Follow me on my walk through Kew Royal Botanic Gardens in London. I explain how to avoid black backgrounds in macro photos, what drew me into photography for the first time, how I cull and pick the best photos out of a session, how many photos I usually take, etc. Enjoy!
The gear I used to take the photos in this video:
Camera: amzn.to/2xM776q
Lens: amzn.to/2JxyDLR
Flash (mounted with an adapter to fit my Sony camera): amzn.to/2XMhHou
Camera strap: amzn.to/2XMi4iS
Grip extension: amzn.to/2xHKsrR
The diffuser is of the brand DÖRR, and I bought it here: www.cyberphoto...
But there is a similar diffuser on Amazon: amzn.to/2LKnmKz
I filmed this video with my trusty action camera from Sony: amzn.to/2XGF2bf
I recorded the voiceover with a crappy mic in a hotel room, that is why the sound is a bit bad and uneven, sorry!

"Complete immersion in what you're doing. The feeling that time stops." That sums up my love of photography perfectly. I can ignore everything and everyone and just be. It also gets me out in nature, where I can fully relax.

I've been into photography (as a light and inconsistent hobby) for awhile now, but I was finally able to save up for a laptop this year so I can start editing more than just what's on my phone. I've always loved macro, looking at other people's photos and taking a few with filters. But now that I can edit and use the photos from my Cannon, I decided to start looking for a real macro lens a couple weeks ago. Your videos about it have convinced me to get this one. Thanks for the help! Amazing pictures by the way, and all your videos are very well done.

Kew is an awesome place for photos. Some day you should have a look at the Wetlands Centre that is quite near Kew. Also Richmond Park. BUT, if you are in London for a short time, Kew certainly lets you get it all in.

Hi, love your videos so keep up the good work. I wanted to ask how do you see your subject through the vf or live screen when at iso 100 and 1/250 shutter speed. I just have an almost black screen when shooting at those settings so would love some advice on that if someone knows what im doing wrong. Thanks in advance

Great video, Micael. @reynantem here from IG. I really wish I could visit a nearby botanical garden here too. It has been several years since I visited one. Those shots look stellar, by the way. Loving how simple and elegant you light and process them. With regards to the question from some of your viewers regarding showing the background while using the flash, what they can do is to first meter the scene and background, how they want it to look later, while keeping the shutter speed relatively high (250 or so). This might also mean that you would be increasing the ISO relatively high to compensate for the ambient light. Then they can turn on the flash and set to something pleasing. :) P.S. Just subscribed to your newsletter. Looking forward to more stuff and inspiration from you.

Keep up the good work!

May I know if TTL works on lenses without electronic like the laowa 60mm? Also, do you recommend using more powerful speedlights like the godox v860ii for macroshots? Thank you
@radudumitrescu1
@radudumitrescu1 5 лет назад
I have noticed TTL and manual lenses really don't get along. It exposes all over the place. Really hard to work with. I though it was just me. Manual mode for flash always works reliably and predictably. (I use a 4/50 Pentax macro + extensions)
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 5 лет назад
I'm actually not sure, because I never use TTL. I always have my flash in manual mode. But it shouldnt make a difference as the metering should work the same no matter what kind of lens you use.

Hi Micael, did you go to @WWTLondon as well, which is nearby to Kew, both are my most visited areas of London for insects and wildfowl, you probably would have seen more variety of insects at @WWTLondon as well frogs, toads, newts and beetles. I am lucky as I only live 20minutes away from both. Go and immerse yourself in the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust London and keep more of your images :) Great video by the way. Look forward to the next :)

@@MicaelWidell Hey Micael, I just thought, for the next visit you could do the Richmond Triangle, go to WWT London and then head south a very short distance to Isabella Plantation (Free entry) just search RU-vid for many videos and then after head back up to Kew Gardens, it might be tricky to do in a day, but certainly over a weekend is very doable and I think you would enjoy the variety of insects and small creatures you will find. Just a suggestion and perhaps something to look forward to on your next visit to Blighty :)

Great video again! I got interested in getting a diffuser like the one you are using here but it seems like Amazon does not have it anymore - it said discontinued! What else could I use instead. I like that it is easy to clip on to the lens and how inexpensive it is. I live in the Caribbean and would have to get something from this side of the world.

Also if you were buying the Laowa 60mm or 100mm macro, which would you choose? The cost is only $50 different and the EXIF and focusing while wide open seems like a nice feature on the 100mm. I saw your review of both but I wonder which you would choose if you could only have one. Thanks, awesome channel.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 5 лет назад
In the end of the 100mm video I explain why I prefer the 60mm. If you want a lightweight and small macro lens, the 60mm is best. If you don't care about weight and want good images even focused far away (10+ meters) + EXIF, get the 100mm. Image quality for macro photos is very similar.

Hey Thank you for the videos! I see that you use the 60mm this time. What’s the biggest difference between this and the 100mm? I might get the 60mm used, or the 100mm new.
@LieslHuddleston
@LieslHuddleston 5 лет назад
It is often a personal choice, I've used both a 60mm macro and 100mm macro on my Canon cameras and I personally prefer the 100mm because you have to get closer to your subject with the 60mm. But a friend of mine that I often go on photo walks with prefers the 60mm over the 100mm macro, she says she likes to be able to get much closer. We both have just as much fun and both take good photos with our choices. I found it just a little bit more of a challenge to focus with the 60mm as I always enjoy a shallow depth of field and shoot wide open at f/2.8 but that could also be that by the time I bought the 100mm I'd had a lot more practice :) Hope this helped and didn't confuse you even more. I'd be interested to hear which focal length Micael prefers.
@Igloovonzoo
@Igloovonzoo 5 лет назад
Liesl Huddleston thank you for your time and great respons. Think I have to go with the 100mm then, as I think I’m more like you, then your friend. As of now I’m using an old Pentax 100mm macro with Sony converter and 26mm tubes. It’s a bit cumbersome... @niclaswilhelm on insta.

Hi Micael, do you have macro lens recommendations. I shoot sony full frame and a budget of about $500 usd. I'm kinda looking for pros and cons of different focal lengths and how big a difference 1x vs 2x magnification is.
@MicaelWidell
@MicaelWidell 5 лет назад
I would buy the Laowa 60mm if you intend to use it mostly for macro (that lens kind of sucks for other uses on a full frame camera). It has 2x magnification and a reasonable price. It is also lightweight. I love it.
