I'm reluctant to be "that" person, but I was in the 5th grade, my whole family were Mad Max (1) and Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior nuts when Beyond Thunderdome was released in theaters. I have two brothers, 5 years older and 9 years older. This is the first movie I had ever seen in a movie theater (my folks only took us to drive-ins), AND the first time she let my eldest take us on our own somewhere. So, yeah. I can say, "I was THERE, MAN!" There being the State Theaters, 6990 65th Street, Sacramento, CA. (I Google Mapped the location, it's not a theater anymore.) But the whole experience had me fit to burst.
I remember back in the theater when the film started with this gigantic sound, it was a moment when you really knew why you were going to the cinema! The days when cinema was magical...
And no stupid cell phones. Most people had the common sense to keep chatter to a minium too. Most still respected other movie goes to shut their yappers. Besides children and some teenagers. Who you'd cut slack because they were just kids, boyfriend/ girlfriends stuff.
I remember watching this opening night in Westwood by UCLA and the second the credits rolled the audience let out a massive cheer that just rocked the theater like being in a stadium for a rock concert. I mean it really bopped you over the head that you were in for a great show.
Yesterday Tina Turner passed away. Somewhat coincidental that I was recently discussing with someone what I think are the greatest movie intros of all time and this was at the top of the list. Although many would disagree, “Beyond Thunderdome” will always be my personal favorite of the Mad Max films, and she really made it what it is, not only with her screen presence but the soundtrack. Interestingly someone in the RU-vid comments for this video remarked “just think of how cool it would have been to watch this intro in the theater when the film came out”. This person obviously “gets it”, and the ironic thing is the opening is just a black screen and the credits rolling with her singing. It’s hard to grasp how larger than life things were in the 80’s, and she’s one example of that.
Came here for Tina, but also for my love of the Mad Max movies. I was around 10 when Beyond Thunderdome came out and having seen and loved The Road Warrior and Mad Max, I was stoked for Thunderdome, to say the least. My father wasn't the kind of dad that did a whole lot with his children, but I did manage to get him to take me to the theater to see this one a few weekends after the opening. I don't remember his reaction to this intro, but I sure as hell remember mine and its a feeling I haven't forgotten to this day. Thanks to whoever put this up! I have watched it many times just for the intense feeling of nostalgia I get and memories of my youth. It's such a simple opening scene as far as graphics and headers go, which is very much what I like in opening credit scenes. See the Coen Brothers opening for "No Country for Old Men" or even John Carpenter's "The Thing" (after the spaceship crash opening) for similar openings. Thunderdome is different because of the epic music by Tina Turner and it wouldn't have been the same without her. Bravo, Tina! Long live Mad Max!
An under rated timeless score by Maurice Jarre. Having said that, his son Jean Michel Jarre is also extremely gifted rather like Mike Oldfield. Thanks for sharing the opening sequence and credits. ❤
Can you believe, they've now done all her 80s albums from Private Dancer on in some form of deluxe, and released a 3 disc boxed set and still none of the monkeys that clearly people record exec positions have gotten it right. The full version of this still remains unreleased. It's a disgrace at this point. I've got such a bee in my bonnet.
I love the way the movie title appears in time with the music and SFX. I feel like not enough moviegoers appreciate a good opening title sequence anymore, even when it's very simplistic like this one.
One of the best opening credits ever...and also one of the most straight forward and non fussy, but it makes a HUGE impact. I prefer this version of "One of the Living" to the version they released for the airwaves. More raw.
Totally agree. This was the better arrangement of the song. Punchier. More dramatic. Never released commercially, which pisses me off. I have the single version Tina put out. Not as hard hitting musically. And am I the only bloke thinks the opening to this movie is brilliant?
I was in the US Navy docked in Freemantle, Western Australia when Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome first hit their theatres,, my shipmates and I saw this movie in Perth over and over again it was such a big hit! We were drunk half the time but seeing this now brings back those memories of the land down under!
Heard Tina's passing. This was the first thing I thought of and blasted loud in her honor. One of the best damn intros from my childhood. RIP Auntie. ; ;7
I had typical 80’s parents who let me watch stuff that most parents would never let younger kids watch now. I was 6 when this movie came out and watched it regularly. Can you imagine how awesome this movie experience felt with the imagination of a 6 yr old? It was freaking awesome!
Similar. My parents let me watch ANYTHING. I think I was about 5 when I watched Alien on VHS. Neither Me nor my parents batted an eyelid. Now I actively shove things like Robo-cop in front of my 8 year old and she's scared to watch it. I feel I've failed her somehow! 😂
It made me want to dig a complex underground tunnel system in the dirt alley next to our house. I got as far as digging one really big pothole that almost damaged my aunt's car, lol
@@studyguy.7660 I hope so. Could be in storage in a vault owned by Tina Turner's inheritors and/or Warner Bros. Might be leaked or found around the release of Mad Max 5.
Wait you mean the song? One of the Living is a full song, it's on the soundtrack album for the movie. Been listening to it for decades. It was even released as a single in 1985 and went to #15 on Bil;board!
Jonah Falcon Do not get me wrong. Beyond Thunderdome is good. But NOWHERE near as epic like Mad Max 2:The Road Warrior. Hollywood got to George Miller when he made Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. PG 13 and Mad Max do not mix.
The best part of this credits sequence (other than the entire song) is just the quick bit of the wind blowing and then boom, the piano/drum beat and "MEL GIBSON". This intro don't fuck around and waste time.
I think this is one of the most exciting opening credits track, from the desert-like wind sounds at the very beginning (very appropriate for a Mad Max movie) followed by some cool drums, whooshing sounds with the title, and then a cool 1 or 2 second yell at 30 seconds. so awesome. I saw this in theaters when I was around 15. awesome trilogy.
Yeah. I think you nailed it. This has got to be one of the best opening credits I have ever seen. Just playing the desert wind over the Warner Brothers logo was awesome. And that whoosh-bang when "MAD MAX" Shows up on the screen gave me chills in the theater as a kid. Then Tina's fading "yahoo" as the desert vista comes into view as pure awesome.
I was in the Navy and happened to hit port in Perth in '85 the week the film opened there. It was a packed house and giant screen and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" pressed me down into my seat and kept me there for two hours. Still one of my best memories and yes, one of the best opening sequences ever. Hoping one day to buy a big enough screen to try and duplicate that experience, after I warn the neighbors first.
I was born in 1996. These Movies were my damn childhood. My father had every single one. I still remember when VHS was a thing, and I loved this movie. I have huge respect for George miller for creating Mad Max.
@@eternalbliss13 i was born in 2002, and is perfectily compreensible for me your comment, in my chilldhood i was influencied by the 80s, movies, musics and games, look, i am brasziliam, in my country in the 2000s in tv chanels every day have a 80s movie, my neightborns every week listening a 80s music, and eventualy i playng a 80s game
0:15 onwards is pure 80s awesomeness. Sure I prefer the logo of the original and it's just words on a black screen, but the Tina Turner song "One of the Living" does get me pumped. And yes, it blows that this version of the song never got released. The one we've got is fine, but compared to this... OMG, I love that song. Sometimes, I imagine if I was in the world of Mad Max, I would listen to this while driving through the wasteland.
Thank you for posting this! I remember this opening as a kid and the impact it had; setting the tone for a great tale. The best Mad Max movie. Rest in Power, Tina Turner!!
Utterly fantastic! The first Mad Max film I saw in the theater. Was so pumped and was not let down one bit. All the Mad Max films are great with Road Warrior of course being the best IMO. RIP to the Great Tina Turner!
Like others here have mentioned, I was in the theater in NYC (in 1985) watching this opening on the big screen, and it was as BIG as those of you who didn't experience it then think it was. Mel and Tina were good together in this film. I wish they would/could somehow team up together again in another film.
YES! That's the spirit! 1985 was the GREATEST YEAR EVER: Commando, Rambo 2, Mad Max 3, Rocky 4, Back to the Future... No doubt: GREATEST INTRO SONG EVER ! Man, I always flip in ethusiasm every time I listen to this MASTERPIECE. Ah Tina Turner... you made the 80's better... ...even better than the Official record version in the Soundtrack Album. COOLEST MOVIE MUSICAL THEME EVER.
I know the explanation why. Because when this intro started 30-40 years ago we all knew that we are going to witness something magnificent and out of ordinary, a masterpiece of a movie. Which will unfortunately never happen in the movie history especially not after the year 2000. 90 percent of the movies are pure garbage and CGI shaaaait.
That has to be one of the Greatest and most exciting opening scenes in all of movie history (I remember watching it on HBO back in late 85 and feeling FUCKING PUMPED AND PSYCHED OUT OF MY MIND, all in exhilarated anticipation for the cinematic story that was set to unfold, this story that, although it didn't quite measure up to this mesmerizing, euphoric inducing and amazing opening, didn't disappoint, as it did entertain, and thrill)! It was also this movie that was the final warm up for Mel Gibson, right before his already notable and promising career was catapulted high into the iridescent stratosphere of legendary and iconic greatness, all with his excellent and superb depiction of that unstable, on the edge YET utterly bad ass L.A.P.D. detective Martin Riggs, in that pioneering, hilarious and buddy/cop gem, ""Lethal Weapon (one of my all time favorite movies, as I found it spectacular and original, and whose comedic elements and dry wit drove the movie almost as much as the action, suspense and great acting did)."" Mel pulled that role off to perfection, as that role and movie launched him even higher (and pulled him deeper and more firmly into the Hollywood firmament, something that he capitalized upon brilliantly)! Any ways, what an opening scene, awesome and unforgettable in its exhilarating effect!
I have been looking for this version of this song for over 26 years. I was very disapointed when it wasn't on the soundtrack in this version. I always thought that someone, somewhere, someday would release this "up-tempo version of "One of the Living" because it really rocks! Alas, this I guess will always be my wish
The mix on this credit sequence is way more EPIC than any other which tend to be "Poppy" I was also disappointed at the other mixes which sound weak compared to this.
@@Paul_1971 This was recorded specifically for the intro and was edited from the demo. A full version was made for soundtrack release but was done differently to avoid licensing issues since the soundtrack version is a different license than the movie one. This enabled her to release it on an album later.
The speed is wrong...On the CD this is played at about 1.15 X the speed, which sounds more like the actual original version....Some people don't notice, but once you've heard the difference it's unmistakable.....
I was born in 85. 😀👍 Tina turner,s voice is so powerful love herr♥️♥️♥️ best openning of mad max movie...one of the living great i grew up with mad max movies i miss the interceptor 😥
Old Mad Max is so awesome. I did see this one in the theater, and back then this was an event. These movies stuck with you...always made you think of what is around the corner.
Saw this when I was 7 in 1985. Damn the movies from this era.. there’s no matching them. I was born in 78 a kid in the 1980’s a teenager in the 1990’s. I was extremely fortunate
im an 80s child :-) One of my all time favorite movies of the decade ! Tina Turner added the perfect pizzaz as Aunty Entity, and her opening and closing soundtrack songs are AWESOME !
Wish I was an 80s child. Instead, I'm 21 now and grew up sheltered. I finally saw it the other day, and Blade Runner a little before that. Love those two franchises. That decade offered so much to the television industry
"One of the Living" is far more fitting in the Mad Max universe than "We Don't Need Another Hero", easily. BTW, this movie was my introduction to Tina Turner, and I admired her so much that I ended up naming one of my cats after her. That's why "Beyond Thunderdome" will always be a kind of special movie to me.
This song definitely gets me amped up. It was my warm up song to get ready for last Fall’s IBJJF Jiu Jitsu. Competition. I’m 48 and this song is still magic.
Thanks for putting this up. I was gonna myself had I not found it. I may still clean up the 'song' by fading out the end of the track I have. It's a totally bad-ass tune. That it's so short is shameful. Actually, that this version has never been released is the shameful fact. I guess I'm glad to have heard any of it at all ever. The album version doesn't hold a candle. I have to listen to this repeatedly in order to quench the thirst I feel when it's overtaken by the blowing desert winds.
One of the biggest love hates for me, Tina was really damn good in this movie and the first half especially was solid, once it turned into hook in the 2nd half it loses all that made Road Warrior one of the best movies ever made, really glad we got fury road after this so thunderdome wasn't the last one
@@Paul_1971 Yeah, I saw the preview of that, and said NO THANKS! Road Warrior and ...Beyond Thunderdome are IT! I've always loved the "Thunderdome" concept! It should be used today! (Cue Doctor Dealgood's introduction...😉)
I saw The Road Warrior in the theatre, early 80s, I was a pre-teen. None of here in the U.S. knew it was a sequel. WE SURE AS HELL KNEW Beyond Thunderdome was a sequel! This song didn't get much airplay, but the opening was unforgettable. 70mm 6-track Dolby. When it started, you felt it. When MAD MAX pops on the screen, you felt it in your chest! 2 seconds later, BEYOND THUNDERDOME pounds that Bass again. This song was far better than We Don't Need Another Hero. Mad Max was a bad dude, only saying about 120 words in the whole film. Aunty Entity was the Ultimate Boss. At the end, when her men were gonna kill Max, she stops them, looks at him, and says 'Ain't we a pair, Raggedy Man.' She leaves him to the wasteland, probably figuring he'll make it on his own. Great Movie! RIP Tina Turner. You always took the high road, something many artists nowadays don't know how to do.
Really sets the mood for the film used to own the VHS then then the Laserdisc then the DVD but there is no blu ray only for the 1st two movies i have just ordered the limited edition soundtrack by maurice jarre i already have a 12" version of this song and the album one of the best openings from an 80s movie
I agree there. One of my personal favorite opening title sequences are definitely from the James Bond films. I couldn't pick just one of those, they're all great.
If you have the right song and the right singer, white letters on black background can be very powerful. Love this song, this opening sequence, this movie.
