Hughe Keys-Berne who played ToeCutter.. he also played Immortan Joe in Fury Road (and got poster billing too. It was George Miller's way of thanking him. Hugh was an accomplished Shakesperian actor in the 70s...and the most experienced actor on that film.. and he basically whipped his "gang" into shape... making them a real unit.. going so far as to ride cross country with them to get into character.. so George credits him with giving Mad Max 1 its personally.
It's an origin story. Social order is coming apart, but it's not chaos yet. What happens here turns policeman Max, loving husband and father, into Mad Max. The original US release had all the actors dubbed, very badly, into US English by American voice actors, and it was excruciating to watch.

The Doctor Is In Fact: George Miller raised the money for Mad Max (1979) by working as an emergency room doctor. Shakespearean Villains Fact: Hugh Keays-Byrne and Tim Burns were both classically-trained Shakespearean stage actors. Hugh Keays-Byrne modeled his performance of Toecutter after historical records written about Mongolian warlord Temujin, also known as Genghis Khan. Tim Burns was so into Johnny The Boy character that he annoyed everyone on-set and was abandoned one day during lunch while handcuffed to the wreck. Vigilantes Gang Fact: The "get-out-of-jail-free card" that Goose (Steve Bisley) gives the triker was an on-set joke. Because of the limited budget, the biker gang was an actual biker gang (The Vigilantes), and they had to ride to the set each day in costume; often with their prop weapons displayed. Since the production company expected them to be pulled over by the local police, each was given a letter explaining the film's peculiar requirements, and asking for law-enforcement's understanding and cooperation. Most of the extras used in the film were paid in beer.
I saw this in Cape Town, South Africa. After the movie, guys were revving their engines for ages because they were so excited by the car-bike chases. Simple minds, right?
This is the movie that put Mel Gibson on the world map then made him a worldwide super star afterwards. His break out international movie and the start of a badass franchise ! It was the most profitable film ever made holding the record in the Guinness Book of Records for decades as the most profitable film ever created. It cost only 5,3 million dollars while making 200 million and this was back in 1979 , crazy !!!
watched this when i was a young lad on vhs,was epic movie,my teens were all about apocalypse and this one led the charge,quick fact,toe cutter is same actor as immortal joe in new madmax
#1 - Portions of it are phenomenal, other portions notsomuch. #2 - One of the greatest action movies ever and one of the most influential movies ever. Inspired an entire generation of copycats. #3 - Starts off much like the 2nd, extremely imaginative and interesting.... but half way through it took an offramp to an entirely different movie... still very much worth watching.
A bit of behind-the-scenes trivia if you can handle 4 quick paragraphs, lol: The first Max was made in1979 for an ASTONISHING $375,000 dollars (about $1.5 million as of 2024), and they only decided to set it in a "dystopian" future at the last second, to help explain why the gangs ruled the roads - becuase society itself was in a state of collapse. Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior) came out 2 years later in 1981, and had a budget of $4.5 million (or $15.5 million today), and was able to create a far more specific "post-apocalyptic" look that set the standard for many a crappy knock off and parody from films like Battletruck, The Bronx Warriors, Warriors of the Wasteland, and Mega Force, to the zany climax of Weird Science (which actually featured Vernon Wells from Max 2 playing a crazed biker again - you can also see him chew glorious scenery in Arnold's action classic, Commando). The opening of Max 2 clarified that there had been a nuclear war, and that after losing his family, Max drove off into "the Wasteland," suggesting that the first film was set in one of the few remaining "green places" that would be seen or mentioned in later episodes - like the middle section of part 3. Thunderdome had the biggest budget of the original "trilogy" at $10 million in 1985 (about $30 million today), and once again created a spectacular post-apocalyptic civilization akin to what you see in Fury Road; although instead of Gas Town, the Bullet Farm, or the Citadel, it took place in Barter Town and of course, "Beyond Thunderdome." Fury Road was originally set to be the last Gibson-led Max film - with Max and Furiosa ending up together - but it was delayed multiple times, neither director nor star were anxious to do it (because its been said they're VERY hard films to make both physically and emotionally), and then Mel had his public meltdown, which led to further delays. Finally, Miller decided to give the franchise a soft reboot, and cast Tom Hardy as Max, a decision he would live to regret as Hardy's "method" acting turned out to be a major pain on the set, with Hardy being openly cruel to Charlize Theron and the rest of the crew. Luckily, the script called for Max to lighten up by the film's end, so like his character, Hardy also lightened up before shooting was over, leading both Hardy and Theron to say they'd be willing to come back for another one. Hardy even publically admitted that he felt intimidated and a little upstaged by Theron, and would endeavor to be more professional in the future. Fury Road had a budget north of $150 million dollars (which would've equated to around $350 million in 1979). Furiosa has a budget of $168 million (about $390 million in 1979), so I expect it to be the biggest Max Saga film of all time. I don't know if or how Max will feature in it - I've heard he'll at least be mentioned - but I'm hoping they pay lip service to Lord Humongus, Barter Town, and/or Thunderdome. First isn't as much action but still good and mandatory viewing or you don't know why max is mad lol 2 is considered the best . Def post apocalypse but can also be slow at parts but really fast at others to make up for it . 3 is steady . Always has something going on and I think has the most rewatch value . Not sure why people give it sht . It's an awesome movie .
The night rider was crying because he’s a terminal psychotic. Meaning his high as a kite happy one moment then a crying baby the next. When Max was on his arse, he knew he was screwed.
This first movie is before the apocalypse, when life was relatively normal although the world was about to go to the trash because of the human decadence. The second one is already inside the apocalypse, after the third world war broke out and the world was in ruins and the second one is already similar to Fury Road, in fact that one will be inspired in the second and third movie of the saga.
The story behind this is George Miller set out to make a film based on his experiences as an Emergency Room medic (he was in med school) and the high number of road accidents he had to attend shocked him. They had a very low budget, like really low - to begin with it was not supposed to be post apocalyptic, but all the locations they had were so crummy they decided to change it to to that. This was also based on the fuel shortages in the 70s - he wondered what would happened if these were long term. So you have a society where fuel is in short supply and this has effected everyday life - infrastructure isn't maintained, jobs are becoming scarce etc all because the whole of society is based on oil and no alternative energy sources have been put in place. Crime is increasing and gangs are hijacking and stealing fuel meant for essential services. Its still a normal society with government, laws and the police, hospitals, TV etc but its starting to gradually fall apart, Its the start of the collapse - the first dominoes are just about to fall.
fun fact: this entire movie was filmed illegally on a budget of $350,000. Also the same actor who played toe cutter in this film also plays immortan Joe in Fury road. All the Mad Max films are in the same universe and its the same character in Fury Road even though Tom Hardy Plays Max, George Miller doesn't really care about continuity in these films its more so each film is its own contained story.
Watch the third it is really good. I do believe you might like it.If not groovy. But it is my fav movie. I love the OG movies but have not see the new ones yet.
This movie is more of an "origin story", the second movie advances the world building, and the third movie, (even though it has plenty to hate), still has enough good narrative points (especially in the second half) that it's still worth the watch. There are also graphic novels from this franchise that further develop the world prior to Fury Road. I'm an old-school fan, but even so, I rank this movie 3rd, while Fury Road has taken 1st place from The Road Warrior, which now drops to 2nd place for me.
Yes you should watch The Road Warrior. That's pretty much where the world of what you know of and have seen in Fury Road starts the Wasteland. Everything gets the apocalyptic look. Mad Max was a damn good start and incredible stunts and characters but The Road Warrior fleshes all out far more than this movie as Max said in Fury Road a world of blood and fire.
“Motorcycle riders account for 14% of all traffic accidents despite the fact only 3% of all registered vehicles are motorcycles. Motorcycle crashes also account for 17% of all vehicle accident fatalities” Very hard to argue that they aren’t dangerous. Doesn’t matter how good of a rider someone is, if someone else on the road hits them, the chances of their survival is a lot less than it would be if they were in a car.
@Xpertfusion as you said, if someone hits them. The road, in general, is dangerous. You can bring up statistics all you like, but it doesn't state whether it was the other person's fault that caused the crash, just that a motocycle was involved. Bad drivers will be bad drivers, regardless of motorcycles or cars. Yes, they have less of a chance of survival, but it isn't the motorcycles fault if they were hit by a dangerous driver. We could talk about this all day, so let's just agree to disagree .
@@abrimfulofasha it’s not about how easy/hard it is to get hit, it’s about the chances of survival when getting hit. And statistics (and logic), do kind of prove that it’s obviously a pretty high chance of dying when getting in a motor cycle accident, whereas it’s a lot lower in a car accident. Sure, at the end of the day, anyone can die in any vehicle at anytime, but I’m just talking about how much more dangerous they are than cars, which is objectively true. Doesn’t mean no one should ever ride them, do what you wanna do, I just personally wouldn’t take that risk myself and don’t think others should. But again, you do you.
@Xpertfusion is not a risk to me, especially if you're vigilant and careful on the road. No one can predict what's going to happen, no, but in my eyes, cars and motorcycles are equally dangerous depending on the driver . You could have a complete maniac driving a car and a really sane and diligent person riding a bike. What are the odds of that car creating a crash over the motocycle? Cars tend to trap people inside them when there's a massive wreck, and when it catches flames, then it's over. It's harder to pull someone out of a car than it is to either jump away from the motorcycle or lift it off of you. Again, there are pros and cons to both, and I believe they're both equally dangerous depending on the driver.
The first two were the best ones of the lot the third one is a mixed bag it felt too hollywood-esk but 1, 2 and Fury Road redeemed the films very australian and plenty of action and none of them used CGI it was all done practically. This was set before the apocalypse happened though you can see bits of society starting to break down in this film.
If i recall right society is still holding on in this film but due to oil and coal reserves getting low society falls apart in the second film ,but the governments are still there which led to the nuclear exchange, the Apocalypse happens between the second and third film. I really hope Furiosa isn't just another girl boss film where she's beating up men twice her size.
I know. I never said otherwise. Me saying it reminds me of Saw was not indicating that this movie "copied" Saw. I was actually implying quite the opposite, that Saw likely took inspiration from this movie (I don't use the word "copy" because like you said, cutting off your foot to survive is a very general concept)
