Hugh Keays-Byrne plays Toe Cutter here and plays Immortal Joe in Mad Max Fury Road. What a great actor and a nice tribute. RIP

This came out I was in high school ...all the car geeks and action movie guys were talking about it. Finally gave in a year or so later,saw it and impressed, its becone a favorite classic..the post apocoliptic, dystopian, hanging on on the fringes of...?...no cities mentuined only vast countryside areas off limit...that becomes a fight for resources, a wasteland and the decent into anarchy, and total social disintegration over the course of the sequels....that was the early 80s Day After zeitgeist

I saw Mad Max in the theatre when it came out. I loved it. This movie put Australia on the map. I'm Canadian and from 1980-86 Australian movies were brilliant and rocked the world! After Mad Max came, "Breaker Morant"(1980), "Gallipoli"(1981)(Mel Gibson), "The Road Warrior"(1981)(Mel Gibson), "The Man From Snowy River"(1982)(The highest grossing Aussie film until Dundee), "The Year of Living Dangerously"(1982)(Mel Gibson), "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome"(1985)(Mel Gibson), "Crocodile Dundee"(1986). All of these are great movies!!

Thanks for that. I am Belgian and we never payed any attention to the ozzies except maybe for Neighbors and Flying Doctors. Of all those you mentioned it was only Mad Max and Crocodile Dundee that made a splash over here.

A terminal crazy... only I got a bronze badge to say I'm one of the good guys." Fun Fact: George Miller raised the money for Mad Max (1979) by working as an emergency room doctor. Shakespearean Villains Fact: Hugh Keays-Byrne and Tim Burns were both classically-trained Shakespearean stage actors. Hugh Keays-Byrne modeled his performance of Toecutter after historical records written about Mongolian warlord Temujin, also known as Genghis Khan. Tim Burns was so into Johnny The Boy character that he annoyed everyone on-set and was abandoned one day during lunch while handcuffed to the wreck. Vigilantes Gang Fact: The "get-out-of-jail-free card" that Goose gives the triker was an on-set joke. Because of the limited budget, the biker gang was an actual biker gang (the Vigilantes), and they had to ride to the set each day in costume; often with their prop weapons displayed. Since the production company expected them to be pulled over by the local police, each was given a letter explaining the film's peculiar requirements, and asking for law-enforcement's understanding and cooperation.

The really amazing thing, after appearing in three Mad Max films (about an angry, unstable man with a dead wife) four Lethal Weapon films (about an unstable man with a dead wife), an adaptation of Hamlet (about a man who pretends to be mad with a dead girlfriend) and Braveheart (about an angry man with a dead wife), is that they cast a completely different Antipodean in 'Gladiator' (about an angry, unstable man with a dead wife - called Max, no less!)

Even though we had to put up with the dubbed voices we still loved it. Some of the dub was stupid and I finally saw the original the toe cutters voice shocked me he sounded a lot softer than the dubbed he was more gruff but i appreciated not hearing dubbed voices.

It is said that there were a lot of Australian biker movies as they followed up on the American trend during the 70s. In its self Mad Max isn't all THAT special but it did stand out imo bc of the unusual pov shots which they didn't do as much in the 2nd and reintroduced them in the 3rd. Also because of the build up of the story. The further you go the more appocalyptic it becomes, which makes the story kind of plausible. It's enriched with myth and fantasy yet still plausible. What i like about the 1st one is it being RAW af, the forementioned pov's, the music score & acting... and an amazing sense of nostalgia if you saw it as a little kid when the VCR came out or it happened to be on tv. Back in those days you even got fascinated for an hour just watching the cover of the rental video. I miss that kind of art work. I like how you take your time to explain your viewing experience and don't put it behind a paywell.. You got yourself a sub !!

I first saw The Road Warrior when I was at University in the 1980's. I went back to see Mad Max as his origin story, and really enjoyed the contrast. I'll be watching your reaction to The Road Warrior next. I'll watch your reaction to Beyond Thunderdome, but it is my least favorite of the series. I really loved Fury Road and think the reboot was exceptionally well done.

Hey gunlean, yeah! Most definitely and the great thing is, I have now! I've seen 2 & 3 and they'll be coming soon to the channel. Not next film reaction (which is "12 Angry Men") but the one after will be Mad Max 2! Yeah 2 was the sort of thing I was expecting, but 3... WOW. I loved the elements of telling the stories of the civilisation 🙌

Can't think of a favourite scene, I do enjoy rewatching it and have introduced my sons to this great film many years ago now... I like the second and third one, they are both similar to Fury Road in their own way. Fury Road is a shiny & chrome film that should be witnessed as well imo. P.S. The speedo on the bike is in KPH, not MPH..... You've never ridden bikes before have you. :)

Its been soooo long that i dont remember the movie, but somehow i vividly remember the characters. I also remember being really confused at how the level of dytopia is so different between this and the next movie. Finally: of my goodness Mel is young in this.

As a kid I used to watch this and wonder exactly what was supposed to have happened to turn Australia into a wide open wasteland with little settlements and townships connected by vast empty roads. Then I realised that it was just set in Australia. However, I hear ya re the level of dystopia - and I rather like the way that you can surmise that this first film shows us a world still just about hanging together but close to final collapse. It still feels like the next one completely changes the continuity, but hey, who cares?

I think Mad Max 1 was supposed to be a dystopian future but BEFORE the bombs, and then Mad Max 2 is after the bombs. I think.

I saw this in the theaters in the states when it originally came out and was upset that they had dubbed it with American accents.

Oh my god, THEY DID?! That's awful. I hadn't a clue that they'd done that in cinemas! I'd heard that they'd dubbed a version of it, but presumed that was for TV or a later release. Sounds utterly pointless when the original was so much better and sounds fantastic. Thank you for letting me know, it's always great to find out things like this!

The thing no one gets about this movie is that the population in this movie were meant to be like a bunch of kids who survived the collapse of modern society, so all the goofiness and immaturity in how they act is akin to what would happen if “Lord of the Flies” happened in a 20th Century modern society. But a lot of Americans just think all the bizarre character behavior, costume choices, and dialogue is just a result of how Australians are.

My older brother lied to me about this movie when I was a kid, he swore it was Queens Brian May, he tried to convince me there were 20 of the car and they used a different car for every scene, he tried to convince me that the undercranking to speed up the film was literally real time speed the cars and motorcycles did and he had no idea the voices were dubbed over for the U.S. release. My brother is a f*cking liar. He also told me they were all wearing leather uniforms and that's how cops dress down under. Even though Mel Gibson was the only one in real leather. People don't seem to notice that the bikers R worded both the guy and his girlfriend and obliterated their car. The man was running half naked with blood running from his crack. Another thing my brother lied to me about, the blower on the car is fake, my brother told me it was real.

I'd say this first movie is a PRE-apocalypse movie. The rest are post apocalypse though. Max, already damaged and mad before, probably managed the transition better than most. Sure, in the intro to The Road Warrior we get to know that Mad Max takes place in a world in total conflict because of fuel shortage. But it was still better than the post nuclear war world of the sequels. *** Very mild spoiler warning! (mentioning characters and actors from sequels below) *** The only thing I get hung up on with the second and third movies are that some characters are very similar, like Bruce Spence playing two VERY similar characters in them. I wasn't alone thinking Jedediah in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was The Gyro Captain that had adopted The Feral Kid. For a while I even thought Blaster was actually Benno from Mad Max.

@@SirHumphrey498 Unfortunately, I think the vengefulness of that gang probably ended both granny Swaisey (played by the late great Sheila Florance) and Benno soon after they started fighting back. Not sure life as Blaster would have been a happier fate though...

I have yet to see any Star Wars (other than a few scenes from one of them and also seeing The Rise Of Skywalker in cinemas as a friend wanted to see it) and they are all on the list to watch... although it's daunting coming into the franchise so late. A lot of Mad Max fans in North America are unaware or have forgotten what an unfortunate, abortive release the first film received in the U.S. in 1979. Distribuor Roger Corman of New World pictures thought the Down Under dialog would confuse American audiences so he replaced absolutely all of it with American dubbing artists. The effect was stunningly wooden and the release sank quickly without a trace, ending up on U.S. home video in the same compromised form for years. Only strong word of mouth on the Midnight Movies/revival screening circuit, based on undubbed prints, built the film's reputation in the States and then Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior.

Saw this in a double bill with Mad Max 2 in the 80s. Oddly I we watched part 2 before part 1, just cos back then you could enter a cinema at any time. At the time I preferred the first one to the second, but over the years I've grown to love part 2 more and more.

Great reaction, great watching you journey in to the Mad Max world. You picked up on things I have never noticed before. I didn't see this film until the mid eighties but was impressed with it. Wow, it really did get to you with what happened to Max's family, shows how much the film drags you in. :thumbs up. I first saw this on a copy of a copy of a rental VHS in the early 1980's. Unfortunately, it was the original U.S. release which was dubbed with American voice actors. The dubbing was really off putting and sort of ruined it for me. Several years later, I saw it in all it's Aussie glory and I found it much more palatable. It's far from a perfect film, but considering the infinitesimal budget and the first-time director, it's really quite impressive. It's engaging, visually captivating, and the characters are fantastic. Speaking of which, the same actor portrays the main villains in both this and in Fury Road. I do love this film and watch it at least once every year or so, but Mad Max 2 is and always will be my favorite in the series. That one will unquestionably come closer to your expectations.

What does this film mean to me? It is an Aussie staple, like Vegemite. There is only one, real Mad Max, and it didn't happen in the landscape that most foreigners visualise. It happened in my familiar home state of Victoria. And I don't buy into this recent fad of calling sequels franchises. See what I did there?

A couple of the films you have reacted to are like dysphoric looks at a future Earth with society having declined to poor examples of what mankind is capable of if they follow an unhealthy path, and one to decay instead of following a healthy path....if you want to see both an ICONIC film that shows one kind of situation like this, followed by a fairly decent more recent sequel, then you absolutely MUST react to both the original "Blade Runner", followed by "Blade Runner 2049".

I love this movie, an all time favorite. Really enjoyed your reaction and looking forward to Mad Max II The Road Warrior. I enjoyed Fury Road but I've seen it a couple times and I'm good whereas I have watched the originals countless times and will watch them again and again as well as any reactions to them. I have not watched a reaction to Fury Road, even though they did a lot of practical stunts and car wrecks there was still too much CGI for my liking. For me the CGI just takes the realism out of it. The Road Warrior is my overall favorite for a few reasons but I love this one for the story of how he becomes Mad Max. Thank You!

I like to compare peoples perception of this movie series to that of the Friday the 13th series. That's because in both series, the first movie really doesn't fit with the rest of the series.

@@karlydoc Hey Karly, it's funny you mention that, as that is what I usually do and I do actually have those films on my list to watch as suggested films! So keep an eye out. I do get requests for more watched/popular films sometimes too though (I don't know if these are). The Mad Max films were a Patreon request for only a third film, so needed to watch the previous two first. I always try to keep it diverse in genre and try to do lesser reacted to films, but there will be a few. @@karlydoc Oof, yeah, I know what you mean! I've seen that a lot too and it's something I try to stray from. That's why I tend to diversify since I started, I carefully choose from my suggested list by subscribers and also a few I think would be interesting. Sometimes on poll a most voted for will be a film a lot of RU-vidrs are doing, but mostly not (from what the community has said anyway). One film I've watched for the channel recently is "The Time Travellers", which was asked for by quite a few and I dont think is popular among other reactors. I do think most reactors see what's trending/popular and jump on the bandwagon to try to get the most views. However, I don't do that and only go for a more "popular" one if I'm interested in it at the time or if requested. Another thing most reactors do, is see what their viewers want them to react to and do those, which inevitably will likely be those films that they have watched another content creator do. This could possibly where the over saturation comes from. Whilst I do love getting suggestions, I try to pick those that aren't popular, or at least not at that time if they are a well known film. It's because of the RU-vid copyright system. Doing it this way allows me to still play some audio for context for the viewer without causing it to flag with copyright. Showing more film footage with the audio flags it up and can sometimes cause videos to be blocked too. The RU-vid copyright system has changed somewhat multiple times, so it's figuring out the best way to edit it and still keep is watchable. If I were to just show the film and keep cutting to certain segments, which can still be done, you wouldn't see nearly as much. Plus, I give commentary on certain things that come to mind at the time too, which again is both for commentary and for keeping away copyright claims, as it interrupts the film playing and isn't as likely to flag up with issues. I am trying to constantly work on altering my editing style and whilst I agree I did show a lot more face shots in previous videos and wasn't ideal in some instances, it does help in long explanatory scenes in films as I can keep most dialogue in for context in scenes. As it stands with changing that, which I have been trying to do in newer videos to refrain from just showing my face for some instances... but as I mentioned it has started to flag up copyright claims. I am always trying to work on changing things up though, so thank you for watching what you did anyway
