Macrocytic Anemia | Megaloblastic vs Non-Megaloblastic | Approach & Causes
Macrocytic anemia is a condition with low hemoglobin and high MCV (mean corpuscular volume). Macrocytic anemia can be broken down into Megaloblastic and non-megaloblastic by looking at a blood smear. In this lesson, we discuss an approach to determining how to diagnose macrocytic anemia including distinguishing between megaloblastic and non-megaloblastic as well as looking at a variety of causes (including vitamin b12 and folate deficiencies).

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I THINK I CAN NOW COMMUNICATE WITH MY DOCTOR (S), OR RATHER SHARE THIS WITH THEM SO WE AND THEY CAN UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER ANDS INTERPRET THE EXPENSIVE LABS INSTEAD OF CONSISTENTLY CONTRADICTING EACH OTHER AND CONFUSING ME. I have never clearly understood my anemia until I watched and listened to your next step diagnosis diagrams and explanations with comprehensible definitions of the medical terms.

My mcv and mvh became high after having fifth disease can you talk about some common viral causes of temporary anaemia also interested in why the spleen can become symptomatic during common viruses like mono cmv or EBV and how that might effect blood? Dunno I just find it internet that certain viruses can have such a profound effect on blood and the spleen

Thank you for the information. I have had macrocytic anemia going on two years now. My physician has been simply redoing bloodwork and reconfirming, yup, still there, with no further diagnosis. I finally suggested a hemotogist referral. The hemotologist just ordered b12 and folate tests. Hopefully I have someone now who is really doing a diagnosis. This presentation I feel, gives me a clear diagnosis path. Thanks again.

I'm trying to figure mine out as well. B12 & folate are both not deficient but still low. I also have Hashimoto's. I'm concerned bc I'm having all the symptoms of B12 deficiency especially walking unbalanced & I'm so short of breath it's hard just doing anything. I'm also having some weird sensations in my head as well. My hemoglobin & hematocrit are normal but my ferritin is 19. I have been taking B12 & folate but not feeling much different. This has been going on for over a year and I'm at my breaking point. I also don't have medical insurance to get my mma tested or the other tests. I'm desperately seeking any info. Thank you.

@@lisacarle1686 your Ferritin is extremely low. You have iron deficiency without anemia.

In reality, I don't think you would need to check methylmalonic acid because you would replace both B12 and folate with supplements. You wouldn't replace just folate if B12 was low because that might precipitate neurological problems.

It is easier to be deficienct in folate that you think, many fortified foods are very low in folate and if you don't eat very healthy can easily happen.
