Q: How can I convert my kit lens into a full-fledged macro lens?
A: Novoflex Retro adapters.
Recommend using Zoom lenses over Prime lenses. Primes restrict the plane of focus opportunities.
Only Nikon Z bodies can be used in the Nikon line. No Nikon F Retro adapter is available. But you can use the FTZ Adapter with F lenses on Nikon Z bodies.
Q: Does autofocus work with lens reversing rings? (AKA RETRO adapters)
A: full information is exchanged between the camera and lens. However, a lack of contrast in macro images can cause the autofocus to “hunt” and never settle on the correct focus. We recommend manual focus for all macro work. Use a focus rack under the camera with retro adapter or with bellows adapter to achieve fine focus.
Q: When I reverse my lens how does the front of my lens attach to the adapter?
A: An additional step ring is needed UNLESS your lens is threaded for 58mm.
Q: Can I use filters with my lens reversed?
A: YES - see video
Q: Why would I use a bellows system rather than a retro adapter?
A: For greater magnification and to use traditional macro lenses for maximum sharpness such as flat field lenses, enlarging lenses or microscope lenses.

I’m a little peeved I bought the balfux bellows for my fuji. I can’t focus because it doesn’t come with a focus rail. I wish I knew this when I bought the bellows because $999 was very expensive without a way to focus. 2 the book says the bellows come with reversing rings. Where are they?

Hi Nicholas: Matt here. Again, sorry to hear you are unhappy. Martin and I go to great lengths to explain how to configure the system in our videos. See 13:50 in this video. The reversing rings (RETRO/FLEX and FLEX/RETRA) are connected to the RETRO adapter. If you loosen the blue set screws on the bellows and remove the RETRO adapter, you will see adapter rings attached to it on either side. The adapter rings unscrew from the RETRO adapter (the two lens mounts with a coiled cable running in between). As supplied, it is equipped for a forward-facing lens. By screwing the threaded end into the front element of your lens (58mm is native, or using a step ring from 58mm to your lens' front filter thread), you can now reverse your lens on the bellows.

I wish I knew the focus rail was separately sold. I paid $999 for these bellows and I can’t focus.

Hi Nicholas: Matt here. Sorry to hear about that. We believe it's clear on our website they are sold separately and in our videos we explain that, too. I use the CASTEL-Mini II for my focusing rail: novoflexus.com/novoflex-mini-focus-rack-arca-compatible-castel-mini-ii/ And it is quite affordable. If you prefer a quick release, there is the CASTEL-XQ II novoflexus.com/novoflex-focusing-rack-with-q-mount-xd-quick-release-base/ But this, of course, is nearly half the price of the bellows.
