I really like this classic. And am going to try, but how can I end the lanpshade if i am not a fan of any fringe. I guess i have to connect the bottom row and not just cut off.

Hi! I love this tutorial and am planning to do this soon. Could you explain how you got the number of working cords to use? I understand how to find the length, but I’m not sure how to decide how many working cords I need to fit the circumference of my shade.
@MarchingNorth
@MarchingNorth Год назад
I’m glad you like it! Honestly, I figured out how many working cords I needed for one quarter of the lamp shade just by cutting and adding a bunch to the holding cord and holding it up to the lampshade- then I multiplied by 4 😅 and cut the rest. I’m more of an eye baller than a mathematician lol. I hope that helps!

Why did you make your working cords 67" long or one armspan? According to your formula, a 7.5" high shade the cords should each be 45"
@MarchingNorth
@MarchingNorth 2 года назад
I usually cut more cord than I need just to be safe. Then at the end I used some of the excess I cut off to fill in the fringe at the bottom. You can cut your cords as 45” long instead and then you’ll just need to cut short pieces at the end to fill in the fringe- either way works.

@MarchingNorth

It should but you might need to adjust the amount of cords and space the knots out a little differently- but you could definitely make it work!
@sharynalbertson6264

Hi…I have just undertaken to learn macrame but am already lost. I purchased a basket kit that was supposed to be for beginners but the instructions are incomplete and have few diagrams for the knots. I have managed to get the basket done but am totally stuck on how to do the bottom and make it look nice. The instructions say to drop this or that cord but doesn’t say what you ultimately do with them. I wind up with 60plus tails that will not fit around the 4 in ring for the center bottom. I find dozens of hanging projects but none that are for a closed bottom basket that are in English or have captions available, so that they are essentially useless to me. They work fast and I can’t follow their work even slowed down. Can you help me or recommend help? I have enjoyed your videos. They are easy to understand, and easy to watch for instructions. I am ready to throw the whole thing away and try some other craft. Can you help me or recommend someone who could? I am home bound so going to a craft store to get lessons is very difficult.

Hi, love this pattern, and thank you for the tutorial! Just a quick question, if you don’t mind, re the two ends of the holding cord that you tied together after adding the working cords; do you add a hitch knot on either side of these two cords as well, the same as the other working cord lengths? Thank you in advance!
@MarchingNorth
@MarchingNorth 3 года назад
That’s a great question! No, I didn’t- I just tied them together with an overhand knot. 😊

Thanks so much for coming back to me on this… I’m looking for a *semi* easy project to start with, and the walk-through you have done seems idiot-proof (although watch this space!) I had been eyeing up your Large Boho Wallhanging, but I think I should maybe just dip my toes before I dive right in! Thank you again! Love your work!

My lamp shade is smaller at the top. Do you know if this would work?
@MarchingNorth
@MarchingNorth 2 года назад
I think it might work, you’ll need to space the knots out more the further you go down. It’s hard to say without seeing it but it’s worth a try!

Can you write down the math for me? I don't understand how you got 59 cords. If your height was 7.5x3x2=45" I even looked at written tutorial and still perplexed. My lamp shade is C=52" Ht= 10" thx in advance.
@MarchingNorth
@MarchingNorth 3 года назад
So the part you’re talking about there is the length of the working cords (height of lampshade x 3, and then multiply the result x 2) Next, to figure out the length of the holding cord that you attach all the working cords to, you measure the circumference of the shade and add the working cord length you figured out first to that. The ends of the holding cord will be used as one pair of the working cords, so that’s why you add them together. Last, to decide how many cords to use I honestly just started cutting cords and attaching them to the holding cord. I’d hold it up to my lampshade to see if it was enough to fill in one third of it (because it was divided into thirds with the bars). Once I had that figured out I multiplied it x 3 and subtracted one (since the holding cord ends would be one of the working cords). I hope that makes sense! Math is not my friend, lol.

Also, I made a written tutorial that might help too www.marchingnorth.com/diy-macrame-lamp-shade/

@24ghosh24 3 года назад
@@MarchingNorth the math was really confusing..but the second paragraph was understandable...according to me if circu;ference is 52 " and height 7.5 ", we need the working chord lengths = 7.5*3*2=45". And holding chord length= 52+45= 97".isnt that right?number if chords is a trial and error.!
