The third installment of the Mad Max series, Beyond Thunderdome brings with it yet again sweeping changes to the setting. Not just that evidently the previous post apocalyptic place was perhaps not post apocalyptic enough, but in the new super post apocalyptic setting things are looking up. Society is rebuilding, there is law in the land, an oasis of green with fresh water exists.. and it's all done with a PG-13 rating. Oh boy...

In terms of continuity and chronology, George Miller said the easiest way to put it is to think of each film as a "legend of the Road Warrior" meaning that each film is a story about Mad Max that happened, but perhaps told by different people and so some things are altered from each story. Almost sounds like a campfire story - same story, different versions.

I've always thought the flashing light and siren were deliberately put in to Max's security system to deceive anybody else trying to disarm it. They'd get the 'warning alarm', assume they'd gone wrong somewhere, and reverse what they were doing, never realising that they were on the right track all along.

It should also be noted that during the location scouting for the movie, Byron Kennedy ( the producer of the first two movies and the co-creator of Mad Max with George Miller) died in a helicopter crash. Due to this, Miller split the workload with his friend George Ogilvie. He wasn't as into it as the other movies.

I saw no reason for Max and the Gyro captain not to know each other. In fact, its pretty clear Max remembers him. He didnt get a close look at who stole his wagon but knows it was a pilot. They haven't seen each other in 15 years, never leaened each other's names in the previous movie, and the gyro captain is trying to plat dumb to save his life. Clearly the same character.

To Decker Shado If you're looking into the nature of post apocalyptic fiction a potentially valuable read would be the Australian novel "On the Beach" which depicts the slow collapse of life because even though the island continent is far rural enough to avoid any actual nuclear missiles hitting it, worldwide fallout eventually reaches there making a situation of scarce resources even worse. Best of luck and thankyou for an outstanding and entertaining channel JT Hughes

On how Sidney still looked to be in fairly decent shape, read Nevil Shute's On the Beach. It is set in Australia, post nuclear war, and covers the final year of life there, and the radiation follows the wind around the Earth, ever creeping south. some interesting science in it, that could shed some light on what may have happened in the Mad Max timeline. And yes Decker, if you read this, they also did a movie based on that book. Might make for a good choice for an end of the world marathon.

The thing about the Mad Max films is that each subsequent chapter delves deeper into the decay that the world ultimately became. The first movie essentially took place right before the big collapse, the second well into the collapse and nuclear war, and the third, bare bones as I like to call it, a return to primitive times: lack of gas, vehicles, electricity, even though they use methane, but that's an alternative of course when dire need requires it, which is portrayed rather credibly. If you paid close attention, there's a scene where Max runs a geiger counter over a bottle of water someone wants to sell him to test its freshness and it beeps loudly indicating radioactive, which in turn indicates nuclear war, hence fallout and contamination. Fury Road, according to sources, states that it takes place sometime between the first and second movie, though, I find it highly unlikely given that the V8 gets destroyed in that one too as it does in the Road Warrior. So I'm left baffled, even though that world appears to be even more primitive than Beyond Thunderdome. What do you guys think?

From what I have seen Fury road is after Thunderdome, but with all the delays it went from having a 50-year-old Max to a 35ish-year-old Max. This change really fucked the timeline as the story was made for a 50-year-old Max as his final chapter.

15:06 For the LONGEST time I was convinced the second half of this movie was a separate film. I'd describe it to friends and they'd say, "that's Thunderdome" and I'd get all worked up and flustered because Thunderdome had a Thunderdome in it, not the fourth film (at the time there was only 3 for clarity sake and to age myself) which most the time I'd storm off and it would just be something I wouldn't bring up much. I did the same with with Coneheads thinking the time they spent on the alien home planet was a second movie.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is blaster the same guy that was in mad max 1? It was a short appearance in the movie but if so then thats probably why max didn't kill him as he remembered him from his past. As for max saying this wasn't part of the deal I have no clue why he would say that as he did agree to kill blaster to get his stuff back......I can see this making sense if the dome allowed both to leave if one yields but as the they said "two men enter, one man leaves" implying its to the death

Actually, no. Fallout wasn't produced until the 1990's. The movie "The Road Warrior" inspired a table top game called "Wasteland" that was eventually ported to the PC in the late 1980's. Brian Fargo wanted to turn that into a BETTER game called "Wasteland 2," but was denied the rights. He decided to pursue the angle anyway and called it "Fallout," in reference to nuclear fallout. So, no. Fallout is NOT a "Mad Max" video game. And the references in this movie were made about 7-8 years before the game ever came out.
@NotceDragon
@NotceDragon 6 лет назад
Also fallout and mad Max was inspired by the book/movie called the boy and his dog. A post apocalypse story about a boy and a physic dog that travel the waste looking for food, ammo and women. They also encounter creatures similar to ghouls but are known as screamers and a group of survivors in a vault based group. Also Russell is correct road warrior inspired the fallout/wasteland series thus why dog meat, the leather jacket, and other items in the game look like the movie items. Even in fallout 2 you are given an opportunity to fix up a car to drive around in. Heck fallout also follows the similar story of mad Max involving the war but unlike mad max. The fallout war was due to lack of oil which caused China to invade Alaska and later nuclear war. Baby head you should do your research before insulting others.
@thenextshenanigantownandth4393
Wasteland the game was basically A boy and his dog video game tie in to the movie it just wasn't official, blood the physic dog is also called dog meat ,the creator of mad max said that the mad max series is an unofficial remake of A boy and his dog for the 80s . in fallout 1 theres two present characters one is called Vic and the other is max a clear references to both movies ,junk town is also named after the junk town in the movie . theres clear references in the fallout games to both A boy and his dog just as many as mad max if not more so that doesnt necessarily prove fallout was directly inspired by mad max ,it was directly inspired by wasteland which was inspired by A boy and his dog . both mad max and fallout are based on A boy and his dog with fallout taking some influence from mad max also .
@OpenMawProductions
@OpenMawProductions 6 лет назад
"Actually, no." What? What are you referring to? Yes, Fallout *was* heavily influenced by the Mad Max series.
@thenextshenanigantownandth4393
Fallout is based on wasteland . which is based on A boy and his dog . mad max is also based on Boy & his dog ,to the point were its almost plagiarism. mad max was not the main influence to fallout despite the popular misconception .

There was a D&D version/RPG set in the post-apocalyptic future named "Gamma World" in 1978 by TSR, I think that is where Fallout came from. It had everything similar (Mutants , mutated creatures , power armor, robots, lasers guns, etc.)

Thunderdome is just not what I'm looking for in this genre. Also, surprised you didn't mention how Master's speech pattern drastically changes midway through the movie. He's talking like "Who you? 12:16 It's possible that Blaster reminds Max of Benno from the first movie (a farmhand who might have been May Swaisey's son). The same actor also played the bigger of the two guys in The Road Warrior who are strapped to the front of one of the marauders' vehicles. He gets crushed during the tanker chase along with the guy next to him. 12:46 Auntie's in the right here. Sure, some of her policies are whack, but that's beside the point. Master is the one who's threatening the stability of the settlement, and he's doing so for the sake of his own ego. 12:56 Master's hypocrisy on full display. At this point, I'd only laugh if Auntie ordered Iron Bar to publicly execute Master Saigon style (which is basically what he does to Blaster and was justified in doing so for reasons aforementioned). 13:40 Notice how the scar that was on his right eyebrow in the previous movie is now on his left eyebrow. Also notice how the wounds he sustained in the previous movie didn't leave scars on the left side of his head and face like they should have. How is it possible to fuck up details like that? Just like how Brad Dourif of all people, a method actor notorious for his meticulous dedication to his craft, says "FEE-OR-EE sixteen" instead of "Fury 161" in Alien Resurrection. That's also the fruity French director's fault for not catching that as a mistake and not calling for another take. 13:54 They use the word "gulag" in place of "exile" for reasons that are never explained. 14:11 Notice how they even have "hard labour" as a punishment (complete with pointless but authentic UK spelling which is pointless because it makes no sense to add unpronounced letters to words and anyone who says otherwise should be shot because they're hastening the collapse of civilization by promoting the breakdown of communication). Also notice how much space it takes up, probably because they want people to receive that punishment so they can justify exploitation. That aspect of this so-called "civilization" is totally *NOT* justified. 14:35 It always bothers me when people do that in movies. No one would do that if they were actually in that situation. They'd be as meticulous with logistics as they possible could. 18:15 But why? Master got what he deserved. Better than he deserved, actually. He had a good job and a respectable position (by the standards of the time and place), but somehow that just wasn't enough for him. Why are we expected to sympathize with his plight when he was putting the settlement at risk with his own arrogance? Also, they never explain how or why he's suddenly wearing "civilized" clothing when they're on the train. Nor is it explained why it's "tailored for a tink," so to speak. Yeah, I'm borrowing that word "tink" from Borderlands 3. 19:21 I wouldn't shed a tear if that little bastard got shot. A bandit is a bandit no matter their age and they all deserve to be executed, ground up, and used as fertilizer. 20:54 Why is Blackfinger holding that whippet gun like that? If he fired a shot like that, he'd mess up his hand, yet no reprimand from Auntie nor from any sort of commanding officer. Anyway, why do movie people always hold guns wrong? Why do they leave stocks folded? Why do prop guys pick dummy guns that don't match the gun they're intended to stand in for? 21:36 Notice the Masonic imagery, especially the triangle and the ladder. I wouldn't be surprised if the floor had a black and white chessboard tile motif (known as "Masonic pavement").

@@ethanblair981 Oh, really? Did you know that it was the oppressor class that screwed up the French language? That's why all their words and names are chock full of unnecessary letters. It's always "the pointy-headed elites" (to borrow a term from the late but still great Rush Limbaugh).

@@judsongaiden9878 Yes... the learned elite of English history did have a large sway over linguistic trends... what are you trying to say with that fact? In any event, you will find the lack of a 'u' in labour is the habit, not the reverse. It's called English for a reason.

Sure, the pigs were a thematic choice, but they do have a lot of advantages for how they were used in the movie. Unlike most domestic animals they do pretty well in crowded spaces and they can eat damn near anything. Didn't see a lot of grain fields or grass around to feed most other herd critters...
