problem. There are some VNC options in the Screen Sharing preferences.
