@@vonnyb9052 I mean I get it: New generation unfamiliar with things/figures that were cultural icons at the time. It was just interesting how much of that effect comes from culture and what's occurring in it at the time of release, and how much of that falls away after the years pass. It'd be like if Mariah Carey or JLo appeared in Fury Road as the major female antagonist. And recorded songs for the movie.

I really like how each Mad Max story is basically it’s own individual short story or novella. It kind of reminds me of the old Robert E. Howard Conan stories, where he’s just a wanderer who’s put in a bunch of odd situations, but often ends up saving either a person or group of people & he generally ends up alone at the end.

I couldn't really accept Fury Road as a real Mad Max movie until I saw all three sequels as different stories, retold through generations, of this mythological figure wandering the wilderness. Perhaps the first film is the only true story?
@swaswj414
@swaswj414 3 года назад
@@donkfail1 That's been my thought. The only thing consistent in the later movies are the injuries Max received from the first, notably his limp, making me think these are all legends. In all three sequels, Max is a savior figure to a new group and never gets to enjoy peace for himself.

My Great Grandpa worked on Mad Max 3: Beyond the Thunderdome. he worked as a Safety Officer for the Railway Lines in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. when he used to tell us that when he met Mel Gibson and Tina Turner, he didn't really care or showed any exciting reactions, instead he just got to work and got the job done which in my opinion, shows true commitment . he just thought "oh look, movie stars, cool". he also worked as a Safety Officer again but for a commercial. One of the principal ideas behind this series is that Max is effectively a legendary character. This wandering warrior that keeps getting involved in OTHER people’s stories, which causes them to tell legends about him. Hence the inconsistencies (like Max being too young in Fury Road: he should be at least 55 there): they’re tall tales. Based on truth, but distorted in places since the stories have mutated and been embellished over time. The other major theme is the fall of man and mankind coupled with redemption. The world and Max have the same journey. In the first film, the world is on the brink of societal collapse, and Max is turned into an unfeeling monster by his trauma. In the second film, society has fully collapsed, and Max has become a specter with no humanity left, but by the end, he learns to care a little bit again, and there’s a spark of hope in the world. In the third film, Max is still stoic, but less-monstrous than he was at the beginning of the second, while what’s left of the world, in the meantime, has endured a nuclear exchange. But, at the end, Max, at last, is redeemed through sacrifice, and so is the world, in a way, with The Tribe That Stayed flourishing in the river canyon, and The Tribe That Left rejuvenating Sydney.
@ChileandRamen

In Fury Road "Max" has an item that "he" gave to some one in The Road Warrior, it makes me think that he's more of a successor "Max" carrying on the legend.
@Enkijamenk
@Enkijamenk 3 года назад
@@ChileandRamen Works as a potential literal interpretation, sure, if you're intent on making all four films work as literal continuity. Also deals with the problem of the state of the world in Fury Road, namely that the apocalypse feels very distant, far in the past, with only the oldest remembering the time before. Though that doesn't jive with Max himself saying he "was a cop," and he's STILL wearing a few fragments of his old MFP uniform. Again, I do think the tall tales thing works best, and it is what George Miller has said is the vague intent. The only film that's Max's story is the first one, and even that is likely as told by one of the other MFP officers. Road Warrior is, of course, as told by the Feral Kid, and is really the Gyro Captain's story, though the Feral Kid was so little, he's likely getting lots of details wrong. Beyond Thunderdome is literally "The Tell" as told by Savannah Nix, who's probably a more-reliable narrator than the other two, and it's really her story, anyway. And Fury Road is Furiosa's story, probably as told by Capable.

@@Enkijamenk thanks for this breakdown! is the character's internal (almost unwitting/unwilling) M.O is that of a self-sacrificing, ready to be totally used savior to those in need, because of his past failure as a cop and husband(?) ...which kinda makes sense of the "Mad" part of the title/his monacher? & your thoughts on this to preferably be a short Netflix series, rather than albeit great movies so far apart, by a visionary creator who is getting on in years?
@Enkijamenk
@Enkijamenk 3 года назад
@@6WaysToSomeday Oh, my, yes. He has classic "Samaritan Syndrome." He has two modes: feels nothing, exists as a ghost, an animal, only concerned with survival; or actually cares enough to get involved, which may involve him actively-looking for his death out of survivor's guilt in the process. He's looking for redemption, whether he realizes it or not. As for a new series, I'm all for it. I'm no gatekeeper. I'm always excited about anything being done with a milieu that I'm fond of, and curious to see what happens with it. The sorts of fans that declare themselves arbiters of a specific fandom are just.... Ugh. Mad Max would make one hell of an anthology-style series (with an optional overarching "mythology" arc).

It is true that there is an unintended difference in the movies. That makes them feel disconnected. It is due to the time elapsed between its years of production. and also the fact that the director, although he had a basic idea of the world of Mad Max, could not make it with all the film technology that was required to let the imagination fly. I personally have a method so that none of these discrepancies affect my enjoyment of the Mad Max world. It is imagining that each movie corresponds to the story of a third person. People who knew the legend and had a tangential relationship with the man. But each one tells the legend in their own way.

The reason this movie is so wacky is bc the director George Miller couldn’t finish it due to the fact that his good friend/producer on every Mad Max film up to this point (Byron Kennedy) died in a helicopter crash while scouting filming locations for this movie. He was so distraught that he stepped down & someone else finished the movie. That’s why it feels so dark at the beginning then turns into the Lost Boys from Neverland.

Bit of clarification on that story. Miller took on Ogilive as a co-director to help him get through it, he never started alone then left the film, they worked together sharing the workload (Miller did the action scenes, Ogilive the non action scenes), George has clarified this in interviews over recent years and the movie turned out as originally intended. Byron died a year before filming started and Miller plowed on with it to get over his grief.

If you've already watched Fury Road, you should have figured out by now that Max is basically a ronin, a warrior who just does what is right, regardless of what happens to him. That's why in Road Warrior, that was the title given to him by those how got away. And then in Thunderdome, they gave him another name-a hero. In Fury Road, it was just Max. Each time he ends up selflessly helping others, even though initially all of it were purely selfish reasons. But in the end, he is the hero in the end. And wants no recognition except for some gas so he can move on. All four movies are awesome in their own way. All different situations and how Max reacts to those situations. But he always ends up a loner, 'going my own way.'

aunty allow max to live because in the end he did what they agree. He separate the body from the brain. She kept her part. plus the original deal was max life for 24 hours in service of the town and later kill the body. Max did survive 24 h and manage to ''keep'' the deal with aunty intact. Acording to her, she did build the town, so we can guess she is able to rebuild. So there was no reason to kill max.

There's two things to remember with these films. 1) only the first film is Max's story. The other films, Max is a prominent character, but they're other people's stories. 2) The stories are told by different people each time, and stories change in the telling. These are legends from the wasteland being retold, adapted and exaggerated to suit the teller's style. Which is why the exact details, timelines, etc are blurred.

The lovely young lass, whom I thought, when I first saw this movie, was going to be Mad Max's newest "fling," (even though that never actually comes about, in any of his movies) is called Helen Bedey. I was so strongly attracted to her when I first saw this film (because I was thirteen when I first saw it). The one outstanding physical feature of this character, for me at least, was her pretty face. But also the great-looking "stems" below her waist. That's why, whenever I rewatch this movie, I always call Helen's character by my favorite nickname: LEGS!!!

Can remember when this movie came out and seeing it in the theaters and just about everyone in the audience LAUGHED when Tina Turner's name appeared on the big screen. After the movie, everyone definitely changed their minds and said she did an excellent job. Since this was an apocalyptic world, the kids were told to use their imaginations in how their world should be depicted. Think they did an awesome job visualizing the end of the world.

The gyro guy in part 2 isnt the same character in part 3. The original actor that was supposed to play the pilot got sick at the last minute and the gyro actor took over. But its not supposed to be the same guy.

I've seen fan theories that claim that the Gyro Captain and Jedediah the Pilot could be the same character (even though Miller says they're not). This film is set at least a decade after The Road Warrior, and one theory was that the Gyro Captain led the Great Northern Tribe until his wife died (possibly in childbirth) then left to raise his son alone in the desert. It's also worth noting that Jedediah seems to recognise Max when he sees him in Bartertown; the usual assumption is that he simply recognises him as the guy whose truck he stole, but then he only saw him from a distance and Max had his face covered. So does he know him from somewhere else...? Point being, if you want to believe it's the same guy, there's enough there to support it up to a point.

Some of your audience don't seem to understand the timeline of this series. The collapse of society already started before the first film. The major cities get wiped out by a nuclear war. The first film takes place in a small town in the hinterlands when current-day civilization is starting to break down (the gangs start to control the roads). By the time of the second film, society has regressed to the point of no more gasoline being refined.

It’s a very good film, taken in context of the story arc of Max throughout the first 3 films.. His ambivalence in the 2nd film resulted in his comeuppance, and he’s clearly no longer that way.. He’s gonna pick a side, no matter what side, so he takes the hit man job for the cash... But he can’t do it because he isn’t evil, either.. Then he stumbles into a situation much like the second film, but different, and he chooses to be involved... Even if it means living out his life in obscurity.. Oddly, both paths lead to the same result in a post apocalyptic world..

The original Mad Max trilogy is basically about Max' humanity. In the first one he loses it in the end. The second one is about Max' life without it and the third one is he regaining it again. EDIT: typos

I watched all the movies as a kid in the 80's but watching them again years later I realized that the first one is the only "true" story of who Max is, and all the sequels are folk tales people tell about him based on the time when they interacted with this lone wanderer of the wastes who seemed like an asshole but ended up helping them and sacrificing himself in the process so he became this mysterious hero in their story and the Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome and Fury Road are not supposed to be literal narrations of what actually happened, at least not exactly. So Max becomes this mythic figure lots of people in post-apocalyptic Australia have met but no one really knows, and he can be Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy and in one movie know the Gyrocopter Pilot but in the next one not know him as a Plane Pilot and the Interceptor keeps coming back after being destroyed, and so on. The details don't matter, as long as the main story is about this wanderer who keeps getting mixed up in stuff that has nothing to do with him and ends up helping the needy and moving on. It's actually kind of genius.

The reason for the subplot with the kids is due to the storyline being lifted from a book(there was a lawsuit even IIRC) and kids and a post apocalyptic wasteland and the pilot. It was blended with the original part of the Max universe. There was a ton of re-writes to the original script by many people.

I believe the best way to view these as separate times and fables that feature a man named Mad Max...each told by a different person with a unique perspective and experience that intersected with The Man Named Mad Max. That's why each one is so different from the next...just like a game of telephone the stories get muddled, exaggerated and glorified over time. None of these are actually narrated by Mad Max but by someone else that is REMEMBERING him and his deeds. By the fourth movie you can tell because HE ISN'T REALLY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN ANY OF THE MOVIES, he's the glue that binds them all together but the main character is always whoever Max is helping or saving.

OK, since people below were discussing Bruce Spence playing The Gyro Captain and The Airplane Captain. Another actor was supposed to play in MM III. However, he had injury or was otherwise unavailable. So at the last moment George Miller called Bruce Spence who agreed to play the role. I think they missed an opportunity. I would make him the Gyro Captain's younger brother (or a twin) with Max doing a double take there...

@@pedrojsamarripa that's a good fun fact. although I would like some characters revived to show a bit of continuity or easter egg. I wanted the wild child in road warrior to appear as an adult in thunderdome just for that, although his story pretty much concluded in road warrior. I'm just amazed how these low budget movies became a cult classic and probably turned into masterpieces. anyway, I think I might rewatch beyond thunderdome tonight.

@pedrojsamarripa
@pedrojsamarripa 3 года назад
@@Fardawg I get it from the places you mentioned. Nowhere concrete, so I could be wrong. Things like that happen when people make movies. Some are obviously well documented. I recently was reading about how in Terminator 2, when the two terminators first fight in the mall, the guy snapping off pictures with his mouth hanging open is the same actor portraying the cop from the first Terminator that Arnold steals the cop car from and he recognizes the Terminator from his encounter in 1984. Apparently this is straight from James Cameron. But since I read it in a random article probably about Avatar 2&3 I can’t site it. Either way it’s just “fun” to take it as character continuation if you choose.

The role of myth and legend pays heavily in this. Joseph Cambell was a major influence for this series and Star Wars. The below is from the wiki... "Campbell's concept of monomyth (one myth) refers to the theory that sees all mythic narratives as variations of a single great story. The theory is based on the observation that a common pattern exists beneath the narrative elements of most great myths, regardless of their origin or time of creation. " The stories resonate because they are more than an 'action hero story', they are legendary. In the Mad Max cycle we see how history becomes legend, which becomes myth, which becomes hope. These are your deep thoughts for the day. Carry on, with hope.

The actor was from both films, but he wasn't supposed to be in this one. the actor hired couldn't do the role, and he was called in after production, and principal filming had already started. So even though it's the same actor; it's not the same character as in Mad Max 2

Yes, that is the same actor in the two different movies. Bruce Spence wasn't supposed to be in the movie but was a last minute addition. And no, it is not the same character which is why he and Max don't recognize each other in this movie. It's just a coincidence that they both operate air vehicles.
